Projecting forward is always tricky but thats part of the gig. Venables base skill set was rated higher than Sam's. With the move towards disposal quality its not hard to see why that decision was made.

True, but I think the thirst for the physical is too underestimated by out scouts / staff. Add in that long kicking ability... SPP looks like h may be something special.

I'm sure we tried hard to do this but we had very little currency. However I do find it astonishing how we seem to be missing out on getable local talent lately. Menagola and spp are two obvious ones.

dixon big $ to change clubs
boak , Hartlett , Gray, wingard and wines big $
Trengove , Westhoff , pittard and Ebert out of contract we could persuade Spp home with a good offer.

We will be shedding Emac and lecras big contracts at years end . Priddis and Mitchell won't be around after 2018 when pepper is OOC .

Geez hopefully the decision to overlook Menegola when he was originally rookie drafted by Hawthorn in 2010, after Hawthorn delisted him in 2011, after Freo delisted him in 2014 and when he got through to the last half dozen picks in 2015 doesn't come back to bite us. I'm happy to back in our recruiting staff, DV has only played 4 limited games after missing nearly a year with a foot injury. I'm glad SPP is doing well, but its only 2 rounds in to what should be 10+ year careers. It's way too early to tell who the better pick will be.

I'll back DV in for a few years before I'll get upset about that. SPP will obviously be great, and was always going to be in the Ollie Wines mould of being ready to go straight away, but he and DV can't be compared yet.

No- its just a matter of comparison of perceived talent. Venables' skill set was judged higher than SPP taking into account all that both offer.

Yeah menagola would have been great as a rookie. Did well again yesterday which continues his good start at Geelong.i guess you guys prefer selections like Lucas? In all seriousness I was just trying to think of the two more recent examples menagola probably not the best example but still an oversight imo as would be a handy rookie at least.

Never had any technical problems with his kicking. Was just a pace above everyone else and tried to do too much by himself. Only player i'd obviously have had ahead of him at draft day was Tim Toranto.

But i can't speak for DV yet.
