he hasn't. media headline/commentary =/= fact. i repeat, media commentary does not equal fact.

Sure, but Goodes could make a statement to oppose it.

The media / SFC / AFL have pushed a division of 'you're either racist if you boo, or not if you don't'. I believe Goodes agrees too, as the SFC is obviously projecting his point of view first and foremost.

Answer? Shame the masses into not booing. It's pathetic, so, so pathetic. Primary Schoolyard pathetic.

What figure should it be? In perfect ratio to the population? Lower? Higher?

92% of prisoners are male.

Does that figure alone demonstrate that the police, courts and the government are systematically targeting males, and anyone who dares disagree is sexist and ignorant? [hush, MRAs, that is a facetious question]

Or, perhaps, is there a pretty solid, if tragic, basis for such an overrepresentation of indigenous people in the NT prison population?

Hint: I can tell you first hand, there is.

I'm aware of this. For example, the vast majority of murders are committed by men. Therefore men are violent and evil. If people see the flaw in this line of reasoning, why don't people see the flaw in racists trumpeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander crime stats? Because that is precisely what I've seen on social media, "Stop being criminals then!" without taking a look at the socioeconomic inequalities that produce crime. Never mind that, let's just stereotype an entire race of people as bad.

Big brother wants all of us to bow down and say yes to our Sydney masters!!

I thought it was common knowledge the elite transfer entitlements and freedoms from the indigenous in other parts of Australia to Sydney through a unfair tax system and government/regulated market measures which favour residents from overseas and in Sydney to propel the Sydney property market isn't it?

Naturally Goodes must be seen as a hero to them so they can put down indigenous elsewhere via their locational ponzi scheme supported by national broadcasts of mainstream propaganda produced in the Sydney basin and nearby.

If you want politics, you got it!!! We can play that game to!!! We are not the mutants the elite would like us to be to repress the indigenous and others!
mate, whatever you are on, get off it, and take the tin foil hat off while your at it.

i've made the "you're either with us, or you're with the terrorists" analogy several times. i find it nauseating.

but i shouldn't expect any better. if your life's occupation is to write words about 'footy' then you aren't required to be possessing of any useful thinking skills. the beyond reetarded campaign to flush out the booers with silence is a special kind of stupid that, for mine, is standing out in this whole stupid drama.

The odd ignorant racist will exist forever, plain and simple. What's progressive is taking the high ground and ignoring it, not branding everyone with the same prejudice view with an intent to shame people from expressing non racial judgments.

What a "convenient" statement of "logic". You would expect such vitriolic statements from a freaking homicidal maniac! Racists = Serial Killers. Solution? EGG THEM. Egg them back to the stone age.

Swans army. Mobilise against the Patrick Batemen's of the world. Head to the cattery, take those eggs carry on. Don't be armchair activists! Let people on the plane know you are standing up to racial prejudice! When they call you a petulant child proclaim "We do not stand for this racial abuse!" Egg the shit out of the stadium. Racists could be anywhere. Even if they aren't booing.... holy sheet...

Thats western media / society. You have the 'followers' (religious, Politically left or politically right) - then you have people who think for themselves, who are the 'dangerous' ones. ;-)

Heaven forbid, if everyone had the foresight to have their own informed opinions / views, the world would probably function with some logic.

Only a matter of time before some loon claims Goodes detractors would say such a stup- oh. Too late.:p

Notice the black guy with no voice? Sounds like a classic case of Dallas Scott. #TVandRADIOcensorship
That ain't any black guy, that's Michael Winslow.

Watch this, the bloke is amazing.

When will the Swans admit they, with their stakeholders, are sensitive IMO about the indigenous topic because they care more about people from overseas buying of property and their housing prices than indigenous rights mainly in other areas of Australia foreign to their self interests and wealth redistribution transfer gains?
You left out how the left-wing media bribed the entire Adelaide Football Club to let Lewis Jetta kick the first goal yesterday.

Nobody did that here, at least not in the chain of comments you were responding to, so perhaps you should save that argument for those people.

Glad I made you smile.

It's quite amazing that we've had an entire week of PR media dynamite....And yet his holiness has not yet uttered a single word....One can only imagine the hushed tones & silence of the media journos, straining on tenterhooks, hanging off his every word at his next press-conference.;)

You can hardly imagine the voluminous pontifications of every journo thereafter, rushing to their PC's, in order to interpret & extrapolate for us - the blind, huddled, footy masses - the true message of the anointed one.

Cue Media Nirvana....With another 1,000 page roll of Adam Goodes Thread, sending Big Footy share-holders into one ginormous orgasm....Surely, this must be a certified legendary thread.:D

Yeah. Same type of make bullshit excuses thinking that goes into justifying negative stereotypes about minorities goes into justifying the booing, though. I've seen all the excuses under the sun for the motivation behind Goodes booing, from sniping, staging, a "controversial" goal celebreation and his public profile. All nonsense, of course, because there are other players like this who don't get booed every time they touch the ball. He just gets booed because he isn't a good little aboriginal that stays in his box.

Pretty sure he gave an interview yesterday.

What about laughing? Are we allowed to laugh at Adam Goodes?

What a joke! The AFL and the media fill me with disgust. You cannot boo player X because he is black!

Who else in the history of the world has been exempt from booing?

Adam Goodes, do us all a favour and quit before you completely destroy our once great game.

And?

Adam Goodes has become a political football in a discussion of race relations. It is not a role he sought, any more than he invited the mindless booing that prompted his withdrawal from this weekend's game.

It is not a job other Indigenous sportsmen or sportswomen are desperate to take on. Why would you? Goodes has poked his head up on Indigenous matters – with some mostly mild comments and objections – and copped a whack to his soul that is far more painful than any of the bruises he had in the previous 300-plus games. As of today, it is unclear whether he will return to the field next weekend.

In AFL player circles, it has been pointed out that the treatment of Goodes could well deter other Indigenous footballers from saying anything slightly interesting about Aboriginal issues. If that transpires, it would represent an appalling pall of censorship caused by ignorance.

Some who want to see the repeal of section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act – supposedly in the interests of free speech – don't seem so concerned with muffling Indigenous footballers.

They'll defend the booers, not the speech of those booed. Alas, there is no law that discourages Shane Warne from tweeting.

Buddy Franklin, Goodes' teammate and fellow Aborigine, has been largely mute on this subject, and left it to his girlfriend, Jesinta Campbell, to voice support for Goodes. One can imagine Buddy doesn't want to buy into it, and we can see why. Hawthorn fans booed Goodes when these teams met at the MCG, and largely spared the carefree Franklin, who had left the club for money.

Tony Abbott's comments supporting Goodes resemble those of Gillon McLachlan, in that they came a touch late, and were restrained, rather than forthright or fierce. Still, some support from Abbott is better than none. If the Prime Minister didn't know it, his office should be aware how this story is playing overseas and will continue to play if the booing doesn't cease, or if Goodes pulls up stumps prematurely.

During the week, this column has been contacted by media in New Zealand and the Middle East, requesting words on the Goodes scenario. The BBC, Huffington Post and other international media have sniffed the story, too.

It doesn't require great imagination to guess how Australia and its footy followers will be portrayed from afar – as intolerant boofheads who have hounded a great Aboriginal footballer into seclusion. In some quarters, the mistreatment of Goodes will probably be seen through the prism of Hansonism, which would be unfair – we're far more diverse and tolerant than most societies.

But if Australia can be wilfully misunderstood, the same is true of Adam Goodes, who did not want to be the source of so much focus or division. He did not plan to be called an ape. He didn't plan to be booed. He didn't ask to be Australian of the Year. He didn't set out to be bagged by Warnie, Sam Newman, Alan Jones et al and he certainly has not enjoyed the attention.

Some close to him say he has no intention of a political career. Goodes is largely an accidental race warrior. He played for 16 years with little controversy until that fateful Friday evening against Collingwood, when he was near the fence and heard himself described as an ape. He did not know that the remark came from a 13-year-old girl. He subsequently called for the girl to be supported. He did not imagine that his war cry would be so inflammatory, that his imaginary spear would be so feared.

Goodes' philanthropic work preceded him being named Australian of the Year, with his Go Foundation supporting Indigenous education.

Goodes also is passionate about combating domestic violence, his mother having been a victim of abuse when he grew up. She was a stolen generation victim, and from what one can gather, he knew relatively little about his heritage until he became a Sydney player.

His Australia Day speech is another instance of his commentary being misrepresented. He did not speak of invasion day. His words, if anything, were motherhood stuff. "I believe we are all connected whether we like it or not. We are all equal and the same in so many ways. My hope is that we as a nation can break down the silos between races, break down those stereotypes of minority populations, Indigenous populations and all other minority groups. I hope we can be proud of our heritage regardless of the colour of our skin and be proud to be Australian."

I have noted before that, in the theory devised by an African-American conservative intellectual, Goodes has ended up playing the role of challenger on race, as distinct from the "bargainer", who adopts a go along to get along view and is duly rewarded for avoiding any confrontation. But he's only become our – mild by international standards – version of a challenger due to the sheer absence of Indigenous public figures who have his profile. Goodes is probably the most recognised Indigenous person in the country today, partly as a result of this saga.

If Australians have a glass jaw when it comes to receiving critiques or challenges from Indigenous public figures, the Adam Goodes episode might be a game changer. Just as Michael Long's objections and dignified intervention helped discourage flagrant racial abuse on the field, Goodes – again, more by accident than design – can push the country an inch or two towards reconciliation. Long, incidentally, had the advantage of operating in the days before social media and the internet, when "the media" was neither as invasive nor combative.

If this unpleasant circus does improve the dialogue and race relations, Goodes would be something akin to a sacrificial lamb. In football terms, he didn't seek the contact, but when it came, he didn't flinch or duck. And in the long run, history will be on his side.
