It was a shoot out between Jesnon (coming from F3) and an existing test driver. The test driver (forget his name) appeared to have a fraction more pace, but Frank Williams opted for Button because he appeared to be constantly improving, and therefore had greater potential.
Bruno Junqueira

Have you watched Dan ??

Why not give the kid a chance to be something rather than continuing with a guy you know isn't anymore.

We all love Danny Ric, but he's done

I never said Dan wasn't done. I was merely pointing out a) red bulls mixed messaging regarding him and Sergio is laughable (and looks even worse now) and b) Lawson is clearly not the answer.
Lawson racing at the lower levels and his first few races in the RBR clearly show he won't be the saviour they wanted.

Unfortunately Helmut has pet projects and is too stubborn to admit when he's wrong.

If they actually knew how to make decisions properly they could have a better driver like Sainz in the car instead but red bull is too stuffed culturally for that.

He'll probably be slow, like deVries, but I can't see him re-modelling the car as often as deVries did. It was deVries' repair bills, as much as his lack of pace, which saw him dumped mid-season.

That much I agree with. That and helmuts fascination with red bull junior drivers will see Lawson survive a few years in the car but eventually he will go the way of the dodo as he doesn't have top end talent. And they will be wasted years for red bull.

They have to justify having a development program.

You're going to have to clarify further why you don't rate Lawson.

Yes but part of having a junior program is identifying the ones that have elite top level talent and prioritising them and churning the rest. In the past RBR have seemed to be good at this to be fair but lately they are not and Lawson is a good example of it.

I've watched a lot of Liam's junior races and I've never felt that there was any elite level spark in him. Whereas with guys like Norris (as much as he's an insufferable person) and Russell and piastri etc it was more obvious to my eye. Liam is in there because he's a great guy who gets on well with everybody, he has the right backers and Helmut is stubborn and half senile. There's nothing that really suggests Liam is going to make the leap to the top echelon.

I don't think Red Bull would want a Piastri/Norris/Russell type in that second seat.

Heck they didn't even want Sainz rocking the boat. What they want is a consistent driver that never challenges Max but can at least deliver the odd podium/race win and be a factor in strategy. I think Lawson can be that, I think Yuki can be that (except the consistent bit).

They have tried to get Lando multiple times in the past.

They don't want Sainz because Jos and Carlos Snr don't get along

I know and I'm saying their view of what they want is wrong. It's pandering to jos verstappen in the extreme who should be put back in his box anyway.

They should be looking for the best driver they can get partly to challenge Max but inevitably to take over the team when he goes (I can't see him staying that long). Lawson will never get to that level. Sainz will if he has the right car/team.

Absolutely remarkable Hamilton and Russell are tied 685 points apiece leading into the former's last race at Mercedes. Feel like Russell has been the better driver (certainly in qualifying), which is why I would love to see Hamilton pip him at the line
