Just flagging it that our offer to Boyd is not that far off what has been discussed in the papers.

Welcome to the new world!!!

I hear what your saying MS3, but it doesn't make it right, rules and regulations from the AFL will have to come into play or clubs will go down the gurgler, I can understand a club throwing a mil at a proven player in their premiership window (ie Sydney-Buddy) but for a "potential superstar" it could do a lot of damage if things turn pear shape or the player doesn't deliver. Our recruiting last year was good, 3 ready to go players who finished well in our B&F.
To lure Boyd "if" he wanted in would have to be incentive based and not become a messiah type pick up as we have done in the past but I am sure our new recruiting staff are aware of this.

our first rounder next year, that's about all.

Out of contract so its almost where Boyd chooses Boyd goes, they wont lose him for nothing.... give em our first 2 picks early on so they can use them swiftly in poaching someone elses star....

Is that what we are taking to trade negotiations for him next year if he is stays at the Giants?

Maybe the new world but it doesn't stop it from being batshit crazy. What kind of message does that send to the playing group going forward in contract negotiations. Gibbs has bought in and taken unders to stay.

I'd rather sell a vision than a pay cheque. If we can't bring players in under that, then its best we look elsewhere.

Become a destination club and this will happen.

If we have a decent year next year i can see our club becoming more of what you say....

That's the solution but also an upcoming problem for the AFL.

Hawthorn, Collingwood and maybe Geelong have been destination clubs in more recent years and we're finally garnering some appeal about us also, but what for the less affluent clubs?
St.Kilda, Bulldogs, Melbourne and a couple of others have to pay premium to get players to come to them, whilst the likes of Hawthorn have players ready to pay for the privilege of being involved :)
That's the nature of competition I guess but how much harder will the AFL intervene in order to make the competition more even.

I'd love Boyd too but not at $1million for a 9 game 19 year old. No way.

I agree and taking out a couple of hiccups late in the season theres plenty of reason to be positive about the coming season. It's the most cohesive a Carlton unit has played for quite some time. Continue that next year with a stronger squad and it will go a long way toward making that happen.

I agree with you TGR, but that's what it will take to get him over the line.

As a newly drafted player, Boyd is limited in his contract until end of 2015, so yep, 2016 is the starting point for $$'s to start rolling in.

See how he performs at GWS this year.

and we have a shit load of room from 2016

would love Boyd but not at the expense of 2 high quality players because anyway you look at it that's what it would cost as a minimum

Agree, & personally I wouldn't do it, but if we want him, and other clubs are prepared to offer him that kind of contract, our contract offer needs to be somewhere near that!!!

I'm not against big, long term contracts. But lets throw that at the proven talent.

This is the thing isn't it?
No one is doubting that Boyd will become a good player but to pay him Buddy money from the get-go, is crazy.

Imagine if the Dogs signed him, saw little reward in the first few years just for him to request a trade three years later, as he started to hit form when 22-23.
