PORT Adelaide defender Tom Jonas has started running and is eyeing a shock return for the round 20 Showdown after knee surgery. The Power’s defensive general on Thursday ran on the club’s Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill just nine days after keyhole surgery on his left knee and was running laps of Adelaide Oval on Saturday morning. It was initially feared Jonas would miss up to six weeks but he’s hoping it’s just four and he will be right to play the Crows in a titanic clash on August 4. “I came through (the surgery) really strong and was lucky at how good I have pulled up from it, so we’ve been able to fast-track the rehab, which has been awesome,” Jonas said. “We’re lucky enough to have the Alter-G machine, so I started on that to take a bit of stress off (the body) before getting out on the track.

Spending time in the coaches box. I would want to upset him in there coaches.

Jonas has been at line and team meetings while he recovers as the Power makes a play for the finals, but he’s yet to take a seat in the coaches’ box. “It’s important to stay connected with the group because you can get a little bit isolated in rehab and maybe check out a bit mentally, so it’s just keeping in touch on the phone and around the club,” he said. “The coaches’ box is pretty full-on and last year was tough to watch, but generally I’m pretty relaxed and try to enjoy watching while taking a few notes. I haven’t spent any time in there yet, Hamish (Hartlett) has been down on the bench, so maybe this week or the week after I’ll be in the box.”

Obligatory wine producers photo now goes with a TJ story

Away from football he’s expanding his business portfolio and on Thursday night launched a new wine label ‘Hey Diddle Wines’ with teammate Brad Ebert “I don’t mind sitting down for a glass of red over a feed and my partner likes getting to cellar doors when we have the opportunity,” Jonas said. “I’m trying to keep myself occupied, bit of personal development set up for life after footy with uni and a couple of businesses. This is more a passion project during the season and we can learn a lot about the industry.”

The mantle of Captain sits well.

Been in our best 3-4 players this year and probably our most consistent player.

So glad he was able to tough out a hard year last year and thrive this season.

Still super underrated and anonymous to the AFL media as well, which will be a shame come All Australian team time.

I was critical of much of his game on the weekend but that was very good.
Yeah outside of that moment he looked very slow.

Our oldies are starting to hurt us in terms of our press.

It was noticeable how much the forward pressure increased with Georgiades and Jones replacing Gray and Motlop.

Yep. I commented in the GD thread that I think Jonas playing makes the rest of the defence worse. They have to cover his increasing inability to stay with his opponent and his general slowness of mind.

That one pressure act was excellent but it doesn't make up for his overall lack of contribution to the system.

Despite his ‘slowness’ and the defence having to cover him, he remains one of the leagues’ best one on one defenders in terms of individual contests and our defence has been best in the league last 7 or so weeks.

He is playing off a shortened preseason and with injuries.

We don’t have a stand out replacement for him as a defender or captain.

Don’t get me wrong, TJ has slowed down and does appear to be nearing the end but he still has plenty to offer on and off the field and I wouldn’t be rushing him out the door any time soon.

Definitely in the underrated category for me. Barely a nice word gets said of him on this board but i think he has been a rock solid for close to a decade now. Nothing flashy at all about him, and a lot of his possessions are grubber kicks but he works his arse off competing as hard as anyone on the ground. He sets a good example as captain.

Jonas tries his guts out but he's too small to play on talls and too slow now to play on smalls.

Him trailing his man to uncontested marks is becoming more common these days.

I am not so sure he is underrated ... After all, he is captain of the club. From rookie list, to 200 gamer (soon), and AFL Captain. That is one hell of a career, & good on him. Certainly has been a rock down back & has got the most out of his career.

But you can sense his time is almost up

Supporters don’t rate him but the club does. Similar to Kane getting 4 b n f’s but half this board still think he was shit.
