Any thoughts on Andy Maher's prophetic vision from this week's podcast? - Brisbane trained cherry ripe for the start of the season... now other sides are up and going, they get smacked by Essendon.

RIP Rod :'(

Thanks for that BlueGum. I can’t like your post. Galty provided us older Blues with plenty of entertainment. A mark and kick man who had the longest legs in recorded history. Well that’s how I remember him. He had the tightest shorts before you know popularised tight pants.

RIP Rodney. Safe travels.

Despite not necessarily being the hardest worker on the track or the ground, Galt played a key role in our re-emergence during the 1978 season after Jezza took the reins, kicking 49 goals for the season. Unfortunately Peter Brown was preferred to him in the 2nd half of the 1979 season, resulting in Galt missing the opportunity to finally play in a premiership after being a member of the Saints' team which finished runner up to the Hawks in 1971.

Sad to see he has died at a relatively young age.

I would have thought it would be a little later they fell away, we will see in the coming weeks.

Ok then. What are your ideas in making it a level playing field? What are your thoughts on Carlton as a club having more of a fair go. How can it happen in your ideal world. Because it’s clearly BS at the moment how we are targeted by the media and AFL. Yes wins will make them quieter but they will still cut us down every chance they get. It’s pretty tough to believe in yourself as a team though when you are continuously being told you are no good.
There is strength in rejection, in holding fast against the tide of the forces against you; in taking a deep breath, and saying, "No."

What we are arguing over is not the placement of Carlton people into positions of power; I'd be all for that. What I'd want from them, though, is merely for them to increase transparency of processes within the AFL corporate body, and to attempt to instigate processes which would cultivate a level playing field. What this would look like in a real sense is reducing the games played per year from 22 to 17 (one game against each side, with home/away rotated one year on/off) to reduce the influence of fixture on ladder position; I would have - via electronic vote - a jury of players and coaches who adjudicate on each and every tribunal decision, with the number of votes required for conviction being set at the 60% mark to avoid a block of voters obtaining advantage.

I would have a new structure, in which the CEO is directly held responsible for the quality of their decisions, and I would professionalise the umpiring corps, to ensure collective interpretation of the rules. The rules themselves would be more black and white, with incorrect disposal being placed front and centre to avoid the rugby-lite image the modern AFL possesses. I'd increase the amount of umpires on the field by 1-2, and set them around a stoppage situation, with the clear intent of cutting through the holding and the niggle; first free seen is paid. Dispense with the ex-player driven 'let the game flow, don't pay free kicks' nonsense; it increases the impact of individual free kicks.

Those are some of the changes I'd make, off the top of my head. I'd have to put more time/thought into it.

Tell me this to. How is it being corrupt by having a say? How is being corrupt by having strong people who have supported/work for Carlton and are passionate about our club striving for these positions. You say change the system, has it changed ever? The AFL is run by ex footballers. The media is run mostly by ex footballers. Footballers that played for AFL clubs. You want everyone in those positions to be impartial and unbiased, tell me how this happens. It’s never going to happen. Football as does all sports is upheld by the people who play, support and love the game. Without this it ceases to exist.
Great idea. Like I said above, this is not where we disagree.

The system changed to our detriment in 1990, when the VFL became AFL, the draft was introduced - removing our zones - and introducing the salary cap - reducing our capacity to outprice our competitors. This was done ostensibly to make the game fairer, and it was done to allow all clubs to compete in a level playing field. It has happened before; it can and it will happen again.
Ideally the AFL should be run by a representative from each club with the games best interest at heart. This is the only way to make it fair. Human nature and biases take too much effect on the decisions made and unfortunately for us. We are Carlton a team everyone else hates.
Collingwood were precisely that for decades; our issue is rather different from theirs.

We have been shit for so long after being great, and we are experiencing the type of schadenfreude that only happens when someone/thing great falls and falls hard. I've said this before on here, but we - as a supporter base - respond the most to what stings our pride; it's why people like Cornes are able to obtain employment as a journalist without much by way of credentials. He can point to us, and at exactly what he'll say that'll get them the most clicks.

As for what you started with in there, great idea again. This is what I mean, and what I want. It has nothing to do with a utopian ideal of the AFL, and everything to do with setting up the sport to be the best version of itself.
Believe what you want and argue till the cows come homes. But the fact is, the only way to make it fair is to have a voice yourself. One thing is certain in life. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. For “the squeaky wheel gets the oil”.

As for the name calling... I’ll leave that up to you to argue between yourself, as to what I’d call you.
I argue, a lot. I enjoy it, and I enjoy the combative nature of some of these arguments. I agree with you as to the nature of things as far as that goes, but I'm never so pessimistic that I feel any situation as irretrievable, or any system so broken as to be completely discarded. That is what I'm saying here, what I said first.

You started the name calling. If you want to play, I'm perfectly happy to oblige, but you clearly don't like it.

Question if anyone can answer - at the end of the game Weiters addressed the playing group. I'm curious if this would be pre-planned for him to do so, or whether this is Weitering chosing to do so in the moment?

Crippa was being interviewed at the time .imo Weits showed leadership and done it of his own bat .
It was well done imo..

I liked the Pagan appointment

Last year was unacceptable - I don't care if it's a rebuild, that was a disgusting season that I want erased from my brain! o_O:thumbsdown:

And Pagan's not just assessing Bolton's performance, he's there to ensure all coaches are performing to an elite level

Fmd when did we bring Dennis back?

Pretty sure Bluey is getting Pagan and Walls mixed up. The only reason Denis' name has popped up is because Jon Ralph decided to ask him for something to write about the club & Jack

Speaking on Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight, Herald Sun AFL reporter Jon Ralph said Pagan had told him he believed Jack Silvagni needed to request a trade.

“I spoke to former Carlton (coach) in Denis Pagan and he talked about the issues of being at a club when your son is on the list — he was of course the coach, we know that Stephen Silvagni is the list manager,” Ralph said on Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight.

No, by freedom I was referring to freedom of mind. Our players are either making panic decisions or not pulling the trigger as they're waiting too long and can't decide where to go. There's no freedom in decision making. It has been restricted and looks a bit unnatural.

Wasn't advocating to turn us into a ratten style team.

Fair enough. Thanks for clarifying. Its been such a bolts bash fest over the past few days that I made incorrect assumptions... My point still stands pointed at some of the other posters on here- with knee jerk reactions to what was a gut renching end to a very hard fought contest. No shame in our performance IMO
