Not a top 15 pick but 21 and 41 for a 31 year old Brian Lake who was a 2 time AA and WB b&f winner by the time the Hawks got him and who was imo, as good as what Scarlett was, his peak period was just shorter.
He would retire after 3 years at the Hawks a triple premiership player and Norm Smith Medal winner.
He was the missing piece of the puzzle for the Hawks then who were right in the window.
Will Barrass be the same missing piece and are the Hawks as close as they think they are to make him worth it?
You're right - Lake is a similar type of player at a similar stage of his career. You are also right in highlighting that Lake was a significantly better, and more credentialed player than Barass. He was a multiple All Australian compared to Barass' 0.
What you're missing from that trade is that Hawthron got pick 27 back with Lake. So a much better player was traded for a pick swap in the 20s and a late pick. That's the market value of late career players.
Yet West Coast fans are trying to tell us that a top 15 pick and extras is lowballing for Barass. Your example perfectly illustrates my point.
The next most similar type of player traded was Aliir Aliir. But he was only 26 at the time. And he went for a 2nd rounder.
There is no way the Hawthorn offer was lowballing.
