GWS are a looming headache for the AFL in the next few years. No question about it.
Gold Coast similar.
You can’t play 20-30% over the odds to keep a core of elite players in a comp that’s salary capped and expect to be consistently competitive.
There’s no way that Josh Kelly or Conoglio are worth $1m a season or anywhere near it. No Melbourne club (apart from North maybe but that’s a seperate AFL concern) would pay those guys that kind of money.
The issue is you then need to fill your team with spuds like Sam Reid who’s probably on $90k a year and wouldn’t get a gig at any other club.
If the reports of Ben King and Lukocius being paid $600k in their third years are also true at Gold Coast they will be in the same predicament in a few years. The likes of Richmond or Geelong might be able to persuade stars to be paid unders to stay together but those new franchises with no tradition or history in non AFL states can’t really do that successfully.
The problem for the AFL is if/when GWS become a bottom 4 club. The exodus of quality players will be swift and brutal from there. Never ending circle.

I still maintain that those two teams were never needed. It was pure arrogance from the AFL.

lukosious and king are both worth the money

Jake Kelly is an over rated prettyboy
Coniglio I’m uncertain of. I don’t think Cameron is getting the best out of him.

What would Cerra and Brayshaw be on in their extended contracts? I would expect around the $600k.

600k is so much. What's the total salary cap, $12,000,000?

So Fyfe - $1,000,000
Cerra & Brayshaw - $1,200,000
Walters - $600,000

That leaves an average of 270k per player for the remaining 35.

Even if you say that 7 players make 150k each that is still under 300k per player for the remaining 28 guys on the list.

600k is ALOT in today's AFL, I do wonder how genuine some of the figures that get thrown around in the media are.

GWS are in real strife. They have their small 10k fan base but they were never going to crack it in western sydney. The swans have a large enough history and following to thrive here in Sydney. GWS have nothing.

Most people in Sydney couldn't name 5 GWS players if you tried.

Throw in the fact the rugby league the two western sydney teams Parramatta and penrith have got their act together and starting the get onfield success at a consistent basis and making top 4. The AFL in western sydney is sliding at a rate of knots

I went to semi final a few years back with Parramatta and north Queensland at homebush and it got 45k. Pretty high for league standars. Compared to GWS and west coast at spotless across the road on the same night got 10k when GWS were up and about a premiership force.

A real sliding doors moment. Hope he makes it good at GWS
Typical f'in West. Hound the guy relentlessly while he is here and then produce a sympathetic article after he's gone. You were the main instigators of him saying it was 10 times worse dickheads. Don't pretend you care about his well being one iota - you didn't and still don't. Scum.

No way that Brayshaw and Cerra are on $600k this year in year 3 & 4? Definitely not Brayshaw anyway. His new 4 year deal is probably close to it.
Wouldnt have thought Andy is on more than $350k in his second contract. Cez maybe a bit more. Remember their current salaries were agreed in late 2018.
Mark Duffield last year said that the going rate for a NAB rising star winner in year 3 & 4 is about $490k. That would be Serong approx salary from 2022.
Gold Coast agreed to pay Ben king $600k in year 3 & 4 reportedly. What he going to do in year 5? You guessed it - look for $800k plus.
Then Rankine and lukocius and Rowell et al will be saying “well if Ben is with that kind of money, why aren’t I...”
In general, the big money ($500k plus) should only start from year 5 in the AFL. Otherwise as Yeti rightly said, the numbers don’t add up
