My intel is that it was a toss up between Brander and Oscar at 13. So when Oscar was still there at 21, like a 19 year old with a hard on, we could not help ourselves having both.

I thought Brander would turn into our CHB and Oscar our CHF.

So in a perfect world, Oscar Kelly and Ryan with our first 3 picks would have made a serious change in future list management. Kelly may have also added to our 2018 strength.

Here’s the but. I did not see the immediate impact that both Kelly and Ryan would bring. If we are honest, I believe very few saw Tim doing in 2018 what he did when arriving at the Cattery. I suspect we had drafting regrets with Kelly which is why it became more emotive in getting him to the club and we paid overs.

I think the other part to the trade was that we offered big $$$ for Kelly. Having done that, the draft capital to get him was probably aligned. I suspect Kelly taken at 21 would not have seen such a high salary in 2020 etc and we would be seeing a $500k to $600k at there about player and not a $750k to $800k player.

Our big dollar pointy end signings in 2018/19 of Guv, Kelly and Gaff are starting to bite us.

Oh well, the Brander draft decision opens up so many could have been scenarios

Question for posters- would you have wanted
1) Brander at 13, Allen at 21 and Ryan at 26
Or
2) Brander at 13, Kelly at 21 and Ryan at 26?

Without Oscar, would Brander have been given more opportunities?

Pre-draft talk on here was that Kelly would be available at our later picks (32/34) and Ryan even later than that.

#13 Brander, #21 Allen, #26 Kelly, #32 Ryan should have happened if the dick eaters didn't jump in.

Gee, with Darling potentially not playing this year and Oscar Allen injured... Brander would have got a good shot in the forward line this year. I don't necessarily blame WCE for letting him go, because we don't know what sort of offer they put. I think it just highlights how quickly situations can change.

Not with you on that. Wells and SOS were both seen at Fremantle oval watching Kelly so it was very likely that Geelong would take Tim is we passed at 21.

What was common on this board was a hope that we could pull the trigger on Tim and Liam with later picks. I wanted that but reality was that both had other clubs interested

I will park this thread to see if he actually gets a gig in GWS's forward line and if he does whether he kicks any goals. I certainly won't cry over split milk until he actually spills the milk. Premature milk spilling.

Plus I don't like to partake in draft hypotheticals, West Coast still did well in his draft year despite missing out on Kelly. It's not 1997 where we had three picks and didn't pick up Simon Black (local kid) or 5 picks before Adam Goodes. Mind you Chad Fletcher was essentially our 9th pick that year (2nd pick in the rookie draft) plus these two (who could forget these Eagles legends) in Trent Simpson and Todd Nener*.

* I just looked at their pictures and they do not register any bells despite being on the list in 1997 and 1998.

Was he offered a contract before he was delisted? I thought so. After 4 years on the list for limited opportunity in multiple positions I can see why he would look elsewhere, especially with Kennedy signing on for another season. Meanwhile GWS have lost Cameron and Patton in recent years and let Finlayson go.

Please rename: The "We shouldn't have drafted Brander tears thread" .
Thanks.
God, imagine the position we would be in if we took Kelly in place of Brander?
We also could have missed out on Oscar Allen by taking Brander. We are lucky he was still there.

We could have got Allen, Kelly, Ryan, Petch and kept the picks we later used for Kelly trade.

Look the real reason is Brander the boy is a little bit timid/spot cause he wanted to be cuddled Simpson didn’t like he attitude so that’s the mane reason why he went in the end. Been reported in the media.
Now you have had the chance to sober up, would you like to rescind and have another attempt?

People seem to forget that after they were drafted Oscar started training with the backs and Brander started training with the forwards. Oscar's first few games were as a KPD and Brander first few games were as a KPF. Oscar's class shone through despite not being played in his best/preferred position and it quickly became obvious that Oscar > Brander in every way/aspect/position (other than in a Rotham look-a-like contest).

It's easy to blame the coaches / development / positions, the reality is, if he was good enough he would have showed it by now regardless of the positions he played.

Interesting listening to Masto on Backchat talk about the red wing position and how much of a selfless role it is but also how it doesn't suit anyone who won't play the role to help their team. He says you can't park a superstar out there but all the same you want your superstars in the mix.

Brander obviously felt he could contribute more being up around the ball and thought his career was wasting away playing red wing.

Masto embraced it as a way to be in the side, and was highly praised each week within the club for how well he excelled at maintaining team structures.

I reckon the coaches saw it as blooding Brander and pumping games into a talented top pick any way they could, but in reality the role suits someone who is on the cusp in the latter stages of their career and just desperate to keep playing. Or hopefully the role is just straight out scrapped for 2022.
