Touring Cars The great race and Touring cars, what's your interest now that there's no Holden or Falcon?

Interested in everyone's view on this.

Personally if your interest is still at peak then you're a pure motor racing enthusiast and don't care what brands are racing around.

IDK, but it doesn't look like V8 supercars has lost many if any fans.

I do wonder why this is.

Back in the late 60's into the 70's and beyond it was all about race on Sunday and sell on Monday, Holdens and Fords.

Me? I'll watch the news reports and occasionally flick over for a lap or two, for me as an old timer it's lost its lustre.

First time for me at Bathurst and it looked like there were plenty of people about. The car park was certainly full anyway! Nearly everyone I saw had merch - definitely a higher proportion than an AFL game.

No doubt the lack of Ford v Holden has lost some people but it's probably a bit like F1 where fans have their favourite teams and drivers rather than engine manufacturers.

I'd say I've had a little less interest in the series as a whole, Supercars have some issues they need to resolve which they look to be trying to do at least. Events like Adelaide dragging in outside categories and looking to bring in Indycar next year is the sort of thing others need to look at too

Bathurst though, just wouldn't miss it. Made my 2nd trip up here this year and it appears a lot of people feel the same way. It's an amazing place both on and off track. Won't be my last trip either.

For whatever popularity there is, people complain about the series a lot.

Bathurst has largely remained unchanged through the years in terms of format, and although I'm no real fan of it being a championship round, the races have come down to the end more often than not.

The series itself does have some sizable issues, format being absolutely key, number of rounds being another.

But Bathurst is different, the race still means as much to the majority of people as it always has.

I would say that Bathurst is more than just a race.
Was mentioned on the broadcast yesterday about how some families meet up every year at the event. The race itself appears incidental to the social event that occurs on the mountain.

It's different now.

There's something weird about supercars and the fandom for it.

It's not really any different to any other sport.

People whinge about the AFL and its rules, perceived bias, the EPL and the mega money, pretty much every sport has its social media whingers.

It would've been the same back then, there's just many many vehicles for people to use.

I'm not as passionate as I was growing up when there was a greater variety of makes and different classes, and my interest has waned even further now that the Aussie cars have been replaced by Yankee Mustangs and Camaro's but I still watch Bathurst every year and I'll still watch the Championship when it is shown on FTA.

The lack of "Aussie" cars in the series is a big deal but unfortunately something that isn't going to change.

I liked the class racing too, though I'm only just old enough to have experienced it. Supercars won't allow it though, they want to be main and only show.

The series has its issues that most people aren't keen to discuss, other than Scott Pye.

The race organiser's like the race to finish sometime between 5 and 6 in the evening and because the cars are now around 5/10 seconds a lap faster than a decade ago the race is generally completed in around 6 hours.

When I was a kid it used to start at 9am and it would take over 8 hours to complete.

Interest isn’t what it used to be for sure, still watching today though.
Mainly due to life and kids, tend to watch more f1 now, helped due to being at night and not wasting valuable day time.

Going by the polls, 42% have voted they like Mustangs and Camaros, I wonder if it would be higher if it was Commodores and Falcons.

As a kid growing up in the 70s this race and these touring cars is what sparked my love for Holdens, in particular Toranas, Ford were the opposition, like Pies v Blues, there was a rivalry. Was always talked about in the school yard.

It was literally race on Sunday sell on Monday, you're were either Holden or Ford, it actually was tribal on varying levels, even extreme levels.

Now it's just purely a format and a race for racing enthusiasts, unless you're a 'Redbull' fan, even then that would've originated from being a fan of a Holden car / team, not coz it's 'Redbull', or 888, first thing I think of is Falcon. It's not like 'I'm Redbull' like 'I'm Holden'

I guess maybe I should've put this as the op.

So what is the interest now that the bulk of the tribalism is gone? I can only think of motor racing for the racing enthusiast, there's no 'team' to align with, unless that team is Chev or Muzzie, in which case you may as well align yourself with Coles or Woollies. Doesn't rate as a tribalism to me.
