I mean a week b/w games should still be long enough to recover, always think Shaka Hislop should have done better with Gerrard's goal though.
You were unlucky that game. Not sure there was much Hislop could have done with that Gerard thunderblast though.

Managers usually rest players ahead of massive games though even if there’s a week between games, mainly due to the threat of injury. I was slightly surprised he played a full strength side when there was zero on it for West Ham

Iniesta might not even agree with you.

I guess if it's got a picture of him with his name it must be true.

You taking the piss with this?

No, it was an honest mistake. But I am sure that you and Cruyff checked the validity of the quote considering Scholes has been praised as one of the best midfielders by plenty of the worlds best footballers when he played, though.

Lmao. This “quote” has done the rounds multiple times before, pal. It is hardly convincing though. I would’ve thought the dead giveaway was that the best day of his life was watching Paul Scholes highlights and not the birth of his son 😂

Not much of a stretch tbf. :D

This has got me thinking as to who do people consider the best English players they’ve seen during their time following football? Who do you consider world class or there abouts?

Paul Scholes, whilst we are on the subject. Such an incredible footballer.

Yeah he’s up there.

For me pre-PL era Robson, Hoddle, Lineker, Barnes and Gazza. Honourable mention Le Tissier

PL era
Scholes - no arguments
Beckham - overrated for the attention he received but then became underrated because perversely people thinking he was overrated
Owen - for a few years before injuries wrecked him
Terry - immense
Ferdinand - ditto
Gerrard - no arguments either
Rooney - maybe never totally lived up to his potential though?
Ashley Cole - arguably best full back of his era
Lampard - maybe or maybe not belongs on list?
Kane

Campbell needs to be there, probably Tony Adams too.

Sterling will definitely be on the list too by the time he's retired.

Lampard definitely belongs on the list. Agree that Beckham ended up being underrated because of his image, he was a serious footballer. Pretty harsh on Rooney too, he is United’s highest ever scorer.

Shearer definitely belongs on that list from the premier league era.

There’s a group of young players well on their way to getting to that level like Sterling, Sancho and Alexander-Arnold

Lol how could I forget Shearer

What about Sol Campbell?
I actually believe of an all time PL XI, the centre back positions are the hardest to select.

Terry, Rio, Campbell, King, Adams, Bruce, Pallister, Carragher - and they're just the English guys. When you throw in Vidic, Desailly, Carvalho, Stam, Kompany it really is the hardest position to pick IMO.

You look back at that golden generation and it still has the best English players I've seen.

Seaman ahead of Hart and James.

Neville, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole - does anyone in the past 30 years come close in any of the defensive positions?

Midfield, I can't think of too many English players better than the likes of Scholes Gerrard, Lampard. Not many great wingers though, would someone like Sterling fit in ahead of the likes of Cole?

Upfront, you'd look at Shearer, Cole, Rooney, Kane.

Probably missed a heap, but it's been slim pickings for the past few years.

2006 was the big missed opportunity. Other than Rooney who was clearly not fit all the big guns went to that World Cup and in truth they never performed nearly to their true ability. All the other tournaments in that decade there were big injuries like having to play Danny ****ing Mills at RB in 2002 and Beckham clearly not fit either un that tournament.

Slim pickings indeed since 2012 but there’s definitely a new group starting to emerge now

Impossible to call it really. Wouldn’t rate Pallister or even Bruce anywhere near those names though, and sorry but Tony Adams was about as clumsy a footballer as I’ve seen. Brilliant captain, great in the air and clearing his lines, but with the ball at his feet he was Lol worthy

Hard to believe they let a manager like Sven take squads of that quality to two world cups. What could’ve been.

Winning that match 5-1 in Munich was one of the worst things that could have happened in retrospect. It made not only the FA but everyone else believe the man was a world class manager. In truth he was a weak, bumbling idiot. The suits at the FA are the main reason why the English National team has so overwhelmingly underachieved. You can go right back to the days when they passed on Brian Clough

That must have been very hard for you.
To type his name and not get the urge to scream campaigner from the top of your voice, alarming the neighbours.
