Competitions The Sausage Roll: Finals (week one).

Remove this Banner Ad

Please enter your team for week one of The Sausage Roll, a Goal Kicking contest for players participating in the 2018 AFL Finals. Similar to The Pieman, you get to select a team of players who will contribute towards your overall score based on the amount of goals they kick. Each player is given a value which is used to calculate an overall score for that player by multiplying that value by each goal they kick.

The Rules

  • You will select a total of eight players for each week of the AFL Finals. Of those eight players, your top six scorers contribute towards your overall total for that week. You will also be entitled to one captain per week. Your captain will contribute double points.

  • Each player is given a value. That player's value is then multiplied by the amount of total goals kicked to calculate an overall total. I.e. If you select Josh Kennedy (value of 7), and he kicks four goals and three behinds, he will score a total of 28 points (four goals multiplied by his value of seven). Behinds kicked do not contribute towards a player's score.

  • The maximum value any player possesses is 60. Players who possess this value are likely to be defenders who don't spend a lot of time inside their team's forward 50. I.e. you may wish to take the punt on selecting Alex Rance with a value of 60. The odds suggest he is very unlikely to kick a goal, but if he does, the results are extremely rewarding.

  • In week one, you must select a total of four players from the two Qualifying Final matches and a total of four players from the two Elimination Final matches. The Semi Finals and Preliminary Final weeks will work similar, where you must select exactly four players from each of those matches.

  • All player value have been predetermined and set based on a player's likelihood to kick goals. The more likely a player is rated to kick a goal, the lower value he possesses.

  • Player values may change at the beginning of each week. I.e. If Ben Reid (value of 19) plays the majority of the match in defence and fails to kick a goal, it is likely that his value will increase for the following match he plays. Similarly, if you select Shaun Burgoyne (value of 33) and he spends the majority of the match in the forward line and kicks a goal, it is likely his value for the following week will decrease.

  • Even though you select a separate team for each week of the finals, you will be rewarded for good performances if you wish to carry over a player into their following match. If you elect to carry over a player who has decreased in value, you will carry over that player's previous value. I.e. If you select Jack Graham in week one (value of 29), and he kicks three goals like he managed in last year's Grand Final, and also in round 23 of the Home and Away season, this is going to decrease his value (let's assume his value becomes 22). If you elect to carry him over for the following match he plays (whether that be in the Semi Final or Preliminary Final), you will be rewarded by scoring his initial value (29) for every goal he kicks. Anyone else who selects him as a new player will score 22 points for every goal he kicks.

  • There is no limit on the amount of players you can carry over, just as long as you select exactly four players in each Semi Final and Preliminary Final.

  • If you fail to carry over a player whose value has decreased, but wish to select that same player later on in the Finals, unfortunately you will not receive that player's initial value - you will only receive that player's new value.

  • If you elect to select a player you have previously had who has increased in value, you will receive that player's new value. I.e. If you select Daniel Butler in week one (value 19) and his value increases to 20, you will receive 20 points for every goal he kicks.

  • You can elect to nominate your captain as a carry over player, and that player will score double points based on the value at the time you selected him (i.e. at the higher value).

  • At the end of each weekend, results will be posted, where every player's score and every participant's score will be displayed.
Entry
  • Anyone can enter by lodging their team in this thread. Once an entry is lodged you can make changes right up to the start of Round 1. Any number of players can be changed but changes must be done with a new post, not an edit to the original post. Be warned: if you edit your original post the change won't be recognised.

  • You are allowed to change your captain nomination as long as it is done by the advertised start time of the first match and is done in the relevant thread. You must change it with a new post (not an edit to an old post). If your chosen captain is a late withdrawal, you will be given a replacement captain: that will be the player with the lowest value. If two or more players share the lowest value, your automatic captain will be the first player you select.

Default captain: You will be awarded a default captain in a round if you have not nominated one. This will be the player with the lowest value. If two or more players share the lowest value, your default captain will be the first player you select.

Can you make changes to players in your team as long as their game hasn't been played yet? i.e. Can I make a change to one of the EFs tomorrow morning as long as I'm not adding or removing a player from Hawthorn or Richmond?

Anyway, haven't had much time to study the form and I probably won't get it before the first bounce so here goes:

QF
Dustin Martin (R)
Jack Higgins (R)
Jaeger O'Meara (H)
Willi Rioli (WC)

EF
Tom Papley (S)

Good question. I'm thinking once the opening match has started, all teams are locked and changes cannot be made regardless of whether those players you are changing have played or not.

I agree, otherwise you'd be able to change tactics depending on the results of the first game. This could potentially advantage some over others.

The teams for the remaining games will be out before the first game tonight so that should give a window to make changes if required. Still, this might advantage some over others but it's probably the fairest way.

So what happens if one or more players you picked isn't in the teams announced tonight and in the 1-2 hours after you don't get a chance to change? I've got a meeting early this evening. Is there a sub or something?

NB: I picked some fairly likely players so it might not affect me unless they are injured, but it could affect others.

I did think about that, and that's why I have decided on only the top six performing players contributing to your overall score. This allows for more risk, but also provides some security should you have one or two players not play.

When do I get my sausage roll, bit hungry and angry at the moment.
