Re: Why is everyone saying Swan was stiff

Swan did win every other media award

So either:-

The media experts don't know what they are saying or;

The umpires don't know what they are doing.

Take your pick!

Personally I think the media take way too much notice of statistis, and whilst I think Swan had a great year, stats don't always tell the full story. Once the media bandwagon get on a roll its hard to stop

Re: Swan was robbed!

Cheap possessions won't give you brownlow votes. If Swan wants a brownlow medal then he better do some hard ball gets instead of being a bottom feeder. Ablett learned that. Every AFL player should take a leaf out of Judd's games. Watch the man perform. The guy is a freak and to be honest this guy will prolly end up retiring as a triple brownlow medalist. He got rewarded for all his hard efforts.Judd is the hardest worker in the AFL and the Umpires rewarded that last night.

How does Swan not get the hard ball? He's 2nd in the AFL for contested possesions behind Ablett and 5th in the AFL for clearances. You really have no idea do you? At least talk facts if you're trying to construct an argument.

Swan and Ablett clearly the best 2 players for the year. Ablett also underrated by the high standards he has set previous. Averaged over 30 touches and kick 40+ goals, amazing. He also uses the ball better than both.

I'd then have Hodge as the 3rd best player for the year, Goddard 4th and probably others like Selwood, Pendlebury, Montagna, etc in front of Judd.

Re: Why is everyone saying Swan was stiff

Or the brownlow uses a different voting system ??

The media hype put it into every supporters head that Swan would shit it in. Whereas if you look at the odds offered by the bookies you'd realise he was always only slight above a 1 in 2 chance of winning

Which was a hell of a lot more chance of winning than the next bloke if you use your "logic" If you look at the odds Judd was over 20/1 so what's your point?

Re: Why is everyone saying Swan was stiff

I couldn't care less that Swanny didn't win it, I just don't agree that Judd was the best player this year. Swan, Abblet, Pendles, Goddard, Hodge, Sandi all had better years IMO.

Re: Swan was robbed!

a burst player will never win the award ;)

Honestly though, If anyone robbed swan it was his teammates taking votes away from him.

Out of curiosity, When he got his suspension in the finals last year for gouging, that he served this year, was he inelligible last year?
No, he wasnt, as that incident didn't happen in the home & away season, so he was eligible for the brownlow.. bit of a loop hole there don't you think?

Re: Swan was robbed!

I still maintain Swan losing the Brownlow is a huge bonus for us on Saturday.

That will be the first time he can actually take it out on someone.

50 possessions.

That Swan was only ever slightly above a 1 in 2 chance of winning so why in the hell would he be considered stiff as per the thread title?

Yeah, you could argue that Judd was lucky but not that Swan was stiff to miss out.

Get what I'm saying?

Re: Swan was robbed!

Wonder if the constant rotations affect his voting, a bit of 'now you see him, now you don't' for the umpires.

Re: Why is everyone saying Swan was stiff

No doubt that Swan is a good footballer. Prob in the best 10 in the game. But for me, I like to see the most prestigious award going to those guys that are great players and who conduct themselves well off field. Swan has off field baggage and I think he does not fit the ideal type to win the award, even though I know it's got nothing to do with how the umpires vote. Maybe it's a footy god thing.

But for me, I like the Brownlow medalist to be a good role model for the kids. Not always the case I guess....but on this occasion it's a good result.

Pendles?! Hahaha No where near the same calibre of Judd. Not this year. Not any year.

You gotta love Collingwood supporters... :p

Re: Why is everyone saying Swan was stiff

Brownlow winners tend to have elite skills. Therefor Swan did well to finish 3rd. Look at the last decade of winners, speaks for itself.

Living in the past or just plain trolling? I can't decide.

Re: Why is everyone saying Swan was stiff

Do people still think the 'outrage' is about Swan NOT winning?

I would have figured last year would have taught most of you that Swan was NEVER going to win the Brownlow this year, or ANY year for that matter.

The outrage is who DID win. A great player, who didn't have his best year, but played well amongst a team of mostly plodders. THAT'S the issue. I mean hell, if Judd could win it, then why didn't Brent Harvey?

North was only percentage lower than Carlton, Harvey had a great year, not his best, but great anyway, and stands out above most of his team mates a fair way. Why didn't he poll?

Re: Take Brownlow off the Umpires

I'd love it if they took it off them as maybe someone other than a midfielder might win the thing....also the voting method is pretty stupid when you think about it, rewards playing with spuds.

Judd won because he was in a side where others didnt take votes off him.

He's the standout in the blues.

Swan lost because of the pie consistency and because pendlebury, etc took votes off him.

Sandi lost because Barlow etc took votes off him.

Who was there to take votes off Judd in the Carlton games?

He is their Captain and best player by a MILE.

They won games, got in the eight and more often than not they won because of Judd.

Where did this "Judd had an average year" beat-up come from? He had an outstanding year, even by his own standards. And that early season run between rounds 4 and 11 were incredible. People then were declaring him back to his very best. Such short memories. Just have a look at his average clearances, inside 50s, hardball gets, and tackles. - Amazing!

Re: Deepest sympathy to Swan , Ablett, Boyd, Hayes , Pendles etc , Judd didnt play as good as you

Cooney, Cousins and Judd.

Cooney, in a top 4 team with Boyd, Cross, Griffen in the Midfield

Cousins, in a premiership winning team

Judd, in a team that made the GF the next year.... with basically the same team

Please re-quote where I said he had an 'average' year.

I'm not even saying he had a bad year. He had a good year.

He just wasn't the best player in 2010 is all I've said. I find it strange, that Judd wasn't even factored into any other awards including the COACHES, and yet somehow the UMPIRES, who we denigrate weekly somehow got it right?

If Ablett, Goddard, Hodge, Montagna or even Sandilands won last night, no one would have complained.

This isn't about Swan, it's about Judd. He DID have a good year, he just wasn't the best this year. I woulndn't expect Carlton supporters to agree. Considering most of these threads have NOT been started by Collingwood supporters, I'd say it's not exclusive to us either.
