My problem is space - I live in a small apartment, and I don’t have a big dining room table or anything.

I will have to sort them, I just don’t know how yet.

Sorting by colour is the best.

Just like with crayons, closets and people.

...just joking, mods! Please don't ban me.

Probably best for parts for a single set, but being colourblind, I find it necessary to sort the more common pieces (eg 1x1 plates) separately, and then into colours, so I can make sure I don't add the wrong colour piece. The quantities in the parts list help with this.

Also, for an entire collection, many collectors say it's easier to sort pieces into individual parts rather than colours if you don't have the space to separate both, the logic being it is easier (for example) to find a black 2x1 brick in a container of 2x1 bricks than in a container of black bricks.

No, I meant I don't know how to sort them in terms of space - how to do it, where to put them, where to build. I think I'm going to end up using a bunch of lego shipping boxes to sort it.

Hmm that sounds dodgy ;)

For me with sorting that if not much space I would get some clear freezer bags (cheap) and sort all the main colours into a bag each.
Then all the out of the ordinary bit like the printed pieces into a separate bag.
You could do that in handfuls while sitting in a chair surrounded by the bags and the freezer bags make it easy to see what is in the bags.

You could then further sort down each colour bag into sizes of pieces by size of brick.

Hope that helps. PS if you lived in Adelaide I would enjoy doing this for you.

I have some cheap stackable containers with compartments from Ikea for this - I think it's these ones GLIS Box with lid, transparent, 34x21 cm - IKEA.

For set storage I buy a pack of 6 10l clear storage containers from Officeworks for $22 - Ezy 10L Storage Containers Value 6 Pack.

A few Christmas-themed sets on sale at Lego.com this week - if you're into Christmas Lego this would be a good time to add to the collection as these sets are often hard to get closer to the date. Some freebies for VIPs also, although there's no current GWP unfortunately. Double points on City, Friends, Technic and HP too.

There's some good deals on Amazon Prime Day.

Botanical Gardens down to $95.
Daily Bugle down to $400.
Optimus Prime is down to $190, I'm getting real close to pulling the trigger on that
The Friends space academy is less than half price.
Lego City hospital down to $88

That's just the highlights of the first 2 pages - there's a bunch of stuff there.

I'm probably not a buyer, with the possible exception of Optimus Prime, but it's only cos I have a stack of Lego and there's nothing else on the market that I'm really desperate for.

Botanic Gardens was $79 in the Target sale but it seems to be OOS now, so the Amazon price is OK. Also the International School is almost half price at $85 if Friends is your bag.

Finally got to sit down tonight and start my Mighty Bowser set.

I guess it makes sense so that we end the build with the more fun parts, but it was a little bit disappointing to crack open the manual and see that we're just tackling a big grey podium for the first few bags.

A lot of grey in those podium bags

Build was pretty standard at this point, unsurprisingly. It's quite a long podium and I found it took a while before it held together properly, which was a bit frustrating because it fell in half every time I picked it up, but other than that the only other notable part of this build process I thought was this step here, with a completely top down view, which I assume feels a bit like building one of those Arts sets.

4 bags done and one podium, but no Bowser. Time to fix that. Introducing: The Not-So-Mighty Bowser!

Or, even better, the Mini Bowser!

Onto the fun stuff next time.

You really forget how time moves on with Lego and how useful the staged bags are.

You just gave me flashbacks to building Tower Bridge, and I got loads of plastic containers to sort into - and it easily took a whole day to sort the lot.

I remember one of my friends patiently explaining to a third friend, in the comments of my FB photo of the sorted bricks, that no, you could not realistically one-pile a 4000+ piece set.

You're right. When I dismantle sets I always repack in the original stages - takes much longer that way but at least it means they will be easier to rebuild.

I'm starting to wonder if I'm a crazy person.

I've had this MOC idea for about a month, I have all the pieces in my lego cart... except one.

I would've spent at least 6-7 hours over the last few weeks trying to find this part. I'm sure I've seen it before - but I've even gone through the piece lists for everything I've built recently and I can't find it. I've searched the lego store, including literally going through 64 pages of "black" pieces. I've googled. I've looked on brickmart.

Did I imagine this piece existing?

If anyone knows of a little rubber part that connects "Outer Cables" please let me know, it's driving me insane. The black outer cables don't come long enough, hence the need for connectors, and if I have to use technic pegs I won't end up doing it, it'd completely ruin the look.

(Frustratingly if you google outer cable connector pieces or anything like it, it will give you instructions for motorised sets.)

I've been looking at different kinds of rods I might be able to use, but I'm not overly familiar with the pieces, and the lego shop doesn't actually tell you how long they are in terms of measurements or studs.

Interesting question :thumbsu:. Is the piece you're thinking of the little rubberised lipstick piece here BrickLink Reference Catalog - Part 93094pb03? I've just done a quick test of this and it's too thick to fit inside outer cables, but being rubber you could file it down to do the job. Another thought I had was you could use the metal train axles if your join was dead straight. Haven't tested this but I can see if I can dig one up if that would help.

(HP wand pieces also fit neatly into the cables, but being tapered with handles that's not going to help join them, unless again you wanted to file the piece)

The lipstick can join two pieces of the rubber cable (as used in the pneumatics) but I guess that's not a substitute for what you're planning.

I guess there's also the option of getting one custom-made or 3D printed?

Cheers for that.

I found an alternative option that I might like even more... it just requires an extra $40 worth of pieces. (although it ticked me over to free shipping, so swings and roundabouts.)

I'll probably leave them in the shopping bag for a few days and see whether we get double points in the next week or 2 given I've ended up needing about $155 worth of bricks (that are largely only in 3 colours!)

Got a nice little tax return, looking at the batcave, what do you guys think of it? Worth the price tag?
Congratulations :thumbsu:. Batman's not my thing and I'd never be able to display something like that in our living space :p, but it is a very cool-looking set that gets very good reviews. Aside from the box itself I think it would be an interesting and varied build. There's always the thought in the back of the mind that there might be a double points event or desirable GWP coming up, but sometimes if you want something and you've had a bit of a windfall, you just have to take the plunge. Please share your build here when you get it

Yeah, I'm hanging for the vip or gwp option. I'm gonna buy it regardless, should probably finish hedwig first and rebuild my Hogwarts Castle.

I don't know anyone who has pulled the trigger yet - I think a lot of us are in the same boat where it's cool, but it's not $600 worth of cool.

If/when Lego stores put them on sale for $400 I can see them running out the door. As much as the online reviews have been hit and miss, I think this is an example where people would've jumped all over it if it were in a better price range.

I suspect to some extent Lego is still testing the market with these seemingly over-priced mega sets. There'll always be those for whom money is no object (for example, luxury car sales in Australia are running at record highs), but there'll be a lot more willing to buy at lower price points.

Personally I'd love the new Technic Crawler Crane, but it costs as much as a nice weekend away, so pretty hard to justify. I've missed all of the latest big Technic sets for the same reason. I used to try and get them all.

Hopefully if the economy ever settles down prices will become more reasonable.

TL;DR I agree with you :thumbsu:

Yeah, it's essentially a weeks rent, which in perspective is pretty expensive, but the old tax man looked after this year and we've paid a few months ahead with rent. I'm also considering afterpay, it's an option I'm not familiar with but it could be an alternative.
