I thought j howe was going to be a jesse white style talent tease. As soon as they moved him back it was painfully apparent he should stay there.

Underestimated - I was not much of a fan of Maynard in his early career. Tended to overkick the ball.

Overestimated - Dawes before he developed his 'flat/wood hands'. Still think Kyle Martin was simply a matter of application. He's still killing it in suburban football. Kayle Kirby and Liam Jurrah both had the talent but not the application

Didn't Kayle Kirby retire at 19 because of a heart condition? Not sure he fits your description of him

Leigh Brown is the one that sticks out for me.
Until 2010/2011 I thought he was absolutely useless.
He turned it on and then retired early!
Part of Micks demolition plan before he handed over to Bucks.

Never liked Maxwell either, thought it was the wrong option for captain.
The captaincy seemed to supercharge his skill and ability, like SuperCoach double points!

I didn’t think J Daicos was going to set the world on fire either. But he is shaping up pretty well (injury this year didn’t help)

I am still not convinced about Daicos. He had one good season then has plateaued. I hope his brother coming to the club spurs him on to greater heights.

Yes, it was attributed to that. I understand he had health issues.
But he carried 5kg extra around his entire short career too.
Sure, but he was a kid. Many heavily-built teen players carry around a bit of puppy fat until their early 20s

If I am thinking of the same kick, I think Daics pulled that off too, shaped up like a snap, but span and flew fairly straightish. He could tumble them (I.e. spinning forward) and punt them (spinning backwards) and flat punt them too.
I think we're talking the same kick. Everyone else would would do a drop punt or snap that goes right to left and makes a goal from the boundary almost impossible unless there was noone there and you could bounce it through. Daicos used to be able to get that drop punt to go straight and could thread the eye of the needle for a goal. Athos could go a step further and open up the angle with a drop punt that went left to right.

Damian Houlihan kicked three goals with his first three kicks and was playing full forward at 19 years old. I thought he was going to be a star after he got a few seasons under his belt.

Chris Egan: seemed to have all the attributes: agile, quick, beautiful kick I thought he was going to be a gun.

Josh Fraser: He was a good player But when we drafted him I thought he was going to be a great player.

I thought I would never, ever be able to spell Prestigiacomo.
Now it's second nature.:thumbsu:

Josh Fraser was a star.
He played an athletic ruck role in the days when the opposition ruck could pound you to a pulp in front of the umps. Knees to the back, the groin, punch in the face,
Chop outs from any payer around the ground, and all solo.
Horribly maligned player because he made a few unfavorable comments after he was traded to Gold Coast.

He has just been appointed as Head of the Collingwood Academy scheme.

As good as he was I thought he was going to be unstoppable. I'm glad he's back at the club though. I saw him getting interviewed a while back in his role as Carlton reserves coach and he sounded really accomplished. I remember thinking at the time "WTF is he doing at Carlton? We need him back at Collingwood."

That game for Victoria when he suffered a serious injury showcased Fraser's star-potential to my eyes.

He was born 20 years ahead of his time and would have been a weapon in any modern team today.

Unfortunately, for reasons you've covered well he didn't realise his potential.

I remember during his first year at the club reading an article that mentioned how impressed Buckley was with "Joshua's" commitment and dedication.

It's good to have him back.

L Brown.. snagged a few sausage rolls.. from outside 50.. with his opposite peg. Rare.

Stars who weren't: Troy Lehmann, Tom Davidson (knees gave way twice!), Matthew Lokan (GF and all games in Year 1, gone end of Year 3), Jaxson Barham (25ish disposals on debut with blistering pace, 6 games in total?), Jarrad Blight (huge raps). Add Craig Jacotine to this list

Would never have guessed: Prestigiacomo, Crisp

I had a shameful afternoon at Marvel in 08 where I mercilessly hurled abuse at Maxy from the sidelines. I think we were playing North, or the Dogs. Certainly not my finest hour as a supporter and ended up being well off in terms of my evaluation of him. Sorry Maxwell, you star.

I thought Nathan Murphy was going to be jet after I saw him play his first 2 games....
Pfft!

If we look back across the 02-03 grand finals josh fraser would be our best over the two games.

Compare his 03 stats to Goodes that season and they are very close, theres an argument to say that Fraser's were better. Also was the leading tackler for ruck men by a considerable margin that year.

Its interesting when you compare the first half of his career to the second half, his first half he dominates contested over uncontested possession, but that switches in the second half.

Shane Morwood, I am ashamed to say that I didn't rate him at all. i was pretty feral about his early attempts in the black and white. I was wrong.

I overrated Leigh Walker's knees.

I'm not sure what I thought of Wes Fellowes but I'm pretty sure I was wrong every year

Along with Clement, S. Morwood would have to be one of the silkiest defenders I can remember. I don't recall him setting the world on fire early on though.

Another defender I liked (even if he was an import) was G. Pert. Don't judge me. His knees were shot by the time he came over but still managed a few OK years for us. I was also big wraps on Bradley Plain but he fizzed.

I was so confident about Sean Rusling. what might have been. another Lee Walker-type story i guess.
