Going to the local primary school we used to walk or cycle there, as did almost all of my mates (in before 4 Yorkshiremen). Maybe they did and I didn't notice but I don't remember many parents gathering around gates or kids getting picked up.
There is absolutely no question that the culture toward kids getting to and from school has changed dramatically.

We didnt even have a drop off zone or process for primary or high school (i finished year 12 in 04), you could probably count on both hands the kids that got picked up, now you can probably count on both hands the kids who get their own way to school (especially primary).

Mine was a 5 minute hoof to the bus stop if I wanted to get home early or a 10 minute walk if I didnt mind the later bus

There were times when I spent my bus money on lunch and walked the whole way home in 30-35 minutes

Kids have it too easy now getting picked up and dropped off

I used to walk to school. Up hill both ways!
Never ever got driven (tbf it was the horse and buggy era 😛). Mum walked us to school and waited outside at home time, for the first couple of years. She later found a couple of kids in the next street a year or so older than me and arranged for me to walk with them. Thanks Mum, my first experience of being bullied.

Anyway, we moved house and schools in Year 3 and I and my siblings continued to walk, in all weathers. In secondary school there were long walks as well as trams and buses. No lollipop ladies at crossings, no speed bumps or 40kph zones.

I was 6 years old and catching a bus with my 7 year old sister. Not a school bus, a public one. Which seems absolutely neglectful now!

As soon as school was finished, we were on our bikes all over the place. Parents never minded or worried where we wear

A lot has changed in 20-25 years

Mixture of kids not wanting to but I wonder if parents would even let kids disappear like that any more?

I doubt it, even my mates are a bit helicopter parent like which surprises me having known them 20 years!

I maintain it is absolutely less dangerous now than 20 years ago...

I think its more the latter than the former, kids still love getting away from their folks at a certain age.

Im not sure it is less dangerous TBH. I suspect its about the same, it seems safer because of tech but that same tech also presents a totally new opportunity for predators. Traffic and driving is worse etc.

So many fads… so many neurotic beliefs.

I love driving barefoot. Yet so many on here will be 😱. Barefoot gives so much better feedback. With the shoes, the feedback from the foot controls are lessened. So much tougher if you have safety boots on.

Always annoyed me how Optus Oval (Princes Park) roof doesn't meet flush.

Surely you can plan that to join
It was probably deliberate. The rest of that right-hand section looks irregular too. A boring straight line is broken up. There would be some aesthetic reasoning for the contrasting styles. It made you (and no doubt many others) notice it.

Or, the work experience kid drew the plan 😉

We're a 10 min walk from the school and I've never driven to pick my son up, a bit of it is not to be lazy but also it's an absolute shitfight at that time of day, cars everywhere. I reckon by grade 5 he can probably walk by himself, probably could now I guess.

Yeah, that's probably about the right age. I'm the same with a 10 minute walk to school. My boys are grade 4 and 6 and walk home.

Makes you think how often you walked those routes or took the bus

High school (another town) bus return trip would be over a thousand. The good thing is parents left shortly after and drove the same route anyway so occasionally missing the bus was no biggie.

Primary (in my town) was mostly within walking distance (save one year taking the bus), so about another thousand walks there and back. Lot of paths, back streets, dead-end town, fairly safe compared to a more urban highway area.

I had to put out the washing before leaving (primary, when tall enough) and take it off when I got back (high)
