Interesting to read in the media that the APL (soccer management) sold the grand finals to make up a shortfall in the Paramount deal due to the league not reaching targeted subscription levels. Hope AFL stays clear of Paramount.

Just got home from the game, struggling to think of a more pissweak effort by fans at a sporting event.
It was horrid. MC keepers actions were a disgrace. He started the riot by throwing the burning flare back into the Victory fans. Moron. But the resulting pitch invasion and assaults were disgusting.

The keeper started the riot but I agree - the assaults were disgraceful. But what sort of a moron picks up a burning flare (laying harmless on the ground) and tosses it into the fans?
What sort of moron throws a flare onto the ground, landing close to a player, you mean?

True - but happens every week in soccer. This idiot tosses it back into the fans. Thats what started the riot. I still don't understand how they get so many flares into the ground.

Are you serious?? Blaming the keeper? FFS.
Not only - MV fans were animals, but there was no riot until the keeper threw the lit flare back into the fans. Fact. Watch the replay. The fans will get their punishment as they are easily identifiable but the keepers action provoked the riot. Similar thing happened at the other end and the MV keeper simply placed the burning flares behind the goals - he didn't toss them into the crowd.

FMD. Are you saying that it was the crowds right to feel threatened because the keeper through a lit flare into the crowd? Did the keeper not feel threatened to have lit flares thrown at him? Why didn’t the crowd attack whoever lit the flares in the first place.

You’re an idiot for even considering putting any blame on the keeper.

Dude. It's just missed him.

If nobody threw a flare at the goalkeeper, then none of this happens.

I'll admit I'm not a hardcore A-League follower these days, but I'm pretty sure flares aren't actually lobbed into the playing area? Even flares themselves don't think are a weekly thing either?

Not condoning Glover's reaction, but if the flares aren't there, that shit doesn't escalate either?

These aren't Victory fans either or football supporters in general. Just bored bunch of knuckle draggers looking for an excuse to be dickheads.

Victory fans are the scum of the earth.
Some of them, mate. Maybe a large number, but certainly not all. I'm a City fan fwiw, but that crap last night was absolutely everything that people are saying. Sad for football, and even more sadly the exact same reason that we didn't go last night. I've been heckled and shoved at Chelsea, physically intimidated by Arsenal fans after a Wednesday home win, abused at Millwall, Charlton and Kings Cross Station etc etc, but I am quite happy to keep my best little mate away from Victory games.

Thats also why I don't go. I'm a MV supporter but never been a member. The couple of games I went to the supporters were morons - almost impossible to enjoy the game.

They were this time around, both ends. I just don't understand how they get the flares into the ground.

Probably not the wisest move by Tom Glover, but proportioning any blame to where Australian football is now to anyone other than the Neanderthals who invaded the pitch and assaulted him, misses the mark by more than Harry Kane's penalty last week.
The neanderthals are to blame for their reaction and there will be plenty or repercussions. But Glover's response was disgraceful and dangerous. Have to ask MC (their home game) why the security was so poor too. MV are going to pay a huge price for this and rightfully so.

Glover's response was dumb. But the flare was thrown disgracefully and dangerously close to him. If his actions were disgraceful and dangerous, I'm not sure what level of hyperbole you can go to with what happened next. On the list of blame, he's pretty low. The riot was always going to happen, and was part the way there already with flares at both ends being thrown. It wasn't like the fans were politely viewing the game and quietly discussing the intricacies of Victory's defensive formation. They came angry, they came looking for a fight and they just needed an excuse to go to the next level. Sadly Glover provided it.

Not sure what the security procedures are at A-League games so wouldn't know if that was Melbourne City's fault. They don't own the ground. I mean, do North Melbourne organise the security at home games at Marvel Stadium? I doubt it, but I honestly don't know. Maybe the A-League is different.
