What a great political weapon that has been for Labor, especially in the eastern suburbs where they've often struggled. Give the people an ambitious public transport project and they'll often get on board, and the party of no will likely say no like they usually do and cost themselves (except perhaps the NSW branch). There's a lesson there for other state Labor parties if they care to learn from it.

It does come with risks, like budget blowouts, or some areas being pushed to the back of the queue and getting resentful about it. I suppose Vic Labor has been fortunate that Wyndham Vale and Melton haven't turned on them despite their railway electrification being pushed back indefinitely.

When the Federal Liberals have been dominated by the Sydney branch for three decades Melbourne is bound to get screwed on funding. Add the success of Andrews, and the fact Sydney had a Liberal state government and Melbourne gets screwed worse.

The federal Liberals have basically blocked Melbourne infrastructure spending for a decade because of their never ending sook about the East West Link project.

And the huge disadvantage Victoria has is mining. NSW sells shit loads of coal and gas, as does Queensland. WA sells a crap load of ore and even SA has their share of mining. Victoria simply does not have the income generated by mining - hence we have debt while the others do not.

happy to be proven wrong but i sense theres been a decades long process to redesign the victorian economy around its university precincts (a knowledge economy) .... very american in its thinking ..... a plan that could prove very lucrative if done well

when viewed in this light the SRL makes a lot of sense (its been said here and elsewhere that monash campus and surrounding area will soon emerge as the second biggest economic zone in this state ...... latrobe has very big ambitions for its campus as well)

And the Sydney Liberals hate it. Morrison's resistance to Victoria having the mRNA vaccine facility was real - but it could not go anywhere else. I think the state government simply announced it anyway without federal support which came later.

Sydney's infrastructure is indeed ahead of Melbourne's, but that's not just from the past decade, it's something that developed over the course of the past 75 years. Notably, Sydney got rid of most of their level crossings back in the 50s whereas Melbourne's have only been removed en masse within the past decade.

It’s very deliberate. SRL stops are at Monash Clayton, Burwood (Deakin) and Bundoora (La Trobe).

The idea is to create knowledge / research / work hubs. The Monash hub will likely be heavily focused on medical, with Monash hospital constantly being upgraded and the new heart hospital now open on the uni campus.
