He has certainly, and very positively, impacted our team performance and dynamic. Absolute gem.
Couldn't agree more - predicted that he could be the recruit of the year prior to the commencement of this season and I haven't seen anything other than some genius from Bobby Hill that has changed my mind. Although Setterfield seems to be mounting a case, hopefully we put that to bed next Tuesday!

Jeez we recruited smartly. Bobby is flying and over the course of his career will probably be the most important of our recruits, but he's third in line in terms of current importance, behind Mitch and Frampton.

Yes, I'm restraining myself from prompting some posters on the Ladder Position board who responded with the LOL emogi when I stated early in the year that in recruiting the likes of Frampton, McStay and Titch, Collingwood had recruited for need - as justification for my lack of confidence in Geelong this year whose recruiting was more based on opportunity - he who laughs last, laughs loudest.

Cats were smart too, but they recruited on longer term need. Needed to get some young talent in. They didn't have the shorter term holes to fill that we had.

The Cat's list holes weren't exposed last year as they banked wins early in the year and this allowed them to adopt a strategic approach to getting players fit for the finals and they had a great run into the finals with injuries. They lack KPP, outside run and a ruck - this has been exposed this year, e.g., playing a clearly unprepared Hawkins, and none of their 2022 recruits are likely to fill these gaps either tactically or strategically (other than their throw at the stumps picks - Foster and Mullin). I'm still not convinced that it's smart for a side that is so deep into the Premiership window to recruit opportunistically the best players they can (regardless of need) when they have an immediate need to fill gaps.

Yeah, could have added kpp depth, but not as high priority as us filling best 22 holes or their need for youth.

Despite not looking strong on paper, I think ruck was a strength of theirs last year due to the way they used Blicavs and Hawkins.

Absolutely - Hawkins is central to their ruck set-up - that's why they've been playing him this year even though he's un-fit. They simply don't have anyone else to play that role - and that's one of the three gaps mentioned where they lack depth - depth not covered as a result of an opportunistic approach to recruiting rather than a tactical approach.

That foot injury has really hurt Hawkins. He has been a magnificent player but needs heaps of running in a pre-season to stay lean. This is getting more so as he gets older. He could put on weight walking past a pie shop. Will find it bloody hard to shed the weight in season whilst playing and being managed. Will be interesting to see if he slims down as the year goes on.

Where I differ is that I think it was tactical. They just had to get in as much talented youth as they could. No idea if they made the right choices, but 4 first round kids like Bruhn, Ollie, Bowes and pick 7 was what they needed to refresh the list for the future.

Understand what you're saying. To me, they just won the premiership by a mile, only minor changes to their list (I acknowledge that losing Selwood was a big loss), adopting a youth policy now is like having an each way bet on a short priced favourite - I'd go all in for a chance to win back to back premierships rather than kick off an opportunistic youth policy at the same time as having a red hot go at the Flag. Good luck to them, they might win both the tactical and strategic battle - for me - I like the approach that the Pies have adopted.

I'd be happy if I was a Cat's fan, but I'm not as into the all in philosophy. They've got the list to win it this year if things go right, so it was a good time to refresh for the future. Refreshing whilst in the hunt for flags beats the hell out of the boom bust cycle that other clubs choose in my mind.

It felt like he was huge in the coalface today. With how good De Goey, Pendles and Daics are going it almost feels like he isn't getting the attention he deserves in the media. I guess the inside game isn't as sexy.

Still just love that he fell into our hands.
