VFL The VFL Thread Part II - [Wildcard Round (7 v 10) Melbourne v North Melbourne, Sunday 27 Aug, 2.45pm, Casey Fields]

It's interesting in theory yes. But our 3-peat VFL alignment with North Ballarat didn't really translate to much at all.

Critical part is to look at which NMFC players are thriving in the VFL.

At a glance Phillips, Hansen Jr, Bergman and Goater were the North listed players whose performances yesterday offer carryover into our 2024+ senior side.

That was only a partial alignment. Half of our players were listed with North Ballarat and the other half with Tasmania initially, and later, with Werribee. For that reason, North Ballarat had to recruit very good players of their own and that's what formed the backbone of the three-peat, not so much the North Melbourne listed players.

I know but still hoped (expected?) more carryover of such a strong VFL showing from a team that held half our reserves. That said..

..about a 50/50 split between VFL success and some form of future tangible AFL success (below). Have been kind in terms of assessing "future achievements". Went with the assumption of seeing demonstrated success within 5 years of a VFL flag.

The North Melbourne U19s powerhouse that became the Team of the 90s (as you well know) cannot be directly related to the current AFL-VFL setup.

Phillips a no-brainer; Miller Bergmann stiff imo

roos_fanatic08 flew the kite for Sellers to go on the rookie list, which certainly has merit; the other one I really like is Davis - smooth mover

I like Sellers in the VFL but not sure about him for AFL. Kicking dicey and seems a bit undersized/underpowered for the role at that level.
The critique has merit, esp. his set shot which can be flakey. On the other hand, he's a good contested mark and you'd think he'd improve in a full time environment (still only 20, I think?), and we've rookied worse. With exception of Ben Brown, we've seen some good players go from under our nose (Isaac Smith, Michael Barlow.....)

Who's the biased campaigner in charge of Shlong's VFL? Voting his own player BOG in a six goal loss. The cheek of it

Good incentive to attract players to our vfl program too

Sellers is 192cm but shows clear athleticism and overhead marking ability. Proven to be pretty dangerous on the lead too. Puts on pressure for a guy his size.
Think he needs to put on some size and work a bit on his goal kicking action.

Definitely worth a rookie shot in my opinion.

Over on the national draft thread we’re currently discussing the performances of two ~192cm forwards and the idea of picking them 2/17. Reckon Sellers at 20 despite his size might be worth a shot as a rookie in comparison to those two.

Then you take in to account the kid has never been in an elite performance environment before, has heaps of growth left in him I reckon. Would almost go as far as saying he’d have been playing against hawthorn this week had he been on our list.
