And for what it's worth, in a schoolyard captain scenario (for a real game, not dream team points), i couldn't see myself picking Swan ahead of Judd or Ablett.

It shouldn't matter but don't forget that umpires do take the player's character into account.

Swan robbed??? My arse he was!!! JUSTICE was served last night, any hack/burst player who rests on the bench 20 time a game should NEVER win a brownlow. Juddy tears games open and carries a whole side on his shoulders, he gets tagged heavily and shakes the tag by gut running his opposition to the ground not hiding on the bench. Suck it up maggies cos swan aint in Juddy's league and NEVER WILL BE....

Yeah he was robbed but it's time to move on from it. Watch Swannie carve it up even more so than usual on Saturday. A flag always has and always will mean a shitload more than a Brownlow.

People need to remember that the umpires put their votes in straight after the game and do not have the benefit of stats sheets and possession counts. They give their votes based on who they thought put in the most eye catching performance and had influence on the game. Judd has the ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck and turn it on its head and the umpires took notice - he was the amongst the best players in the games that he was involved in and for this reason is a deserving winner.
Its not Judd's fault that Swan only got 1 vote against West Coast in R12 or didn't poll against Carlton in R 18(The umpires got that one right anyway as Pendles, Beams and Didak were the standouts on the day even if Swan touched the ball more)
The Brownlow winner has often come from a middle - lower placed club with a champion player that attracts votes - 23 medallists have come from Sydney/ South Melb and St Kilda.
Don't forget that Judd also won the 3AW media award so its not as if he had no recognition all year
Well done Juddy and lets see you hold up a premiership cup in a few years

It's not that Swan was robbed. I would've been happy if Ablett or Hodge or Goddard or Hayes won the award.
Judd just had nowhere near the season to poll 30 votes from 19 games.

for once i agree with something you say hodgepodge!!!!
swan wasn't robbed. he was a good chance of winning the medal. but so were each of the other blokes you mention, plus even hayes and pendles had great years in top 4 sides and any of that bracket would have been worthy winners
judd did not have an outstanding year by any measure. he had a solid season in a side that finished lower half of the 8 and a long way off the pace. 3 votes in a 10 goal loss to the pies early in the year ?? please umpires are you having a lend of us?

Even if Judd didn't get as many votes and was suspended, here is little hint, Swan wouldn't have won.
If anyone was robbed, it was Gary Ablett who finished a clear second on 26 votes.

The bigger farce about the Brownlow, is that no one other than a mid ever gets to win the thing.
All the players such as Judd, Swan, Boyd ,Ablett etc. are great players no doubt, but let's face it, a back flanker who keeps his man kickless, will never get a vote in the Brownlow.

Swan had a great year,however it is easier to get possesions when your playing in a team thats winning.Judd plays in a much lesser side and dominates not only possesions but also clearances.Juddy definetly a worthy winner.

Swan is way over the odds at 5-1.
He will rack up 30-40 possessions for sure.
If the Pies win there are only two players who can win the Norm Smith.

So hypothetically if say Essendon beat Collingwood by 10 goals but Dane Swan got 50 possessions and two goals, he still doesn't warrant the three votes because his side lost? The Brownlow is an individual award.
Now, now, Bartel and Ablett both managed to win a Brownlow in an even better team than Collingwood is now. Don't make excuses for Swan's failure.
Still beats me how he gets BOG against Collingwood in a 9 goal loss.
