Waterman was a much higher profile selection and did more in the U18's than Champion and still absolutely nobody bid on him. Remember us rooting along for it in a thread like it was yestee :oldwoman:

I think in a deep draft, we'll be right and Champo will go under the radar.

Unlike stupid dickhead dumb Collard who went and started playing like Judd in the WAFL a few weeks directly before the draft.

Clubs tend not to bid unless they are dickheads, once players are passed over in the opening rounds. If he's not bid on by the ~middle of the third, he won't be bid on.

Didn't he rack up seven goals in three WAFL games which, for a slight kid playing against men, is fairly impressive. Why are these performances going under the radar?

Playing guys on the wing and drafting and playing wingers is slightly different
Regardless of whether you have any wingers someone still lines up on a wing.

So something happened then? As opposed to absolutely nothing.

So we did draft some players. And we have played someone on the wing to develop as a winger.

Johnson looks like a likely type for the wing.

Maric as a point of difference Mason Wood type winger is worth pursuing IMO. Maric's foot skills in general play and kicking g inside 50 is elite.

Hall potentially plays wing or inside.

Burgiel and his injury issues is disappointing sure.

And since Gaff we haven't had nor used a top 5 pick on a winger.

And Chesser. Can't forget Chess. Thrown onto the defensive wing to become the next Masten whipping boy. Hopefully a new coach and game plan can get more development out of Chesser and free the kid up to play football instead of running g back and forth on the dead wing.

I spoke with his coach at Scotch at the VIC Country game. His views on Banfield is that he has good pace, great skills and sees the play very well. His approach to the carnival was to get used to the pace of the game and play the role asked. BB apparently is a good sort and real team oriented guy

So where next - Steve was pretty open about Charlie being able to play a raft of positions. As a bottom ager, you get given a role they need not necessarily your best. Current thinking is start on a wing but could be great as the hbf distributor that runs through the mid once he gets bulked up. He also loves going forward and kicking goals. I guess Claremont will experiment in 2025 but nice he is not pigeonholed.

Davis v Banfield are probably very similar which is why I’m less bullish on Hamish. That said his end to 2024 at Claremont league was brilliant and shows he will make it
Do you think the Eagles will try and get him into the WAFL program like the Crows did with Welsh this year? Same with Walley and Evans

Plays WAFL for us and then when u18 national Championships start he would go back on play U18 for Claremont and WA before returning to our WAFL seniors.

Didn’t work short term for Welsh but you’d think it should have some long term benefit.

Or WAs PSA footy being a bit bigger then SAs might prevent that

Olli Hotton delisted by St Kilda

From memory he had some fans on here in his draft year

Any interest?

I haven’t followed him since he was drafted so no idea why it hasn’t worked out for him

Wouldn’t be too mad at Hayes

So the rules with PSA is that it is school first then WAFL club.

I don’t know the WAFL rules that King Nessie I agreed to but I doubt it includes getting father and sons across. He’ll we couldn’t even do it for Champion and other NGA prospects

Take Oli, draft Taj?

Incidentally, the highly touted small forward brigade of the 2022 draft has been a big flop. Hotton and Burgiel delisted, Konstanty off-loaded by Sydney for cheap and Charlie Clarke yet to make a dent at AFL level.

Charlie Clarke delisted too. Brayden George was moved to defence and got injured again as well. Darcy Jones looks the winner.

NGA was a bit different recently because you couldn’t get them inside 40. FS you could, will be interesting to see if we try and go down this route.

I'm no WAFL watcher, but I would also wonder why we'd want to put any of our potential draftees into that abortion of a team. Will do nothing but kill their development.

I liked the look of Charlie Clarke in his draft year. Recall we may have been interested.

Not high on our needs list ATM though.

Remember reading he got quite a bad injury in his first year, can't recall what it was.

EDIT: Quick google and found it, should've done that first! This was from January 23.

However, there was bad news for Hotton, who was taken with pick No.35 in the NAB AFL Draft, after he developed a stress fracture in his back.

"This injury is a really disappointing blow for Olli who, like any draftee, was keen to get stuck into his program," Saints performance, medical and operations manager David Misson said.

"The recovery for this type of injury requires a period of rest before incremental load increases, which while frustrating, should mean that this issue does not reoccur.

"In the meantime, unfortunately it is likely that Olli will miss the majority of the first half of the season while he recovers."

Wow, bit shocked with Charlie Clarke. He was a good player in his draft year but haven't followed really since.

Saw him play in VFL prelim 5 weeks ago and he did some really nice things in that game.

Not many has mentioned Kayle Gerreyn here, I reckon he will be as good as Luke Jackson in the long run.

I like your doubling down but maric was drafted as a forward. Hall as an inside mid, burgiel when fit plays of a hbf.
Harvey sure,we'll see.
My point was no matter if you've got even 1 'wingman' on your list you still play someone on the wing. If you want to call trying Jamieson on a wing being creative geniuses you can or it could be that we really just had no one suitable to play in that role so plonked someone there.
Chesser sure. He's probably played it a bit in his career so far. Sucked most of the time but yeah we're trying aren't we.
Probably the last draftee I had high hopes for as a wingman was Foley. That didn't go well.

Gerreyn - I like him but he is undersized for AFL and we have plenty coming through

In terms of developing and young talls, we have J Williams, Archer, Livingstone, Barnett (KPP not ruck), and Bazzo.

We need mids

Absolotely nothing has been done?

Have we not been playing any wingers?

Chesser sacraficed on Simo's defensive wing learning " running patterns".

Seem to recall seeing Maric being trialled as a tall winger to provide a target coming out of defense.

Hall played there in his handful of games.

Burgiel was one option drafted but his hammies let him down.q
None of those guys accumulate, though, and as you mentioned, they get put on the notorious Simmo wing ‘defensive’ wing position, not there to accumulate and move the ball around.

This club either needs to learn how to develop proper outside/balanced midfielders again, or it has to spend good draft capital on quality talent (which we don’t have this year).

How many quality wingers get drafted top 10.?

Not many.

Moreas likely available at our 2nd.

Wings and half backs slide with gun mids and talls taking the majority of the best picks.

No idea. It's a fair point though.

All i can say is he doesn't seem to land in the top 40 in many phantoms, if any.

His size is probably going to be a knock on him along with his endurance, but also the strength of this draft might help WCE.

His draft range is currently between 40-60.
