Assuming it's true - well done to Tommy.

Great player, leader and representative of our club. Has been an important part of the greatest era we've seen.

Smart ass:D

Presser today at around noon.

It's the right call. Well done Tommy, always the team man.

Re: Harley to retire today

Just read this on the Hun. Congratulations to Tom on his career, being the captain that brought us out of the doldrums to be a dual premiership winning club. His leadership I believe was integral to the rise of Geelong, especially in terms of improving the off-field discipline of some of our errant stars. Ultimately injuries and general wear and tear wrecked his career on an individual level and meant that he could no longer be our CHB, but he has a long and illustrious career ahead of him in management/media. All the best Tommy, you will be missed!

This captured my sentiments exactly. Great clubman and leader. Would love to see him play on, but I think the on-going niggling injuries were a sign he could not make it through another full pre-season/season and fairly remain in our best 22 on the basis of skill.

Have the utmost admiration for Tom as a leader and you can clearly see how respected he is by his peers and the footballing community.

Great way to go out, as the reigning premiership captain, and captain of one of the greatest teams of all.

Tom Harley Appreciation Thread.....

So its reported that he is going to announce he going to retire,So myself just like many other supports would like to thank him very much for what he has done for the club, thank you for being such a great leader who is under rated by so many & thank you so much for bringing us 2 premierships in 3 seasons :D, i dont think the team would have become what it has if it wasnt for his leadership..........Your going to be missed :(.

Re: Tom Harley Appreciation Thread.....

Well done Tom - love your work :thumbsu::thumbsu:

In other news, at least we now don't have to put up with martyk and CatFan79 rubbishing our captain anymore. A refreshing change :thumbsu:

Re: Tom Harley Appreciation Thread.....

Thanks for everything, Tom.

One of the only redeeming things about Robert Walls is that he signed up for a Geelong membership in 2004 after hearing Tom's frank interview on the radio after we were humiliated by Carlton in round 2. Walls paid up on the basis of what a fine leader in waiting Tom was.

He is a wonderful person, a wonderful leader and a dual premiership captain. I wish him success in whatever path he chooses to take.

Re: Harley to retire today

Well done and congratulations to Harley on a great career from a Lions supporter. All the best in the next chapter in your life.

Re: Harley to retire today

What a contribution he has made to this club. He will be missed. He was a key factor in turning this club around and that will never be forgotten. What he has done will leave a huge inprint for the club going forward. His last game was captain of a premiership side, what a way to go.

Thanks Tom.

Re: Tom Harley Appreciation Thread.....

Congratulations Tom on a sensational career. I don't think anyone has done more for the GFC than you in my lifetime.

Best of luck for the future.

PS - You were robbed of AA in 2004.

Re: Harley to retire today

Well played Skipper.

It's been a pleasure watching you play and listening to you speak as the face and captain of this great club.

All the best for the future to our 2 time premiership captain

Re: Harley to retire today

Thanks Tom!

Wore the number 2. 2 games needed to make 200. 2 Premierships.

Nothing but respect for the guy. We will hopefully see plenty of him in the years to come.

Re: Harley to retire today

I FEEL SO PROUD(!) that Tom has been our captain.

Never had any doubt that he would do the right thing by the club.

Just hope and pray that somewhere in the future he takes up an off field role at the club.

It seems that he'll be in Sydney now, but clubs will be clambering to to get him on board in some capacity.

Re: Harley to retire today

Sad to see him go, but forever will be remembered as the captain that changed the GFC from a good team to a great team. :thumbsu:

All the best for the future Tom!

A failing body has prompted Geelong captain Tom Harley to announce his retirement from AFL football after 198 games - and two premierships. Seated alongside coach Mark Thompson and flanked by the 2007 and 2009 AFL premiership cups, the 31-year-old told a media conference at Skilled Stadium on Thursday that he was immensely proud of his decade-long contribution to the Cats. "I physically can't meet the requirements to play, to see out a season, a full season in the AFL," said Harley.
