Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

It was a poor analogy.:)

It's a good analogy. You took it out of context with your complex mumbo jumbo about the council.

Fact is, Collingwood and Essendon have spent 15 years making the ANZAC Day game the most marketable on the home and away calender. Not anybody else. We made it what it is. I'll be damned if these two clubs let somebody else march in and starting claiming it as their own.

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

Not necessarily. Other clubs are permitted to develop their own traditions and promotions just as Collingwood and Essendon did. They can produce a plan and I'm quite sure that the AFL would give it due consideration just as they did for Anzac day but the suggestion by some is that they should somehow profit from the fruits of other clubs' hard labour (as if they don't already ) to the detriment of the clubs who have done the hard yards. Hardly fair don't you think?

Fairness to all clubs is not part of the AFL's game plan.

I like the day and have no problem with who plays. Went to 95 and 96 and from a hazed memory I had a great time.

No clubs own the day so I don't buy it that Collingwood and Essendon made this day. It's a public holiday in Melbourne and people want something to do. Going to the footy is usually a good day out. The fact is heaps of neutrals go and probably would still go whoever is playing. From a neutral perspective I would much prefer to see St Kilda V Collingwood this year but it's Essendon V Collingwood again so I will watch on TV if I get the chance. If I was in Melbourne I would probably go and wouldn't care if there was 30,000 or 90,000 people in attendance.

It has become a bit of a wankfest though, equating footballers to soldiers of war.

PS. Still a poor analogy.;)

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

As I said in my first post, I have no issue at all with Collingwood and Essendon promoting the game, playing the game etc etc.

I do get a little annoyed though, when some supporters then feel like they somehow now "own" ANZAC day.

Port and St Kilda tried to lock in the Friday night game on the weekend. Didn't last long.
Fortunately I don't know anyone who thinks they own Anzac day so I don't really get it but obviously you must keep different company than I do. The fact is that at this point Collingwood and Essendon through an agreement with the AFL have ownership of the Anzac day game. That's very different to owning Anzac day.

Sydney & Melb tried to get a tradition going on Anzac day & played a few night matches - it failed. If it became a huge event after a lot of work by both clubs & was the Swans biggest payday of the year would you think it ok to take it away?

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

So while we're having a go at the Pies and Bombers for holding onto ANZAC Day why don't we have a crack at Geelong and Hawthorn for holding onto East Monday? Or Carlton and Richmond for getting the season opener? Or Essendon and Richmond for holding onto Dreamtime at the 'G?

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

Collingwood v Essendon? Pfft. :)

I, for one, will be looking forward to the annual Anzac Cup tilt at Villers-Bretonneux on the battlefields of northern France, between the Australian Spirit and France.

;)

The game was originally Richmond versus Collingwood back in 1977.

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

The game was originally Richmond versus Collingwood back in 1977.

No it wasn't.

It wasn't "originally" Richmond vs Collingwood anymore than it was originally Carlton vs Essendon in 1975 (record crowd at the time of 77,770 at Waverley)

Or "originally" Nth Melb vs Carlton in 1974 (54,173 at Waverley)

Or "originally" St.Kilda vs Collingwoof in 1973 (49,699 at Waverley)

Or "originally Essendon vs Carlton in 1972 (50,367 at Waverley)

Originally Richmond vs Collingwood my ass. The first year matches started to be played on Anzac Day was 1960, (which was a Monday) and there were two games: Fitzroy vs Carlton and St.KIlda vs Melbourne.

So, given that Fitzroy no longer play in the AFL, the original Anzac Day clash was St.Kilda vs Melbourne in 1960

St.Kilda and Melbourne also met in the first "big MCG crowd" Anzac day game in 1966 (64,930 on a Monday)

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

So, in summary, here are the Anzac day originals:

First Anzac day matches
* St.Kilda vs Melbourne at Junction Oval 1960 (32,000)
* Fitzroy vs Carlton at Brunswick St 1960 (33,815)

First Anzac day match to get over 50,000
* Melbourne vs Hawthorn in 1963 (55,293 on a Thursday at MCG)

First Anzac day match to get over 60,000
* Melbourne vs St.Kilda in 1966 (64,930 on a Monday at MCG)

First Anzac day match to get over 70,000
* Carlton vs Essendon in 1975 (77,770 on a Friday at Waverley)

So, really the first and original mega-blockbuster on Anzac Day was actually Carlton vs Essendon, which obviously would have got close to 90,000 at the MCG.

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

Carlton v Essendon was at VFL Park. Matches at VFL Park and the MCG on Anzac Day became a small tradition after that (e.g. 1984 - Carlton v Collingwood @ Waverley and Richmond v Essendon @ MCG).

The recent Hawthorn v Geelong Easter Monday matches FWIW were Carlton v Essendon games, which got moved back to the Saturday night.

Yes I know it was. I mentioned it would have got 90,000 if it was at the MCG. Carlton also played Essendon at Waverley on Anzac Day in 1986.

Collingwood and Hawthorn were able to draw 92935 to Waverley. I was there. It was astounding. I still say the greatest crowd ever considering the venue. Obviously it wasn't ANZAC Day but is was astounding.

The aisles were full of people sitting in them and you couldn't move in or out. It took a couple of hours to get out of the car park and the Hawks slaughtered us with Matthews and Goad carving us up. The most astounding crowd ever despite there having been a few bigger.

Yes I'm aware the Waverley record was 92,935 but the Essendon-Carlton 1975 match was a record crowd for Waverley at the time.

Also, Hawthorn vs Collingwood wasn't on Anzac Day. It was Queen's Birthday.

There are some people who suggest that the Carlton-Collingwood match at Waverely in round 15, 1990 exceeded 90,000 but the health regualtors would have had a feld day, so they "said" the crowd was 76,390, but people I've spoken to said it was possibly over 90,000.

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

Such a great thing to see a long term tradition continue.

Every year, people sulk about why they should get a slice of a cake that 2 other clubs spent years baking.

Every year the arguments are repetitive and weak.

I can't wait for next years thread.:D

BF should create a "memory box" for all those bitching about a great event by two teams who have a long rivalry between them and now extends to ANZAC day.
These people who bitch in year in & year out, should be able to retrieve their 'bitch' from previous years & repost.
It would save a lot of retyping.
Get used to it.... 'princesses'......... it's here to stay.:thumbsu:

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

This year reminds me of 2001, but a role reversal 10 years later.

Reigning Premiers Collingwood/Essendon up against a rising team Essendon/Collingwood who is starting to show something after a bleak few last years.

Dons were just too good in 2001, impressive young forward Tarrant (Hurley?) wins the medal with 4 classy goals but go down by 8 points, prompting Sheedy to say "They're coming".

Hopefully we win and Mick returns the compliment.

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

Will be going for a 2nd straight year, and it looks as if the match might last longer than 10 minutes this year, which is good. Also managed to get seating (way back in the top tier, but eh, it aint that bad).

Yep, the arguments against Collingwood and Essendon getting a free $700,000 bonus each year are weak.

1) No one can generate crowds like Collingwood and Essendon

response from those with FACTS - Collingwood vs Hawthorn 1981 - 92,000 non-anzac day match

response from those with FACTS - Carlton vs Essendon 2000 - 91,000
for a non-anzac day match.

Oh, so other teams can draw big crowds?? wow! what a shock to the system.

2) Collingwood and Essendon are entitled to it as they "invented" it.

Now your madcap inventor - Kevin Sheedy - is saying the day should be shared around and other teams should have access to the Anzac Day game. I guess you only believe in your Essendon leader's prophetic words prior to his change in mind though....

Yep, your argument for Collingwood and Essendon retaining the rights to this match is without fault.

I have no concern about how much money clubs make. Obviously many do though, including the clubs. The AFL make a huge amount of money from TV rights which should prop up all clubs. Money is only an issue because the AFL make it so.

I'm sure you read what I posted. First off it wasn't a great analogy by Hird.;) Second, Anzac Day is a public holiday and as such going to the footy is a great way to spend that day in Melbourne for a neutral. Third, I would like to see a GF replay on that day but otherwise don't care who plays. Fourth, no clubs own the day or have the right to demand a certain fixture.

It's not a Collingwood/Essendon thing. It's purely an AFL fixturing issue. They fixture for maximum revenue. They are very happy for a crowd of 80-95 guaranteed every year. This does not make it right though when other Melbourne clubs do not have the chance to play on that public holiday and get an increase of neutrals to their game.

Now find crowds like that when both sides involved have been in the bottom 8. Off you go.

This whiney pathetic attitude by some supporters is getting very tiresome. Anzac day as a football experience was pretty much nothing until Collingwood and Essendon made it what it is today through sheer hard work. They sought and created relationships with the ADF and the RSL. They promoted the game with forethought and with sensitivity to the meaning of Anzac day and they successfully turned it into an iconic event which captures the imagination of the fans. Their efforts have been widely acknowledged to have had a significant positive impact on the psyche and consciousness of the nation in regard to the Anzac tradition and legend. If Sydney or some other clubs want to create such a day they are free to put up a proposal for the AFL but get your ****ing green eyes of what these two clubs have achieved and build your own event.

Nice rant. Not sure why you quoted my post for it though.

You do realise that most people outside of the Melbourne fishbowl take little to no interest in what is happening down there. the psyche and consciousness of the nation now that's funny.

Firstly, yes you're right of course, to say the nation might be a little over the top but not entirely since a significant proportion of the nation live in AFL dominated states when it comes to sport.

The reason I quoted your post was this:
This does not make it right though when other Melbourne clubs do not have the chance to play on that public holiday and get an increase of neutrals to their game.

This is the whiney pathetic attitude I was referring to! Whether it reflects your feelings or not, unfortunately there is a mentality amongst some supporters that they somehow have a right to the revenue stream that Collingwood and Essendon have developed.

Re: The Annual ANZAC DAY Thread - Edition 2011

And other teams would not be able to average 70000+ to the game each year. Tell me if it were a Bulldogs v North game people would turn up? It'd get about 50000!

Get over it!
