The MCG should always host the Grand Final post pandemic.

The fact is the Grand Final has a contract at the MCG until 2059, which will not be altered. Any sane person would know that is not long enough. They should extend it until the 21st Century.

The game will probably be played with a round ball by then and be no physical contact.

Not a bad idea. QLD gov paid 10 or so mill for the 2020 GF. The AFL could adjust the bidding price for inflation each year. It's not a bad workaround for the contract if, as you say, you have specific standards for crowds, infrastructure, playing surface, and stadium facilities.
The AFL and MCC would meet their $$ needs, and inadvertently improve the game's standing nationally.
...The people win as much as they are able to with the current leadership.

How many MCC members would drop off if the Grand Final was only played there every 2 or 3 years, or on merit.? Answer: None.
Considering that circa 40-60k don't go to any events, but keep it up primarily for GF access in case their team qualifies...you may need to rethink that.

If you were a Melbourne supporting MCC member and had paid your dues for 30 years to get best access to a GF and the one time your club makes it having an MCC membership doesn't give you access, why would people pay anymore?

All of a sudden that guaranteed pool of $45m in revenue from people who don't actually attend events looks shaky....why take the risk?

That some think the league and the sport will resemble anything like today’s league in 40 years really boggles the mind. Money will eventually reek havoc with the AFL.
in 40 years the location might not matter because we can all buy a virtual seat to use with our home brand 50k 200fps vr rig

Lol. This as idiotic as your Why don't you just wait for 30 years and join the MCC even if your based in Timbuktu? I'm beginning to believe you are as stupid as your avatar suggests.

have you met rich people? they pay to be put on the waiting list, in the hope theyll get a seat in 25 years

Why do you think people put themselves on a waiting list for 25 years, and then a large proportion don't bother actually attending events each year once they get the membership.....it is the GF access IF their team makes it that is cherished.

And they'll still have grand final access if their team makes it at the mcg. Or there might even be some reciprocating arrangement that mcc members get an allocation away from Victoria as part of the deal to move it.

If you think the mcc can't sell 15k memberships or whatever it is you dont realise how easily people are parted with their money.

Close to 40% of MCC members don't live in Melbourne, and 5k reside overseas.

40k MCC members pay their fees each year and never attend an event, another 20k attend 2 or less events....

They are all primarily paying for GF access in case their team qualifies.

In return, their fees pay for stadium upgrades instead of lumping the Vic govt with $1bn plus debts.

Don't want to wait and pay each year just in case your team makes it, then just put aside a 100 a year and then bingo more than enough to fork out for a corporate package ticket if your team makes it....will come out ahead compared to what MCC members pay.

These people would still pay regardless. It clearly is a status symbol. Its also relatively cheap if you are wealthy. Its the same as paying a $3000 annual golf membership and only playing twice a year. If the Grand Final wasn't at the MCG every year, these numbers would not change 1 iota.

Happy to share it around- if a Perth team finishes on top, and wins its finals, strikes me as unfair if it doesn’t then get a home grand final. Same for brissy and Sydney. Can’t think of any reason why that shouldn’t happen.

The MCG people are right, though. The contract isn't changing. All Gil was concerned about was whether to have the GF at twilight or not year. Never said a thing about having the occasional GF outside of the G before 2060. Maybe a new CEO could change things, but it'd probably be another Vic-biased corrupt lackey.

If they are given access outside of Victoria why move it?

No other stadiums have the capacity to offer MCC and AFL Member reserves, plus retain competing club member allocations.

The gripe is that AFL and MCC members are predominantly Victorian. It is unfair that they get access every year, and their is less incentive for SA/WA/QLD fans to wait and attempt to become AFL gold or MCC members.

Back in the 80s, when getting a GF ticket was no drama for most, there was only 15k full MCC members.

Have subsequently expanded and now 60k+ full members, and over 130k memberships for just ~20k seats.

Same with AFL Gold memberships, the main selling point is GF access and better value than a standard club membership.

Take that away, and what are you selling?? Will become like the SACA where you have 25k members.

Hes the idiot that signed the shockingly bad contract. He's not gonna back away from it. It will take his successor, if he has any balls to do it...and that will only come about if there is a constant and concerted push for change. Its unfairness, closed shop corrupt nature, non commercial grubbiness of the filthy contract needs to be exposed and ridiculed.
The Vic clubs and journalists won't do it, it is up to the the clubs and free press outside Dan's Police State to unveil and unmask this atrocity.

Gil is an SA boy.

fu** i pay $350 a year for SACA membership and go to 1 day of the Test Match. Some years I haven't gone at all.
Yep, what barely 25k SACA members....why, because they couldn't work shit out with the SANFL.

If you take away the perk, GF access, you won't have 130k members and a waiting list circa 300k.

It would be like the SACA membership, and no chance in he'll that they would take on $1bil+ in debt to redevelop the stadium....would push it back to Vic Govt, just like what happened in SA.
