Never saw Serge play unfortunately.

Fev, rightly or wrongly and not condoning most of the bad/toxic and alcohol fulled behaviour at his time at the club, was pretty much the only worthwhile reason to show up to Carlton games between 2002 and 2007 (before Judd arrived)

If only he managed to be mentored and disciplined properly when he was first drafted (Parko has admitted that he and others at the club were way too lenient on Fev and his bad boy act when he started)

Naturally he has no one to blame but himself for many of the poor choices he made off-field, but sometimes, even when we were getting flogged, he gave us something to cheer for (on field)

In many respects, the ultimately flawed genius and indiscretions of Brendon Fevola sums up the 21st Century of the Carlton footy club as a whole.

Still see him at games at Marvel Stadium from time to time. It’s hard to feel about a bloke I really enjoyed as a player, but did some really shocking stuff off it that can never be forgiven (esp the reason why he was booted from the club)

My feelings towards the manchild is mixed, has to vote for him under the current criteria though.

Wow, you lucky old bastard. So you basically started following when we improving from a bleak period for club, saw a drought breaking premiership in 1968 and all the golden era from 1968 to 1987.
Started going to the footy in 1964 and yep saw the lot. Also i lived within walking distance of Princes Park.

Serge won the goal kicking early on but he made his name as a ruck rover in one of the finest lines ever assembled to represent Carlton. Nicholls, Silvagni and Gallagher. He was a champ over a long period and won the B and F in a premiership year.

Fev was great. Could have been anything but he chose to be a dickhead.

On so many levels Serge wins this.

Walking distance FFS, that is a dream situation.
I had to walk nearly 15 minutes and wait for a bus that probably only serviced one an hour Saturday mornings. If I missed that, I was screwed. Then if bus was even close to on time and I got one, then was 15 minutes to train station and hope bus gets there before next train leaves. Otherwise another half hour wait to next train. Than an hour ride to Flinders Street, then walk to Elizabeath Street, wait for tram 19 and another 20 minute ride to Princes Park. Then get back home again. If I got back home by 7-30 pm to see last hour of 7s Big League Replay I was lucky...

walking distance to ground.. geez, lucky bugger.

Cannot vote as only seen one of them play myself
From grainy black and white footage. Serg looks like was a very good mark for his size and put body over ball and hard working contested beast ruck rover of that era. But never seen him play myself. Fev a flawed but talented full forward. Bit like Allen Jakovich of 90's. Never won a B&F in very poor era for club which is telling. If you saw Serg play you must be well over 65 years of age as it seems he played from mid or late 50's to around 1970ish. He actually won B&F's though. One of them in a premiership year for club. Telling.
Be interested how many of you old enough to see both to have a legit match up vote. This is not a good match up for such a voting system but it is what it is. Look forward to next match up I can vote on.
My understanding is you don't have to have seen both to vote. You have decided to abstain in these circumstances, and that is your prerogative.

I thought if you had only seen one, you were quite entitled to vote for them. Not sure if we can have this clarified, as I can't vote for Serge in this match up.

You can do what you like. OP said so. I'm just saying, logically to make a vote on a match up of players I seen, I need to have seen both players play to even be in situation to vote. So yes, every time there is a match up that have not seen BOTH player play, I feel there is no point voting as to me it is only legit match up vote if I seen both.
You are entitled to vote on the one you only seen if you want. Just realise it clearly is not a vote on a situation of seeing BOTH players. The people that seen BOTH players for mine are only votes worth taking into account but it was not set up this way, so clearly just vote if you want to, anyway you like. It will be more interesting if those of us that have not seen BOTH play actually choose to abstain but too late now as an actual rule. Honour system is the best way forward.

I think it comes back to whether we are voting for "Carlton's GOAT" or "Carlton's GOAT that we have seen".

In the same way that Deacon, James, Vallence etc. are disadvantaged, then so should Serge potentially be disadvantaged. Some of these match-ups do not have to result in the best player necessarily winning to make it interesting. If we get upsets because of the age demographic, that can still be interesting, as well as achieving "the best we have seen".

It will be interesting and fun no matter what.
Ideally "Carlton's GOAT that we have seen" would have been a better thread title but if you read the thread you soon learn it is more about just players we seen play.
The thing is fun no matter what. If the most interesting thing I learn from thread is age demographic of those that voted, it still will be fun exercise.

Am old, but not that old to have seen Sergio

My vote is for Fev
Saw Serge in his twilight, but that was enough. A great of the club, ultimate team man.
By comparison Fevola had great talent, which he chose to use intermittently without showing the team ethos to defend as well as play deep forward. Fev loses
so much from this harsh marker. Does not deserve to be in the same conversation as Sergio from a contribution perspective.

Fev right up there with the most talented player to pull on the Navy Blue I have seen.
Petulant (remember the time he took his boots off when benched ), spoiled and frustrating.
But when on, he was incredible. Awesome mark, super speed, superb kick for goal and in the field, had it all
except the right attitude sometimes. (Ok, a lot of the times :D )

Remember the last State game where he won the medal and showed all he was a superstar when playing with all the stars. (sigh)
Also remember when Nick Stevens came across and the service to him went up hugely and he said "whatever they are paying him he is worth every cent." ;)
A flawed genius that we would love to have playing in his prime NOW!

I was shattered when he went, needed stronger leadership and a good clip across the ear.
Too young to appreciate Serg …. So FEV for me

I can only very vaguely remember FOSOS (father of SOS) toward the end of his career....nuggety mid who was under every pack. Unbeatable in the wet and mud - very low centre of gravity. Replays of old games show how good he was - he was fantastic in the 70 GF.

Fev was just a match winner.....regardless of his off field rubbish, he was the reason we went to the footy back in those dark days. On his day, no one could stop him, so just from what I've seen of both, I'd have to give him the nod.

I can't comment, as I never saw Sergio live, only old footage

Word for word this...

4 games stand out for me with Fev.

Round 3 2007. 48 points down against Essendon 3 minutes before half time. Fev kicks 8, we come back and win by 3 points

Round 12 2008. 25 points down in the 3rd v Collingwood. Fev tears Heritier to bits, kicks 8, we win by 30 points

Round 17 2008. 37 points down in 3rd v West. Bulldogs. Fev tells Bulldog Trainer he has a front row seat, kicks 6, we win by 28.

Round 11 2004. The goal from 50 out on the boundary (his 7th) against the Crows at Football Park to win the game.

Not many in our history could have done those things. I'm happy voting for him, unhappy he didn't do it more often.

Me: My thoughts: WOW - Luckiest fella in the world, no matter what - had a great life!! So envious.
And big thumbs up to you in your endeavors to get to the games. Love it.

You have summed up Fev's ability and attraction perfectly. With Fev, I am like that parent who says his kid does no wrong. Outside criticism was met with: "Nah. No. You are wrong" But within it was:" Gawd. What the hell, you're killing me". For me, his good easily outweighs his bad. Have stated previously that Jezza and Diesel are my two all time favourite Blues players. Unashamedly a massive Fev fan and makes my top 5 - he was a cracker!

Petulant!! Good word that... ha ha

I wish I was as sure as you they've actually gone.

Fev. A genuine light. Part of a very talented team at the start. But let down by management every step of the way. Couldn't get over himself and sacrifice his own ego for the team. But you couldn't blame him when you found out about the shambles of a club he ended up in.

A flawed genius.

Saw 1970 but don't remember Serge! Will now re watch and pay more attention. Points for sons and grandsons.

But this goes to Fev.
