Only in the world of Carlton is being 7th in football operation expenditure an excuse for failure.

And right there sums up everything that is wrong with that club.

It sums up reality. The top 4 expenditure clubs usually finish in the top 4. Why? The obvious + they have 3 weeks of finals expenditure included in their figures.

Lets hope the coaching selection is wider than Ratten and Eade....We need the new breed coaches that comes from the pedigree of the swans, geelong, collingwood or hawthorn stables....who has been influenced by Leading Teams...takes a long term view but not too long term view....does not get flustered....is able to quickly assess the team...lift those with talent....pass on those whose talent can't fit the team....and can work a team of coaches....and believes that Port Power can be a long term force in the AFL

We are Port Adelaide.

Rucci writes today that Neale Daniher is not a contender for any job at Port but may have been KT's choice for Primus's mentor.

Keep swinging Rooch. ;)

He'll glance something he swings at eventually.

Thanks for the link. I tried to find it when I posted info in the licence thread discussion 4 weeks ago, from the hard copy of that article, which had a table of figures and which I put into a spreadsheet last year

If you look at the table in my post - Carlton in 2010 non player portion of footy ops spend were only middle of the pack ie equal 7th and 8th when player salaries are included.

See figures in a table at post #92

Thanks REH the figures are illuminating. Always appreciate your work.

**does anyone know how to sticky that thread for future reference?

rucci is full of it....

What is the general thought here on guys like harvey, laidley, and simpson?
Harvey is the only one I'd be remotely open to of those 3. Had made progress at Freo and nobody will ever know whether Lyon is primarily cashing in on his good work. Be very happy to have him in an assistant's role but trails a few others for me as head honcho.

Laidley = going backwards, symbolises the failed previous administration, doesn't provide fresh eyes and insights

Simpson = needs more time & exposure before being a senior coach IMO but I don't know too much about him

Yes, didn't get the time he was needed at Freo

No. No.

Not ready yet, but if he was the man i wouldn't be going to down to Alberton with my pitchfork

Pretty much this. Regarding Harvey, as I posted in another thread, 4 years ago Freo's list looked shot, nothing but a couple ageing stars, some middling senior players and a bunch of rookie listed players. The development of the lower half of their list and subsequent rise up the ladder under Harvey was remarkable. While I'm not totally cognisant of the reasons behind his departure I'm definitely intrigued.

Are these guys being interviewed as well Phoenix? We should be awfully close to an announcement by the end of this week...

True, in any individual year it makes sense that the top 4 finish up the top due to the greater number of games played.

But Swann's comments to me were just indicative of Carlton's approach to football, all money and no heart.

Relatively speaking it wasn't too long ago that North were winning premierships, Melbourne were making grand finals, the Dogs were making prelims and we were finishing top of the ladder every year. The correlation between success and expenditure just seems so damn strong at the moment since the big Victorian clubs with West Coast were up and about this year, but I'm not buying that causation has been proven here- after all if we were making blanket judgements from just the past 3-4 years we could imply that being an interstate side is a big disadvantage.

Chris Ladhams is not coaching Jervois in the RMFL next year we could look at him, he likes to coach from the back of a ute that has to be a bonus

Oddly open to all 3.

Thought Harvey was hard done by but he did well with what he had at Freo.

Laidley my principle concern is whether he'll be able to committ to a full term outside of Victoria.

Simpson is the real smokey, has been very under the radar, still open to him though.

Im not convinced bRyan was the only leak...... I believe there have been some major leaks at board level also.

bRyan was the only one stupid enough to get blatantly caught I guess

as for coaches, I thought Port were meeting eade and ratten in adelaide, but have been told its in Melbourne (rooch was right!) but Ratten has expressed a desire to visit alberton also which shows his keeness.

I dont have all the info, but as short of a race as this seems from the outside (eade v ratten) apparently it is much wider on the inside. A number of people are being spoken to, and whilst it still may come down to eade v ratten, they are definately doing its homework on a wide variety of applicants.

im convinced they must be interviewing for another assistant also by some of the names im hearing. People who are clearly not ready to be a head coach etc.

So you mean people not listed on the wider head coach market at Port ... ie lesser types than Cameron, Hinkley, Simpson types ?

well I must admit I included simpson in the lesser group, but yes - the names im hearing are definitely people who couldnt be looking for a head coaching role (ie a guy like cameron bruce) ..... Im not sure if they are being interviewed for positions, or just for advise/brain picking etc - im limited in the info I get, am left to put pieces together sometimes, this is one of them....

I find this section of the conversation quite Ironic :)

Just needs to grow a beard and pointlessly half-kill himself chasing a footy and Facebookers will be screaming for him to get the job.

bRyan was the only one stupid enough.
You can insult my family, you can insult my friends, you can even insult me,

But do not insult bRyan.
