Yeah it was claimed by Lockyer in 1827 at King George Sound, right on the Southern Coast. French names abound down south, as well as some Dutch ones, most famous being Rottnest (Rat Nest) Island.
Would 'Rat Nest' be a reference to the quokkas?

Yep exactly right. Thought they were massive rats.Would 'Rat Nest' be a reference to the quokkas?
The French never had a permanent camp in Western Australia. One of their scientific expeditions spend some time in Albany but it was only a month or two. 1802/3ish I'm going to say. The name of the expedition eludes me, but it wasn't d’Entrecasteaux.Isn’t that the only reason the English set up camp in Perth? The French had started up a camp in Albany (a much better natural harbour) and the English, fearing another Canada/US scenario sent an expedition to colonise WA in Perth

Is it me or does Banfield just bring out the best in people? I don't see another footballer's thread elevated to discussion of Australian history and enlightened by the botanical artistry of early 1800s French explorers. Watch and learn Nic Nat. C'est magnifique
It was a tough contested game against Melbourne, good chance for the boys to rehab and get some time away from footy... and prepare for a 2nd half of season assaultI hate the bye! Banfield was on a roll
Just quietly everyone, I am so here for the Bailey Banfield/Weezer crossover! My favourite song of theirs is the one that goes "Oooh wheee oooh I look just like Adam Cerra..."PLAYERCARDSTART41Bailey Banfield

Hopefully he’s on an island in the sun getting some well earned restI hate the bye! Banfield was on a roll
If it's good enough for [checks notes] Fyfe & Walters, it's good enough for our boy.Waiting for that early two year contract extension!
two of my favourites, so I'm happyNoticed banners and Clark fronting the media more. Both well spoken so makes sense. Wonder they volunteer or get offered up
We should drop this pic from drones when the Tiges are warming up. They'll be overcome with lust and all mob Banners in the forward line, leaving Amiss all alone to kick 20.0 - JL is a genius.

With a schneaky bag of 10Banners to play the Mundy role against the Tigers.
Just when they think they’ve got their foot on our throat, Banners steps out of the shadows.
