archer obviously number 1
then carey
micky

i dont think any player could come out better off after a clash with duck

Arch has stated that he has seen Carey Fight, and that he would come off second best

This would be a very hard question to answer considering im only a young bloke and wouldnt be able to show respect to the many shinboners that have gone before us.

What do we define as tough?

Could be the ability to endure hardship.

Schimmas effort in that 85 final could be seen as 1 of the toughest efforts on the footy.

definitely arch, carey and mick martyn id be 3 of the toughest players ive seen put on the north jumper. pratty is forging a good reputation for himself.

We had some tough players in the good old days when we weren't much of a team, or so I'm told. Possibly they were tough and rugged and rough and not much else.

Anyway since the Barassi era two of the toughest players I saw (skilful yet courageous and uncompromising) were Schimma and Graeme Melrose.

Arch ain't half bad either.

1. Shane Clayton/Leigh Brown/Matty Cambell

Followed by Arch

then Carey and good old Micky Martin lol

and what are people's opinions of Leigh Colbert?

Leigh Colbert was one of the most courageous and toughest players to wear the royal blue and white.

My old man said the Peter Steward was bloody tough.

Yes the reputation of the NMFC in the 1930s of a group of players who would just as soon belt the living bejeevus out of visitors to Arden St as play a game of football suggests that these recent tough guys are mere amateurs.

thats spot on pharro, thats why i noted the past players who i wasnt fortunate enough to see.

North had a fearsomely tough defence in the late 40s to early 50s. Led by full-back Jock McCorkell, who would give his opponent a whack over the year before the game just to warm up, ably supported by back pocket Pat Kelly--resting ruckmen from the opposition hated playing on him. He once played a match with a broken ankle. Then there was Ted Jarrard, Les Reeves, John Reeves (no relation) and Laurie Icke (Steven's father). Another tough customer was mid fifties ruckman "Mick" Grambeau who would go to give the ball a huge punch and hit his opposing ruckman instead. Early North star Johnny Lewis also had a tough reputation--many opponents including Jack Dyer feared him.

Jim Krakouer .. Plus I keep thinking brent Crosswell or was he all bluff ??

There was no bluff about Tiger. He taught at my school for a while and I noticed a funny thing in him. We'd be playing kick-to-kick on the oval, and Tiger would be doing yard duty. He'd spot the footy, and this kind of thousand-yard-stare expression would come across his face. Sometimes he'd sprint...and hard....a good twenty metres to get to our game. He was mad. Punching school kids in the back of the head while flying for the mark. He just couldn't seem to help it. It was just what he did.

I was actually gonna mention him, but you beat me to it.

Agree on Jimmy, as well. Tough as nails.

Corporal Punishment with a difference.

Back in the 1960's there were a few tough nuts going around if I am not mistaken. In those days I was a Fitzroy supporter however Mantello and Teasdale looked like pretty rugged units to tangle with.

Yes Teasdale would be my pick... before my time but I have this picture of him... one mean looking bastard... of the blokes in my time it would have to be Jimmy... was it Curly Austin that found this out in our Social club after a game Jimmy was not playing in... from what I heard Curly played a little too close to Phil that day... and Jimmy let him know just what he thought about that... :D:D
this was before Michael Long and his be nice to everyone approach... :D:D

I loved Tiger. At the end of the season he would "retire". Then, having missed the entire pre-season he would change his mind at around round 1. He would then do a mini pre-season and be right to go around round 8.

Very rarely got injured once he returned.

He was feared because he had that 'I might do anything' look in his eye.

Anthony Rock never used to flinch.

Arch is obviously the toughest of all time - anyone who says otherwise simply knows nothing about life, or is just a liar
