The Final Story - 1971 Grand Final

Channel Nine is screening a four part documentary series on great VFL/AFL Grand Finals starting this Sunday, September 4 at midday, starting with the 1971 Granny (then goes on with the 1981, 1991 and 2001 years). It is stated in the link the Hawks v Saints game was regarded as the toughest Grand Final in VFL/AFL history. Wow. Having seen all the Hawks Grand Finals I would have thought 1989 would have edged it out quite easily with the amount of sniping going on. Big 'Hi' to Garry Hocking if he's out there. Or maybe they're referring to toughness of a different nature, like... playing out a game with a punctured lung? Not that I'm knocking 1971 at all - rumour has it the ringing from Huddo's ears has finally subsided after that 'accidental' knock from Cowboy Neale.

Is anyone else noticing a common thread of opposition players trying to take out our stars in order to win a flag? Maybe Daisy might 'tap' Buddy in this year's Granny that Eddie Maguire will state was nowhere near his head, at least not on the footage he's seen...

Anyway, I'm rambling. Here's the link if anyone is interested in more info on the doco:

I'd love to see Daisy touch Buddy up....

Even if the 'mop' was propelled from a cannon from 15 feet he'd struggle to wipe the smile from Buddy's face.

Has been a better player for them than Ellis for us until now admittedly, but he couldn't even wear Buddy's Fanta pants.

Good concept from ch9, hopefully the docos are done well.

Aussie rules could really do with some more doco's and behind the scenes style television (we've got enough panel shows already). The channel 7 doco called 'essence of the game' gets played around here almost more often than my 08 gf DVD. Seeing all the boys out on the 'G by themselves with the premiership cup that night still gives me goosebumps.

Anyone else see the short on the Footy Show last night ? Not often one for the wanky, overhyped Channel 9 productions, but it gave me goosebumps. Some of that new footage looked sensational.

Will be tuning in for sure

I read about Hudson being targeted in those days . . . he was just that unstoppable.

The footage on the Ch9 short was great, some of it was in colour, with rare ground level footage, etc. Looked fantastic.

We all have opinions as to the best player we've seen, but Huddo was the most amazing player I've seen. Wasn't very quick, not strong overhead, nor was he a classic kick of the ball in the purest sense.

However, he was pure genius. His read of the ball and clever use of the body made him almost unstoppable as you say.

Don't get me started on Hudson.

This will not be shown in Queensland. Anybody to record?

Channel 9 had nothing to do with these films apart from buying them.
They are done by AFL Media, and it's fair to say that there will be some pretty exciting content coming from this internal AFL media organization in the near future...

Thugging Huddo in the first minutes of the first quarter of the 1971 GF was a dog act I will never forgive. I was a little boy at the time, and I watched that GF in the full expectation Hudson would create a new goal-kicking record.

I blame all future disappointments on that particular moment in time.

It's insane that Matthews and Hudson never won a Brownlow.

But it's a different game now. A brave, new, everyone has-to-be-happy-and-safe world. Imagine Channel Seven showing an AFL Biggest Hits show in today's age. Crackers Keenan. Mad Dog Muir. 'How to Head-butt an Umpire', beautifully composed by Phil Carmen.

Or even just 'Don't Get in an Umpire's Personal Space', with the strikingly vehement foreword by Greg Williams, recently re-printed with the contagiously affectionate prologue: 'I Love to Rub Heads With People I Like' by Jordan Lewis.

oh damn it is not showing in Sydnewy.. how I would have loved to have seen it. maybe someone will upload it to a torrent site..........
