You'd still be s**t with him, but it was the giving away of experienced leadership that I think was nuts. Such a smart hard working player. I can't imagine how losing that role model could possibly benefit the Hawks.
As others have mentioned it’s probably in particular to him and Sam & how they may or may not of gotten along.

On field we lost someone short term, long term it’ll benefit us, the lack of leadership I suppose is true but Sam backed in what we had, which could be a bad or good decision who knows.

I would’ve liked to of kept him but so be it, not the end of the world, but he’ll be a great benefit to you.

If it was just Tom, I'd nod along with all of that. I just think Sam has underestimated the significance of experienced mentors in fostering development. It'll be an interesting watch, but I can't see it going well.

There’s a bit of a Luke Ball feel about Tom Mitchell. He’s just the sort of player that can take our team to the next level, just as Ball did back in 2010.Sam Mitchell may have gifted us the flag this year like Ross Lyon did back in 2010 for letting Ball go for nothing.
Don't Forget we got Jolly in the Trade Period that also helped a lot

Tom joins Hawks start of 2017. Sam finishes up at the end of the 2017 year.
Both played the inside role.
Was Sam pushed out by a gun player. Either way I doubt he was happy about it. He seems arrogant to me.

Your years are slightly off. They didn't play together. But Sam and Lewis were definitely pushed out to create cap space for Tom and Jaeger.

I got the results off Google. One off the Hawthorn website.
May be wrong dunno.
Sam finished end of 2017
Tom started 2017.

Except we won't be playing the Hawks in the Grand Final;)

I thought at the time and even more now that was one of the dumbest trades I can remember. He's the exact type of bloke you want around when you're a young team with a greater influx of talented youth coming.

Got rid of O'Meara as well but that fits with their draft strategy over the last couple of years. Really churning the list over, taking a lot of quality through the draft, and building a war chest to target free agency opportunities. They'll struggle this year but I think they'll rebound pretty quickly.

Their captain retired as well and they also got rid of Gunston. I just don't think their players will develop as effectively in a horrible team with a leadership hole.

It’s an interesting strategy. Building a war chest sounds great, but generally the order is;
a) build through the draft with best available
b) top up for specific needs through FA

Unless the drafted talent starts to take them in the right direction up the ladder, history shows that free agents will generally move to good environments and clubs who promise team success. Is that going to be them if the kids are getting smashed?

Not quite as bad as the Dees when they cleared their list. I think Wingard and Breust will follow at the end of this year. I think they've got enough leadership, they just haven't got enough games into their kids yet with about 30 players <50 games. We've still got 24 so that's only a few more than us. Much like ours last year, a few of there's are already establishing themselves as best 22 in the Jiath, Day, Reeves, Newcombe, and Koschitzke types.

I don't mind it. Short term pain for long term gain. They've added high picks in Grainger-Barras, Day, Maginnes, Ward, Butler, Macdonald, Mackenzie, Weddle, Hustwaite, Weddle, traded in Meek, Lynch and Stephens as other long term pieces, got Newcombe in the MSD. Time will tell if they've gotten it right.

It may well be that there’s no viable alternative anyway. Prolonging mediocrity isn’t going to beat out 17 other teams. May as well play a high-variance game.

Feels like they’ve gone too far down the Melbourne early 2010’s route tbh.
I get that Sam is trying to do what Clarkson did with the Hawks back in 05/06 when he pushed a lot of senior players out to promote youth, but he’s destroyed the bulk of the leadership at the club too, whereas Clarko kept guys like Crawford around to lead the young brigade.

Clarko was also doing it in a different environment where he got good value in trade for the blokes they pushed and you got a second top 5 draft pick when you bottomed out.

They also had Collingwood gift them Jordan Lewis because we knew Chris Egan was going to be a better player.
