SORE KNEE: Captain Tom Harley will be rested from tomorrow's practice match.

GEELONG captain Tom Harley is struggling to overcome knee soreness, so will again be rested for tomorrow's practice match against Melbourne.
Harley, who also missed last Saturday's NAB Cup semi-final loss to Brisbane, has been left out of the 24-man squad along with star midfielder Gary Ablett, who is recovering from a hip injury sustained during the first quarter of last week's match.

Was he the best possible option for captain? Will he play the majority of games this year? In my opinion a captain should be able to. People predicted when Harley was picked as captain that he would be injured more often than not, and dare I suggest it, are the doomsayers' predictions may be coming true?

Q1 - when he's on the park, yes.
Q2 - yes, I think he'll play majority, but maybe not enough for him to be captain.
I agree, a captain should be out there, week in, week out, reliable.
I love Harls, and I hope his body holds up this year. Otherwise, some of our well-known leadership issues will continue.

I am worried about this. I have a feeling Harls will play less than half this season's games. I want on-field leadership from Harls. And I don't particularly want our VC to get the guernsey when he's not available.

Which makes you wonder why they didn't appoint Chapman in the first place. Nothing against Harley, but you wonder whether speaking well ranks higher than being on the field every week in Thompson's eyes.

If I recall correctly Harley was one of the few if not the only player to put his hand up for the job, and therein lies the problem (lack of leadership amongst the players)

1. Captain - history of injuries past and on going.

2. V-C - more interested in defending his own performances than that of the club.

3. DVC - Suspended 4 times in one year (all time record) Say,s it all.

Personally I would of liked a combination of Rooke and Chapman.

I totally agree with you guys , Even though I think Harley has the best intentions and is outspoken. we still have that same problem as King . He spends too much time off the field. Yes and we dont want Ling.
Who would you put as Cpt , VC and deputy if you had your way.
I would pick Chappy as captain
maybe Milburn as vice
and as depty Cam Mooney

Lets hope he doesnt go the same way as King (in terms of lack of appearances). It was a gambled risk nominating harls as captain. I terms of leadership and willingness to come out and talk to the media, there would only be a couple of guys I think would have been suitible...himself, ling, chapman. He must be held in very high regard down there, despite all his injuries and (in)abililty to take the field, they still went with him over two guys who you would lock in for 20 games for the season. As I've posted previously, I think we are a much better team when we have harls out there. Lets hope he makes a quick and full recovery!

Harley was and still is the outstanding candidate for the captaincy in terms of off-field leadership. On the field he is also oustanding, although not as talented as some of his colleagues. The question always was the trade-off between his injury susceptibility and his otherwise outstanding credentials for the job

Well, at least Harls can captain when he's on field.
I'd be a tad worried if we were stuck with Lingy as El Captain all year. And Moonster as VP would be even scarier. Like a really bad dream.

I think this is something that can be discussed at seasons end. Talking about it now is just all innuendo. At least at seasons end we know how the year turned out with that marvellous thing called hindsight.

It's all well and good to say this as they are both courageous type players, but none of us know anything about them personally. For instance, they could be the two quietest people at the club. Captain needs to be more than just reliable on the field. Same with Bartel and Gaz.

Just give it to Moons for a few years if Harley can't get out enough until Sir Selwood is ready.

Will go up in my reckoning if he takes his turn through the VFL when recovering from injury....*unlike* SK.

Play fit (ie a few niggles are ok) but don't play as a cripple.
