No it isn't, Atlanta have said point-blank they aren't trading Smith for Gasol.

Why do the Lakers want Smith anyway? He is possibly the worst possible fit next to Dwight, all it does is encourage him to take those stupid 3's and long 2's so Dwight has space to work with.

the rumour persists. my sources have advised.

i dont want smith.

My brother was a Sonics fan in the 90s (Kemp's dunking seemed to reel them in)- that Kemp/Vin Baker trade was an eye-opener in retrospect..

NBA moving that team to OKC was farcical. Seattle was always a great basketball city, just as Sacramento is now.

The complicated world of the NBA 'franchise'

NBA moves Jazz from New Orleans to Utah
NBA creates Charlotte Hornets
NBA moves Hornets from Charlotte to New Orleans
NBA creates Charlotte Bobcats two years later
NBA moves Sonics from Seattle to OKC
Now the NBA might move Kings from Sacramento to Seattle..

Charlotte Bobcat fans would like their old Hornet nickname back from New Orleans. New Orleans fans would really like to be called the Jazz again (name fits for obvious reasons), but they can't get the name back from Utah (for whom the Jazz name is completely inappropriate). Seattle fans are still livid that their team (including a young Kevin Durant) was moved to OKC on the sly, and mostly hate the Thunder now. Some former Sonics fans would like to see the Kings moved to Seattle, and presumably call them the Sonics again, even though it would technically not be the same team. Sacramento fans are pissed as hell at the Maloof brothers, who have had discussions with Virginia Beach (a non-NBA region) about moving the team there..

The NBA- where  happens..
The NBA and Stern have messed with too many franchises over the stretch...

Got banzhammered in the form of likes, so no more likes given out by me... OHGAHD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll never get to 1000 likes by Christmas now.

Feels sad man

Believe it or not, it actually could have been even messier!

The Lakers infamously started in Minneapolis in the 1940s. After the Jazz were moved from New Orleans to Utah, they struggled financially and they were almost moved to Minneapolis in 1986 (who'd been without a team since the Lakers moved).. the Minneapolis Jazz?

Eventually, the Jazz stayed in Utah, and Minnesota got its team when the T-Wolves started up in the late 80s (same time as the Charlotte Hornets). The Wolves struggled early on too, and they were also almost moved- to New Orleans in 1994.. the New Orleans T-Wolves?

After trying to buy the Grizzlies from Vancouver, New Orleans eventually succeeded in winning the Hornets from Charlotte in 2002- only for the NBA to start another Charlotte team two years later. George Shinn was close to moving the Hornets again before he eventually sold the team.

So, the LA Lakers nickname is Minneapolis-specific (the Great Lakes). The Utah Jazz nickname is New Orleans specific (birthplace of jazz music and Mardi Gras- while Utah is a Mormon desert state). The New Orleans Hornets is a Charlotte-specific nickname dating to the Revolutionary War which makes no sense for New Orleans. The Jazz would have made equally little sense in Minneapolis, and the T-Wolves would have made no sense in New Orleans (no wolves in the south).

That's the problem with the disposable 'franchise' system- nothing ever comes to stand for anything. I hope to God the AFL learn the lessons of the past 30 years and don't go any further down that road.

Seattle's owners moved them to OKC. Dunno about the other movies (Charlotte etc) but the Sonics moving was all about the owners.

Lol @ Bynum damaging his other knee while bowling. Could become the next Oden. Feel for Philly fans.

Sad indeed...

Your NBA knowledge is great! Where the **** have you been over the seasons!?!?

I agree with the last paragraph also, and it makes for a league and it's brand to become almost shallow and non-significant...

Seattle owners sold the team to a new owner... Then that new owner moved them to OKC... But Stern should've exercised is veto like abilities in the first place to keep that great team alive!

This is somewhat true, but the affair was messy- the NBA could be said to have 'looked the other way' with regards to Clay Bennett's duplicity in dealing with Seattle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_SuperSonics_relocation_to_Oklahoma_City

Interestingly, Bennett is now the chairman of the NBA relocation committee... hmmm.

This documentary is good, if long:

Meanwhile the story is repeating itself in Sacramento..

Check out the tale involving the original Kings owner in the 80s @ 13:45 .. unbelievable!

Too much time reading obscure history, not enough time on BigFooty, obviously ;)
