Top 10 Best Players Right Now in 2010

Just out of interest, here's the top 10 players in the league right now ordered by Champion Data Player Ranking averages (minimum 8 games played):

  1. Gary Ablett (Geelong) - 136.2
  2. Brendon Goddard (St Kilda) - 134.8
  3. Luke Hodge (Hawthorn) - 129.6
  4. Chris Judd (Carlton) - 126.1
  5. Paul Chapman (Geelong) - 125.1
  6. Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle) - 119.8
  7. Dane Swan (Collingwood) - 119.7
  8. Michael Barlow (Fremantle) - 116.0
  9. Leigh Montagna (St Kilda) - 114.6
  10. Matt Priddis (West Coast) - 112.9
Everyone's favourite Lenny Hayes is ranked 30th (4th in his team), with an average CDPR score of 101.8.

Despite the CDPR being the best all-round statistical measurement of a player's impact on the game (due to all the factors that go into it), obviously statistics aren't everything, so make of that what you will.

Maybe it's just cos he's so...loveable.

He doesn't have the skill of Goddard, or the silkiness of Dal Santo. But he's a massive presence in the middle and his ability to physically drag the team over the line counts for a lot - not very many SuperCoach points though.

Priddis handballs more, makes you more effective.

Every third kick from Judd is an up-and-under helicopter. Makes you less effective.

In 2009, Priddis had just as good kicking efficiency numbers as players like Simon Black, Scott Thompson (Adelaide), Brett Deledio, Jude Bolton, Steve Johnson, Matthew Pavlich, Cyril Rioli, Matthew Boyd and Brett Kirk, but you barely hear any criticisms of their kicking.

My alternative top 10.

1. Bartel
2. Boyd
3. Gibbs
4. Dal Santo
5. Cross
6. Barlow
7. Ray
8. Watson
9. Priddis
10. Scotland

Watch these players in action.

Every single one an absolute gun.

The way they use the footy meets my approval.

Players like Judd / Ablett don't float my boat.

what are squibs like gibbs, dal santo and ray doing on that list?

Agree with most.

Take out Frankin - no way is he in the top 10 this year.

Montagna out too - had a rubbish start to the year....such short memories people have

Drop in Jimmy Bartel & Jack Riewoldt

Steve Johnson cannot kick a drop punt. He's probably the worst technical kick (never seen Blake kick yet, only watched him 20-odd times) on their side. Kirk can kick about 24m with a tail-wind. (Both of which I guess prove how over-rated kicking can be).

1 - lindsay thomas - superstar say no more
2 - ablett - just behind the mighty roo
3 - jack riewoldt - a man one wrecking ball
4 - ablett - so good i listed him twice
5 - judd - clearance work and footskills sensational
6 - eddie betts - has really broken the downhill skiier sterotype, and token indigenous
7 - cyril - he gets my mom wet
8 - israel folau - so good he dosnt need to play to snag a mention
9 - angus graham - averagin 102 in supercoach, must be doin somethin right
10 - toovey - underrated by many, but not me

those are the top 10 standouts this year for mine, head and shoulders above anyone else

nice to see someone rate jack and goose (graham) in the top ten
good work :thumbsu:

Well you're the first person I've heard openly criticise Steve Johnson's kicking. His kicking efficiency was a lowly 49.0% in 2009 by the way.

The point was that those players I listed are statistically just as poor kicks as Priddis, yet they never cop the same heat for it that he does.

You obviously didn't watch to much Football at the start of the year
Rubbish start to the year? Wow..

Round 1 - 26 touches (Saints Highest), 7 tackles & 5 I50s.
Round 2 - 35 touches (Saints Highest) 1 Goal, 4 tackles, 4 I50s.
Round 3 - 25 touches, 2 Goals, 6 tackles, 5 I50s.
Round 4 - 28 touches, 10 I50s.
Round 5 - 36 touches (Saints Highest), 6 tackles, 3 I50s.
Round 6 - 34 touches, 3 tackles, 5 I50s.
Round 7 - 23 touches, 4 tackles, 3 I50s. (We got flogged by Carlton)
Round 8 - 31 touches, 9 tackles, 5 I50s.
Round 9 - 20 touches, 6 tackles, 5 I50s.
Round 10 - 38 touches, 5 goals, 3 tackles, 7 I50s.

Only Average were Round 7 & 9. In recent weeks he has defiantly raised the bar.
Please tell us how 'he had a rubbish start to the year'...
Flog

Good to see someone going against the establishment. Great work :thumbsu:

Glad somebody liked my list.

I really love what Swallow has been doing the last few weeks so he could slot in 9th / 10th on my list no problems possibly having a better week than Watson so he deserves that spot.

If you can't see the impact that players like Dal Santo and Ray have on the game with the way the read the play and use the football you don't watch Saints games.

Looks like Bong rips got a red card for something so I don't think he'll be responding to this anyway :p

think again

i saw the impact they had on the grand final

zero

faltered under the pressure

Goddard, Hodge, Chapman, Ablett are the only certainties for the top 10 imo.

Surely Pav and Sandi are certainties too? Everyone else seems to think they are anyway.

Pav's had a quiet couple of weeks (though still kicked 3 goals in a 'quiet' game against Adelaide) but he's been in brilliant form this season.

And Sandi has just been completely and utterly dominant all year.

1/2. Goddard - Can play anywhere nearly as well as anyone in the competition can play in that respective position.
1/2. Hodge - Enough said.
3. Pavlich - Same as Goddard
4. Ablett - Match winner when allowed, impossible to tackle, great vision, obvious choice
5. J Riewoldt - Starting to look like he's putting some Nick-esque games on the board. Good to see the kid stepping up when his team needs him
6. Bartel - I think underrated (and I know how highly he is rated...), can't speak highly enough of him
7. Hayes - Doesn't have the skills or pace, but few can turn a match on its head like he consistently does
8. Sandilands - Best ruckman of all time.
9. Judd - His poor foot skills show how good he really has to be in every other aspect to make it to number 9
10. Montagna/ Selwood/ Barlow/ Gibbs

Not much love for Lake?

Goddard, Hodge, Chapman, Ablett are the only certainties for the top 10 imo.

You know the phrase good small man is better than a good big man...... ohh wait

I would have put him borderline top 10 but people sure do love their midfielders

For what its worth i think Goddard is now the best player in the comp

Ablett has the runs on the boards over a longer period, but damn me if Goddard hasent gone up a couple pegs, he has been amazing this year.

Goddard
Ablett
Hodge
Chapman

Then you can throw a bag over another 10 players

Swan
Pavlich
Lake
Sandilands
Barlow
Montagna
Judd
Cooney
Bartel
Franklin
