So, you're saying you can develop fringe players easily in a team with a top end that isn't very good?
I’m saying that list/team depth and team balance is more important than a teams top 6 players.

Carlton, GWS and Bulldogs have had the best top end the last three years and haven’t made a single grand final in that time between them.

Hard to compare to a dual Brownlow medallist but more outside than Cripps. Have never thought of him as the comparison whilst watching him. It’s pronounced “Ow” as in ow I hurt myself.

could be
Jack Uff as in rough
Jack O as in dough
Jack Off as in cough
or Jack Ow as in another bloke who doesn't know how to pronounce his own name. :p

I would recommend you sign up to the Rookie Me Central draft guide.

As an example - here is the write up on Lindsay. Summary - above average or average in everything except Disposal where he is elite. It means he is more outside, but with Harley, Ginbey, Graham, etc, that is not a bad thing to add.

Over the years, my view is that these guys do it well.

Also a left footer like Bock and Gunston.

Absolutely not. You're top end is the most important factor. It competes with the best opposition, and also allows you soldiers to play at optimum.

Richmond - Dusty, Cotch, Reiwoldt
Melbourne - Tracc, Fanta, Gawn, Viney, May
Collingwood - Daicaii, De Goey, Sidebottom, Moore
Brisbane - Neale, McLuggage, Zorko, Andrews

The best teams are built around the top guys. You're trying to say, "But why haven't Blues won a flag?" as if they were the only team to have a great top end, and were beaten by teams that didn't. They got bettered by other teams that had similar top ends.

Show me a team that doesn't have aa great top end that has won a flag? The closest you'll get is Geelong and us. You generally can't have a team that doesn't have a great top end that wins a flag.

We didn’t have a great top end in 2018? Wow!

First of all, the 2018 Eagles had a better top end than any of those teams listed. The amount of all Australians in that side was ridiculous.

Secondly, 2023 Collingwood had one truly elite player. You’ve literally included Sidebottom who wouldn’t have been in the top 150 players last year, De Goey who can be great but is inconsistent, and Moore who would struggle to be in the top 5 KPD’s in the league.

Compare that to:

GWS - Tom Green, Toby Greene, Jesse Hogan, Sam Taylor, Josh Kelly, Lachie Whitfield
Carlton - Patrick Cripps, Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay, Sam Walsh, Jacob Weitering

And tell me with a straight face that Collingwood had an equivalent top end last year.

If top end was truly so important, the eagles with two AA KPP’s and a mid round playing at a near AA level would have fared a bit better last year you don’t think?

There are multiple ways you can build out a team to win a premiership. Top end talent will absolutely carry average players to a win but only to a certain extent. The greater the talent the greater they can carry, 2006 WCE being a great example of how a very elite few can carry a team.

I'd argue that our 2018 team (as far as premiership winning teams) had a much more even spread of talent and the weaker parts of the team were in the midfield which is definitely a rarity.

You're not understanding. I didn't say "teams with top ends always win flags". I said, "You have to have an elite top end to win a flag". Huge difference. And yes, there are exceptions (with almost everything).

Just curious, how was our midfield last year? In how many games did we win the midfield battle? On what planet do you think we can improve our bottom 6 and it will make a sizeable difference?

I’d argue that 2018 side would be the most talented side of the last 10 years bar maybe the Hawks side and the fact only one premiership was gained from that team is evidence that top end talent doesn’t directly translate to premierships.

generational KPD, generational KPF, generational Ruck, one of the best medium defenders of the era, one of if not the best Wingmen of the era.

It then had another AA medium defender, another AA KPF, an AA mid who peaked as a top 5 mid, another mid who would have peaked as a top 10 mid, 2 X AA med Fwds and an AA squad KPD.

And the only one of those not in their prime was Lecras and probably Barrass.

Ridiculous top end.

I believe Collingwood last year is evidence to the contrary, as is Geelong the year before. Neither side would have had a top 4 top end in their premiership years.

I’m also not suggesting you don’t need an elite top end to win, I’m just saying that the depth of a list is far more important and it is not simply “stars vs stars” as you originally suggested.

You think replacing WAFL level players with AFL calibre talent won’t make a sizeable difference?

IDK -> Stewart, Cameron, Hawkins, Smith, Dangerfield & Selwood were the best in the comp in their respective positions for the last decade.
Collingwood had less -> Sidebottom, Pendles, N. Daicos, Crisp, T. Mitchell but these aren't guys who have had just one or two years on top.

Modern footy makes it harder to stand out like the days of old but there are a handful of AFL hall of famers for both clubs here.

Ridiculous top end.

Also probably the most creative half back in JETTA! His impact was very underrated

I'm really coming around to believing Jobe Shanahan might be a bolter as the highest drafted KPF.

A great athlete and natural footballer, I'm surprised he's not rated higher than Allan.

Can also plays across all lines, reports he played as an intercept defender in U16s, he kicked 60 goals for his local men's team as an under ager.
