Analysis The Coach – Simon 'Standard Practice' Goodwin: It's time to go (for real this time)

Yeah, it's like Ross Lyon stacking their coaching panel with ex-Saints legends.

Looks kinda fun and nostalgic on paper but doesn't work in reality (especially if they have no coaching background).

Does Nathan Jones even have any actual coaching experience beyond doing special comments for channel 7?

Surely any random coach from the state leagues would be a better fit / more experienced.

Plenty of assistant coaches don't. Goodwin was named as Essendon assistant coach the year he retired from the Crows.
  • Damien Hardwick started at Hawthorn as an assistant coach the year after he retired from playing
  • Chris Scott started at Freo the year after after he retired from playing
  • Sam Mitchell started as an assistant at West Coast the year after he retired from playing
  • Adam Kingsley started as an assistant at Port the year after he retired from playing
  • Adam Simpson started as an assistant at Hawthorn the year after he retired from playing
There are so many more examples. You're just making up stuff to melt about again

What have I made up? That an experienced coach would be better than a channel 7 commentator at coaching ?

'Made up' perhaps isn't the right phrase. But you've again found/generated something to whine about from basically nothing.

I've always found the rhetoric around assistant coaches funny, particularly new/untried ones. Who has a clue whether he'll be good in the role or not? Would've been the exact same in all the cases I listed above.

Our coaches have been trash. It’s not “generating” anything. Would like to think we bring in proven talent opposed to untried / inexperienced coaches.

Do you really think he is going to stand up to seasoned head coach in Goodwin with his 0 years of coaching expertise behind him?

Most, if not all those you listed had very successful playing careers, something NJ also didn’t have. I like what Jones did for the club but honestly he isn’t the best at communicating, had no experience, had a very unsuccessful career and arguably hasn’t demonstrated much tactical smarts in the game before. Even his channel 7 special comments left a lot to be desired and wouldn’t surprise me if he got the ass from that to.

Ah yes, the playing career argument. It's no wonder then that bonafide stars like Hird, Voss and Buckley have had such outstanding, successful coaching careers, whereas battlers like Clarkson and Beveridge (or someone who never played like Fagan) have seen no success.

Clarkson and Bevo are great communicators and tactical specialists.

Same can’t be said for bomb it forward Jones

Lol. Lots here melting over nothing. How do we even know if he'll be any good or not? Love Chunk and glad he's potentially back at the club. He actually has a very good footy brain. I don't think he's going to be teaching foot skills. Most on here want Goody gone anyway, so who cares who we have as assistant coaches.

Bring Goody all the yes men. He needs more power to fix this properly.
To be fair Jones has been critical on how we move the ball on 7

That said most assistant coaches at most clubs tend to be sucks ups once that get to club land, because the senior coach tends to be their boss and if they get turfed so do a lot of the coaching staff in the cleanout

I mean it goes to show McQualter was the attacking guy at Richmond and had to coach defense with us. Our only hope for attacking footy is either Goodwin seeing the light or getting sacked.

Pretty much

I don't get how people don't understand this, the senior coach makes the style the assistants coach it to their lines.

Some here seem to think each assistant has their own gameplan for each line they coach. A new forward, midfield or anything coach won't make any difference while the senior coach wants contest and defence.
