#5 - West Coast Wonders
Next cab off the rank is the Season 35 runner ups, the West Coast Wonders. The Wonders have crept up the rankings off the back of a sensational season on field, as they move into 5th position after a 6 placed finish at the end of the S35 home and away season.
After a strong regular season, the Wonders outperformed expectations in the final series that ensued, as they knocked off the minor premiers in a Prelim to earn a berth in the decider against a rampant Old Boys outfit who ultimately proved too good on the day. Now the Wonders list strength did improve over Season 35, with the league's third best set of brothers MayTheNorthBeWithU & HARPSichord really coming into their own and Grand Uncle Horace enjoying his highest rating season since joining the competition with a 15th placed finished in the beez.
But there are signs of an underlying tension within the squad as cracks appeared late in the season that became distinctly apparent during the off season, as not one (1) but two (2) of the club's co-captains from the preceding two seasons have sought free agency moves, as S34 co-captain Brenton Davy, and S35 co-captain Frothies Mcveigh made moves to the Royals and Furies respectively. With a succession of club leaders leaving for greener pastures one can only wonder at what might have brought formerly engaged and committed Wonders to cut and run. To lose a leader as a once off is one thing... losing two is a trend and an area of concern that the powerbrokers at the Colosseum would want to arrest, pronto.

So as we touched on, two former skippers in Frothies Mcveigh & Brenton Davy exit the Colosseum at once, along with a handful of inactives as the Wonders have turned over a fifth of their list this past off season. Both losses will be keenly felt as they have both added a distinct flavour to the Wonders in their time at the club and gave the West Coast outfit an important point of difference from their long in the tooth core.
Speaking of different flavours, they've gone some way to addressing that need for a bit of variety by surprisingly luring eccentric former Gumbies skipper and faux retiree DenieD back to the league and to the Colosseum in a low risk/high reward situation. In that there's a low risk he'll stick around, but if he does they'll be rewarded with a stream of ramblings of the ilk suggesting the author is clearly high on something... let's just go with 'life' for the purposes of this critique. But in all seriousness, Dennie at his best could be a major boon for damicky's mob if it pays off.
They also welcome back a long dormant club champ in Marklar_33 and have rediscovered former Furies inactive Carson Dial for another crack at the big leagues, but at best the off season has been a breakeven tending towards a net loss given that leadership walking out the door.
Another interesting development worth noting has been HARPSichord stepping up to become the third co-captain to damicky in three (3) seasons. A good move given HARP's engagement since his return, and in his previous guise appeared to be quite the mover and shaker so if he can avoid the captain's curse he will offer a lot in the leadership ranks the algorithm suggests.
On field, the Wonders were in scintillating form late in Season 35, as they enjoyed 8 wins from their last 10 home and away games to storm into finals with a 10 win, six loss record from 16 games to secure the double chance thanks to their superior percentage as they finished second behind the minor premiers, the white hot Warriors.
And so it would come to pass they would meet the Warriors in the prelim and in the upset of the season the Wonders comfortably secured their place in the season's decider courtesy a 31 point victory over Coney Island at the Colosseum, as they would face off against the miraculously lucky Old Boys.
Speaking of luck, the Old Boys would go on to achieve much needed legitimacy at the expense of the Wonders with an outrageous 3 point victory in their very first Grand Final appearance in just their second season in the competition. If only the league's sim dept had displayed the same level of integrity the last time this happened to an expansion side, but I digress.
Over to the individual stuff, and the club fared just as well in Season 35, as emerging leader Cubs2Lions enjoyed a fruitful season in the engine room resulting in a 5th placed finish in the Mobbs Medal, joined by outgoing skipper and spearhead Frothies Mcveigh as the Wonders secured two top 10 finishers, a hallmark of their superb S35. In fact Frothies would also be rewarded with an All-SFA berth in the forward line for his troubles, his first in an incredible 21 seasons after most recently earning a blazer back in S14, as he joined fellow skipper damicky as the two representatives for the Wonders in the S35 All-SFA side... a mark of their selfless leadership. Still on Frothies, he would finish third in the Fred Medal race overall with a whopping 62 goals as he led the Wonders' charge to the finals.
MayTheNorthBeWithU brought the sole piece of silverware to the West Coast in Season 35 with his surprise win in the EKA Medal, a sign of things to come for the emerging new Wonders as he looks set to ply his trade at the Colosseum for seasons to come. As a club they fared reasonably well in the beez Trophy at season's end, with Grand Uncle Horace and skipper damicky securing two top 20 beez finishers.
So overall, a kick the other way and it almost couldn't have got any better for the Wonders in season 35, and so they rightfully find themselves at the pointy end of the power rankings as a result. But with some unease at the top and it all to do again on field in Season 36 the Wonders will be an interesting watch in the power stakes and the algorithm eagerly awaits.

And so we arrive at the top four, with yet another club on the rise. The Gold City Royals move up three places into 4th place in the Season 36 TiFmedia Power Rankings coming off the back of a stellar season where they uncovered a promising young talent and somehow managed to go some way to covering the loss of arguably the competition's greatest ever player with some handy acquisitions finding their feet at the Golden Throne in S35.
The Royals earned the double chance in the S35 Finals Series as they finished fourth for the second season running off the back of a barnstorming back half of the season and earned the week off after dispatching the minor premier Warriors by 4 points on their own deck for the second time in 3 matches, having also eerily won by 4 points in Rd 16 at home. However the week off halted their momentum in the end as they were bundled out of finals at home, missing out their first chance to return to the Grand Final since their all conquering S30 flag courtesy of an Old Boys outfit who appeared destined for the premiership and ultimately saluted.
However, they sit precariously at the top end of the rankings early in Season 36, as their talismanic skipper nahnah appears to be serving an undisclosed club suspension of some description (or a holiday IRL) and their early season form has certainly failed to capture the imagine thus far, with just a single win from their first four matches. Another to watch closely over the coming weeks as they look to consolidate their standings in Season 36 TiFmedia Power Rankings.

Having lost a plethora of experience and high end talent at the end of Season 34, including not just one but two former admins in The Filth Wizard & boncer34 in addition to a third HOFer and another S30 premiership hero, spookism. Add that to EKA winner and former admin candidate PMBangers and that's more talent out the door than most clubs could bear. Yet coming back the other way was renowned mercenary and gun for hire Cadsky, a man who harbours his own ambitions on administration and hotchilli, an up and comer from the Roys with a lot to offer and the perfect opportunity presented itself at the Golden Throne. Both gents would find their feet well in Gold City, and ably supported skippers nahnah & CakeEater with the unenviable task of rebuilding and rejuvenating a list suddenly in flux.
So after a season of consolidation in Season 35, the Royals have managed to retain the bulk of their list over the off season, with just a smattering of delistings as they continue to slowly turn over the list. In one of the more surprising moves of the off season, former Wonders co-captain Brenton Davy makes the move to the Golden Throne to reunite with former West Coast mentor Cadsky having formed a solid partnership in their previous stint together at the Colosseum. BD brings a different edge to the Royals better known for sharp wit and quips, and should complement the building list nicely as he has sought greener pastures to revitalise his Sweet FA career. With the people's EKA winner Membling, the aforementioned hotchilli, an up and about Cadsky and the old guard of your GreyCrow, CakeEater and Smartys Power types just to name a few... not to mention having megastars like Blacky & brahj ripe for the odd cameo, the Royals have developed a nicely rounded, eclectic mix of players who will ensure they retain a certain vibe that has long settled in at Gold City since the fumbler days.
But the cream on top is most definitely an up and firing nahnah, and the league watches on with intrigue as to whether the Royals heart and soul leader recaptures the form of recent seasons and continues to drive the new Royals forward on their current trajectory and locking themselves a spot in the Season 36 TiFmedia Power Rankings top four.
As we've already touched on, the Royals enjoyed a superb Season 35, as they would register a 10 win, 6 loss season and a top four finish. The season was set up with a 5 game winning streak between rounds 7-12, as not even the bye in the middle of their run could halt their momentum as they entered Rd 13 with an 8-3 record after 11 games and the double chance was well and truly up for grabs, and they took it with both hands. But it wasn't to be, as they would fall at home to the Old Boys by 12 points in a thriller at the Golden Throne in the Prelim Final as their season drew to a disappointing close after promising so much more.
From an individual perspective, the Royals enjoyed the equal most selections of any club in the S35 All-SFA side, as recruit hotchilli, veteran GreyCrow & co-captain nahnah all earned selections in what was an impressive haul for the club. Skipper nahnah would also fare extremely well in the Fred Medal, as he finished fourth overall with 60 majors to his name to lead the Royals attack with aplomb. Fellow skipper CakeEater also got in on the act with an equally impressive 3rd place finish in the Mobbs Medal with Cadsky also managing a top 20 finish in his first season back at the club. Add to that Membling's disappointing yet promising runner up finish in the EKA Medal and S35 was a successful one both on and off the field for the Royals as they even managed two top 20 finishers in the beez Trophy with Cadsky & nahnah both featuring heavily in the votes.
And yet there is still so much unknown about where the season will take the Royals in Season 36, as they certainly have some work to do to arrest their early poor form on the field, while looking to maintain their strong form off it as they look to go at least one better in S36.

In what may come as a surprise to some, we find reigning Premiers the Ophidian Old Boys coming in at 3rd place in the Season 36 TiFmedia Power Rankings, having slid two places from the top of the heap at the end of Season 35. An historic S35 saw the Old Boys claim a maiden flag in their very first Grand Final appearance and just their second season in the competition after successfully winning admittance to the league ahead of Season 34.
It couldn't have looked much more unlikely at the halfway mark of the season. After 11 rounds, the Old Boys found themselves sitting outside of the eight with a 4-7 record and outside odds to make the finals at all. However they would fail to lose another game in Season 35 as they went on a 9 game winning streak that peaked with a famous 3 point victory over the West Coast Wonders to win the Season 35 Premiership. They did it the hard way too, their 6th placed finish ensuring they would have to tackle two top four sides away from home to win through to the decider and the rest was history.
However since that momentous occasion, things have soured to some extent down at Spotswood. Established stars have left, they've found themselves perilously close to minimum squad numbers at deadline, a key player sensationally walked out on the club and their skipper Tigerturbulance & the club itself were heavily reprimanded seeing the club court controversy amid some significant turmoil... and that was just in Round 1!!

But Ligma on the other hand did not go quietly, as a storm of controversy enveloped the club with barbs thrown from both sides as the Old Boys turned on their premiership teammate in what became a quite public & unbecoming spat.
But there would be no greater controversy for the Old Boys in the pre-season of S36 than the bungled signing of fumbler. The Old Boys inexplicably attempted to sign an extremely inactive fumbler, and then proceeded to list him despite the Dragons flagging their intentions to retain their player. There was talk of PMs and commitments being made, as a supposed 'free agency signing' was completed outside of free agency rules and was therefore invalid. Let alone the fact that the Dragons had retained fumbler on their list having listed him in their squad. With a week to go. And yet and still the Old Boys knowingly persisted, deadline came and went and the Ophidians had someone else's player on their list. Now were it not for a courageous committee stepping in and righting a clear administrative wrong, they may have even got away with a wet lettuce leaf punishment. But the committee bravely vetoed, and the final outcome as we now know was the Old Boys being stripped of premiership points and skipper Tigerturbulance, who had also signed a 'rookie' erroneously it's worth noting, copped one of the greatest penalties by a skipper in recent memory.
And even after all of that, putting aaaaaaaaall of that aside for a second... the Old Boys still sport one of the strongest lists on paper in the competition. And they're the reigning premiers. And they've been the talk of the town, having dominated the media landscape as a result of their tumultuous start to Season 36. So maybe it ain't so bad down at Spotswood after all.

As we've covered, the 6th placed Old Boys romped home to blitzkrieg the finals series and snatch a famous victory from the jaws of defeat, as they overcame a 12 point deficit at three quarter time in the decider to salute by a paltry 3 points in the end. Having won four straight finals, they well and truly peaked at the right time, but their 9 win, 7 loss record during the home and away season put them in the box seat with a home Elimination Final and they found themselves on the soft side of the draw after that. Outside of the GF, the highlight of the season was no doubt the 64 point drubbing of the Royals at home in Rd 14 coming off the bye that set up their famous run. And the rest as they say is history.
