After many games of basketball we are finally here. The NBA Finals, 2019.

The Golden State Warriors are participating in their FIFTH, yes 5TH, consecutive NBA finals. Not even the 90s Jordan Chicago Bulls did that. Just let that sink in for a moment. Amazing in todays day and age. Credit to the organisation.

And the Raptors of Toronto. For years the butt of world wide playoff jokes and featuring in many memes of failure. DeMar DeRozen and Kyle Lowry the driving force, but never accomplishing the holy grail. Representing the well mannered Canadians since the demise of the Grizzlies, something had to give. The franchise was becoming increasingly frustrated with seasons of international flights, customs and ESTA applications and nothing to show for it.

But today, with the aid of guard Drake, the dinosaurs have evolved and well fed. How did they do it? Well, remember I mentioned the Grizzlies? How apt that this mob brought in a veteran with Canadian experience (via Memphis) in Marc Gasol. His big frame has enabled and given confidence to athletic wings and 4s defensively. And defensively, there's someone, or something, called Kawhi Leonard. Spurs gave him away to the Torontians for DeRozen. I have looked through Demars twitter and there are no mentions of statements of congratulations for his former team. This must hurt him. Like when Brett Deledio was traded to the Giants, only to watch the Tigers win the 2017 Premiership (AFL). Kawhi and the foe he vanquished today, Giannis Antemtekombposhuek382djvksero, are the futures of the NBA. May their rivalry last forever (at least until Kawhi leaves for the Lakers).

Making this even more momentous is the fact Toronto (was once called York), has home court advantage!

Here is the schedule

So how's the matchup this year? The Raptors have won both contests this season.

In game 44, KD went nuts with 51 points. He was supported by Jerbrenko who had 20 and 9. There was no curry, Green or Bogut. But the Raptors had 6 players in double figures, averaging 19 points each. The game was played in Canada. In overtime.

Game 45, in Oakland, was no contest. Oaklands big three were there, and without KL one would think the Wariors would just rock up and win. But no, they didn't.

That was then.

And then the playoffs came. The warriors took care of business. Clippers in 6, Rockets in 6, and Blazers in a sweep. It looked ominous. Dray Dray is back to his best, and Klay will be looking forward to putting the disappointment of losing a spot (and what 20 million $?) to Kemba Walker in the NBA 3rd team. Curry is just Curry. Doing curry things. Just so everyday. So usual.

The Raptors, beat Orlando, had a hell of a series against the 76ers, and then took a 2-0 deficient against the Bucks. Staring down the barrel the dinosaurs went stuff this and rattled off 4 games and feasted on the bucks carcass. Kawhi announced himself to the world.

It is expected that with KD out, Kawhi takes curry. Can KL keep up with Currys off the ball movement? Can anyone?

C: Bogut Gasol
F: Green Siakam
F: McKinnie? Green
G: Klay Lowry
G: Curry Leonard

This has matchup hell written all over it.

Here are some basic numbers to help you in your assessment

Lowry probably defends Iggy.

Usually its traditionally guards on guards, forwards against forwards. But these days with fluidity and versatility matchups change so often.

I remember in a bulls jazz finals series pippen would guard stockton, leaving harper to guard horny

Warriors in 6.

Golden State need to win to solidify their legacy as one of the great teams. 3 championships is really good. 4 would make them great.

Kawhi has been magnificent so far in the play offs. Hope that continues.

Should be a great finals series.

I reckon Warriors 4-1. Hoping for Curry MVP, media seems to disrespect him and think he owes his championships to KD.
Not sure about the media but the general public basically give KD no credit for his championships where Curry and the rest of the team get it since they did it without him.

I can see why we are favorites, but it's been a bit silly that it seems so one sided.

Do people not remember we just trailed by 15+ points in each of the last 3 games against a decent but not great team in Portland (i.e. a great team wouldn't let us come back and win those games)?
Do people not realize that Durant is pretty good at the basketball thing and he's not playing?
Do people not realize that Toronto just beat the best team of the year 4 times straight?

Seems weird that we are more favored against Toronto than we were against the shitty Cav teams we've played in the last two finals.

I am warming to the Raps more and more.

1/ Dubs have not been steamrolling teams. They have actually been leaving themselves quite exposed. Kawhi will not let them back as easily as the Blazers did.
2/ Blazers are not close to one of the very top teams - particularly with their injuries. Dub's form is false form.
3/ Dubs injuries are massive. Arguably the best player in the world is out! If the Raps can shut Curry down then the Dubs have huge problems.

Maybe I am projecting but the Cavs beat this Warriors team 3 years ago. And without KD and Boogie this Warriors team is not as good as that Warriors team 3 years ago.

31-1 without KD since he joined the warriors.
That is all.

I'm not "rooting" for one team or the other. I'd love to see a game 7 and the winner will be okay with me. I'm just someone who enjoys watching good players and teams. Admittedly, there's a couple of players who do irritate me (for reasons other than ability), but I love watching Kawhi, Steph, Klay, etc. The mere fact that someone is good has never been enough reason for me to dislike them. If Warriors win again, good luck to them. If Raptors win, great ...... although it would be a bit painful watching Drake celebrate :)

Best case scenario for me is Raptors win in game 6 at Oracle, Oakland natives take their collective rage out on Drake

Similar to me. Just enjoy watching great basketball. Still got a foot in the Warriors camp as my wife and son go for them.

Must be tough being a boston fan around them.

My wife is very enthusiastic about them, very passionate, but never gloats or criticises Boston. My son can be a little shit

We went to a few games at Christmas. Did a great tour around Oracle, went down to the court. My son got to sit in Steve Kerr's chair. Stand where Steph stands for his pre game shot, went in the opposition change rooms...

My first thought was Kawhi would defend Curry, but I don't think he could possibly chase Curry around 50 screens on each possession and then be expected to carry the team offensively on the other end. He might just die.

Though in crunch time he'll probably get the job.

If I was coaching Raps I'd have Lowry on Curry in the first half then Kawhi on Curry in second half.
