It feels so surreal, and so amazing that at the halfway point of the year we don't have to do too much to secure this.

and my Tokyo Yakult Swallows are 7 games clear in Japan baseball too. will try to get to jingu on the weekend to see them play Hiroshima carp. might be dodging rain though. might crack out a freo hat.

The only thing I have to say about that game is if the level of midfield dominance had been reversed we would have won by 12+ goals. The fact we got within a kick and half of them in a third speaks strongly for the sides resilience and defensive organisation.

But those 6 games from now until round 22.....

Tbh didn’t expect to beat Carlton.
Winnable game, missing defenders etc, but they’re a quality mid and fwd.

Is chip kicking footy is riskier than quick transition footy? When chip kicking, ball slowly reaches F50 and rare chance for a goal and mostly ball come back and defence not set up and opposition more likely to score. On the opposite if a team quickly do transition , even if the ball come back due to inaccurate kicking still the defense may be better positioned than the chip kick style as the defense wouldn't have moved forward mush due to quick travel of the ball. And if the kick accurate transitioning team will score.. Geelong learned from 2019 to 2021 mistakes and was rewarded in 2022. Slowly many teams going that path...?

It’s not the turnover that has the defense out of position but the quick transition. Possession footy gives the defense time to set up the zone but the fast break off the turnover undoes all that. The Saints were willing and able to go fast. We weren’t.

I'm thinking there are just a few adjustments that could make a massive difference to our dynamism.

Personnel-wise we can add to our forward-IQ with the addition of Walters (and possibly Sturt, maybe more instinctual though). An in-form O'Driscoll will add to our line-breaking power.

As for the style of play, being more proactive with our attack on the ball, to cut out the excessive flat-footery infecting us on Sunday, will be an easier place to start. You can just do it without much thought. Also the fumbles and dropped marks can be worked on at training quite effectively if they bring it right back to conscious ball focus in basic drills.

Of course, more licence and promoting willingness to get the ball on quicker and forwards will add more zest to the game-plan, without having to revolutionise it.
