Agreed.the swans havnt got much to offer in regards to picks or players to serve our needs.pick 6 would certainly be something Miller couldnt refuse.
#6 + Gilbee?

cheers!

I'd do that.

I'm a huge fan of Gilbee but if he's asked to be traded, he would obviously rather be elsewhere.

If Ottens were happy with us and RFC were happy with this deal I say jump at it.

my point is the preception that Ottens back could be a problem.there is no concrete evidence to suggest otherwise other than rumours.

cheers!

the guy has had surgery on his back, hasnt he? thats a pretty firm rumour. Im saying back surgery is not corrective, its just temporary pain relief.

6 and Gilbee is actually a bit too much, after what you would consider development put into gilbee + only half a career in Ottens what would otherwise be a full career in a #6 (we should hope)

What we could do is clear some of the players to make room for the early draft picks and then grab an Ottens.

If Ottens were to go into the preseason draft we have a very good position if we can afford the nominated price.
Richmond can't afford him anymore, and then its up to whether Ottens is seen as the hawks answer to its need for a ruckman

I think ottens is a poison pill. hes a good player, but his back will cut his career short. he will have to train very carefully to minimise the rate of degeneration of his back, so that means his fitness will be not what it should be. that means he will play more of a tall forward role than ruck duties.

Im sure he is aware of this and from his point of view he will want a 3 year high paying contract, because that will be about all she wrote for his career.

let him go to one of the rich clubs who can afford to role the dice with that much money for a tall forward/part time ruck. that will be one less club competing with us for other cheaper players with longer careers ahead of them.

would be big shame to use pick 6 on him AND pay him a fortune.

After breaking my back and half a lifetime vsisting chiros and osteopaths, I'm with Stefoid.

Just saw my chiro (a Swans fan) and asked about Ottens. He siad he obviously didn't know anything about his back, and such problems can be handlked (many people have disc problems) but on the balalcne of probabilities, it would get worse.

Definite gamble, and we've already taken one with a boke with bad knees.

I'd let him go eleswhere.

Bombers and Tigers interested in Rohan Smith - 3AW

Why on Earth would the Tigers want Rohan Smith? I know Wallace is over there now but surely hed be retired by the time they were ready to challenege. Given theyd have to give up a good pick theyd be silly to do it. Dogs should ask for a first round pick and take it if they get it. Smiths a good player and loyal servant but you also gotta think ahead.

Don't ask me. Just reporting what I heard on radio from the lips of Gerard Healy.

I have never been able to understand Wallace's recruiting logic.

From a Bulldogs point of view I doubt we would release Smith but we should listen to what is being offered. If a first round pick is on offer then that would be very tempting.

And in the meantime you break down the entire fabric of the team just as we did by trading away Montgomery and Powell.

Think of the impact on the rest of the team to see Smith traded away after so many years as a faithfull and loyal servant. He could have put himself on the market years ago and got heaps more than he did by staying.

Now you want to reward him for that by saying adios when someone dangles a carrot. There's more to trading that the pure economics of the trade.

If we want to expect loyalty then we must return it. Its a two way street.

: I've got a friend living in Adelaide,(dont hold that against me) who heard on the radio over there Brian Harris's name mentioned that the dogs could trade him. But did'nt they just extend his contract, I did read that somewhere.Surely that can't be right. He is going to be a good player for us. What are your thought's on this ??????

Well stated John. I don't necessarily agree with everything you say, however with this you are spot on the mark. Loyalty should be rewarded within a club - too often we see players that have given years of good services treated poorly ala the way Crofty was treated by our former coach.

He has just recently re-signed until the end of 2007. Adelaide won't be getting anywhere near him. :D

Just so I can keep my record intact, we shouldn't be trading Harro either.

By the way, change your club preference if you want today's deal to go through!

If Ottens is too risky maybe we should have a real crack at Troy Simmonds. Would be able to do the excact same job at a cheaper price, slot into our side nicely and it could be a possibility because we have had quite a few trades with Fremantle in the past and have always been able to deal fairly.

if his back is not a problem why are you trying to ******** him off or make him take a pay cut? he is not worth pick 6 and i would hang on to gilbee. bowden and our 20 odd pick would be on the money.the guy failed to get a brownlow vote this year and is injured all the time. :(

Simmonds would be the less risky of the two.

Like i said i don't necessarily agree with everything you say and on both these points definitely not!!! :D

Ottens officially is sick of playing for a club that has no short term prospects (read 3 years) of playing in a grannie, and wants to go to geelong or sydney.

That rules us out on two counts (a) we cant aford him and (b) he doesnt want to come here.

So we'll have to talk about someone else

IMO, Simmonds would be a good get for us.

I was playing one of those (stupid) trading games and I managed to trade Rohan Smith for Ryley Dunn, but since I've been thinking about it...look we can't trade Rohan, even if other clubs offer him bucketloads.

The best way to instill something into someone else (values, morals, mindsets, behaviour, action, etc) is to be shown by someone. We need the Johnsons, Darcys, Smiths, Grants, and Wests of our club to show the younger guys the value of giving their career to one club. There is way too much selfishness going around in the AFL, young kids need to learn how to serve and give to a club, not take from it. With five such strong examples to follow, perhaps our young guns won't go running off when another club waves a check their way.

Face it, we may never have large sums of cash to hand players, but we have tradition, spirit. Trading Rohan only decreases the example of loyalty our young guns can follow. Simply put, we need him in and around the club as an example for others to follow.

Someone said, trade Smith if the deal is right, think of the future. But what future do we have to look forward to is our club continues to breed the Judas/Wallet tradition of greed and taking as much money as you can get? What future do we have when the Cooneys, Faulkners, Rays, and Harris's around our club start chasing the big bucks?

Rohan Smith loves this club and cannot be traded. Think of the future.

Two more seasons of Smith setting example is better than say a 1st round draft pick?

What if you are passing up the chance for a gun kid with great character who will be able to set an example at the club for 15 years?
