Speculation Tom Barrass [UFA 2027, reportedly headed to Hawthorn]

A rough outline of the deal would have been agreed upon between the clubs for a while now.

Eagles and Hawks have had a month to work it out.

Just going to be a bit of posturing from both clubs regarding the steak knives.

Expect it to be done sooner rather than later but probably not until later this week.

13 is overs for barrass. 30 next year, never been AA and has publicly stated his back is rooted.

I dont think its overs given he is contracted. But the 2 x 1sts feels insane. West Coast apparently also after a GCS player as well as Baker so maybe they will need to get this deal done fairly quick.

Though GCS may give away the player and a 1st round pick for a 2nd round pick.

Just saying 2 firsts is disingenuous, not all firsts are equal. As it stands it's pick 14 or 15 and every chance it's thereabouts if not later next season. If it was a top 10 pick it would be a different story, but you'll be getting one of the best KPD in the game in his prime, under contract, so 2 mid teens picks is more than fair. If he didn't play alongside Mcgovern and had a couple less untimely minor injuries he'd probably have a couple of AA jackets by now, and at times over the last couple of seasons has performed better than Mcgovern.

Being better than a guy likely to retire in the next year or 2 should be expected.

Wait, GCS player? Haven’t heard about that?

Was in amongst the many tidbits of yesterday, including GCS willing to pay a 1st round pick for Noble who played VFL for most of the year and wouldnt get a game if the Pies had no injuries.

Everything involving GCS is just a shit show.

You mean the guy who just won AA and our b&f ?
It's the Victorian bubble, the reason they apparently don't think Barrass is much chop is the same as why they don't realise McGovern has possibly been the best backman of the past decade... they don't watch enough of us and the Vic media don't talk enough about us.

See also Matthew Pavlich, in the mix for top 10 player of the century but most Victorians wouldn't know it.

You lot really do like assuming the victim position dont you?

McGovern is a fine backman, I would not have him as the best, but he is in the ballpark.
Pav is an all time great, like some only let down by lack of team success. He was an elite champion of the game.

There ya go.

The word "generational" gets thrown around way too often, but with McGovern it's entirely accurate.
If you think he's anything outside the top 2 kpds of the last 15 years then you havent watched him. If you think he's not #1 then you are a biased, the only other one in the conversation even is Rance.

I think the point was regarding comments that Barrass has been better the last few years. Whilst true doesn't mean he is better than a generational talent. He has been better than a player in the backend of his career whilst in his prime, which should be the case with top end players.

There is a bit of chest beating going on regarding Barrass it's edging closer to some overeating him rather than underrating. I think everyone thinks he is a very good player.

Barrass is in the top half dozen KPDs in the comp, thats no chest beating, that's just how it is. You can think what you want but you and most hawks fans are underrating him.

Yes Eagles fans are talking him up a bit, but the top half dozen kpds thing is accurate.

I disagree, at best it's been a bit from both sides at worst it's BF at its finest with people picking a side and only focusing on that. I absolutely don't underrate him. You can agree he is in the top half dozen which is a big pro and also mention the negatives that surround him such as his age and back injuries.

Both are correct.

This is rubbish, every footy fan knows Mcgovern is in the discussion for best defenders of the past decade.

Anytime anyone ever disagrees with any valuation of a West Australian player some of you will just cry Vic...

Of all the players to claim are underrated due to Vic bias McGovern is the last person to be mentioned, he gets his credit.

Scarlett exists and is rightfully in that discussion.

McGovern hadn't played a game when Scarlett retired and Rance was a meme player then more known for catastrophic turnovers than his elite defensive work.
