It is a good start getting Lake but it is the midfield's lack of genuine gut runners out of the centre square that hurts us the most.
Whilst this is true, the thing that really kills us is kicking goals from set shots period. Sydney 14.7 91 to Hawks 11.15. 81. We are amongst the worst kicking side in the comp. They had all year to correct it but failed to do so and they paid the ultimate price. Forget about our poor defence ( we were the 3rd best all year ) or our midfield who were great all year. If Clarkson and co cannot recognise this problem and take massive action to fix it then they are negligent as stewards of our team. I fear they are giving this huge problem only scant regard and as such we will suffer the same fate next year. 2013 grand final WCE 15.7.97 DEFEATS Hawthorn 12.21.93.

I agree 100% and have done the kicking for goal thing to death in this thread and others. Incredibly painful to look back and watch round 12 and Buddy, Roughie and co are spraying them and come the granny nothing has changed.

But now watching games again from the year it is clear there are some other weaknesses that havent been given too much airplay given how often we would hit the scoreboard compared to our opponents.

I agree about midfield gut runners RR but someone on BF made the good point that our midfielders waste so much energy helping out our deficient backline that they lack the stamina at the end of the game to run forward.

Thus my feeling that fixing the backline will have a domino effect on the rest of the team and make us a better finals team. We lost the prelim in 2011 in last minutes of last quarter and lost the GF this year in the same way.

Poor kicking needs to be fixed but it just masks the backline problem..

So using a couple of lines to draw some 'zones' you can see the poor conversion.

White lines are 'corridor'
Red lines are 'just outside behind post'

Hawks
Misses
5 Misses Outside corridor
4 Misses Inside Corridor (2 inside behind post line)

Behinds
2 outside corridor
12 Inside corridor (4 inside behind post line)

Goals
4 outside corridor
7 inside corridor (2 inside behind post line)

Swans
Misses
2 outside corridor
1 inside corridor (1 inside behind post line)

Behinds
1 outside corridor
5 inside corridor (2 inside behind port line)

Goals
4 outside Corridor
10 Inside Corridor (6 inside behind post line)

Totals Shots
Hawks (35 shots) 10 from outside 50m
11 Shots from outside the corridor (6 from 50m+) 4goals 2behinds
23 Shots from inside the corridor (4 from 50m+) 7goals 11behinds

Swans (24 shots) 2 from outside 50m
7 Shots from outside the corridor (1 50m+) 4 goals 1 behind
16 Shots from inside the corridor (1 50m+) 10 goals 5 behinds

I think the big thing was there was something fundamentally wrong with our structures in the 2nd quarter. We had not set up properly when the Swans were on the rebound, as they just tore through the corridor essentially unmanned.

We seemed to address the problem in the 3rd and 4th quarter, but unfortunately it was too late. Hopefully we have learnt from that, and we don't see that happen again.

The same thing happened the week before against the Crows........ so it should have already been addressed if it was going to be.

The two big things what I reckon cost us the game:
  1. hardness (normally we're the first at the ball, but Sydney just showed a bit more guts); and
  2. sloppy set shots.

As for addressing them:
  1. hardness - not much we can do there, we're redhot on toughness normally but we played a tough team and on GF day it can go either way.
  2. sloppy set shots - we need to get a permenant kicking coach in there. Why not get Jase out of the boardroom and down to help the lads at praccie during the week?
I reckon we'll be so hungry next year that we'll win it definitely. We got so close this year even with the two problems outlined above.
