Top 10 Rucks in the league

Not at all....Sandilands is a great ruckman but has just played in too many crap matches because he plays for Freo - thus his influence is meaningless a lot of the time. Would love to see him play finals footy, but again he plays for freo....

Well for what it's worth... in 06 when we played in 3 finals he won the award at our B&F for best player of the finals series.

McIntosh has been in the All Australian squad in 07 and 09 but seems a bit underrated on this forum. Jolly and other lesser players are ahead of him on most of these lists but I can't see how anyone could justify it.

Very good player that is still young for a big man and should continue to improve a lot.

The order of Ruckmen at their best IMO.

1. Cox - The best, changed ruck work in the AFL, admit it.
2. Sandilands - Massive and an amazing tap ruckman.
3. Hille - Was bordering elite in '08, Knee sucked.
4. Jolly - AA Last year cannot argue with it either.
5. Ottens - Machine around the ground and kicks goals.
6. HMac - Underrated, Amazing ruckman.
7. Gardiner - We saw it in the big game vs Geelong mid year.
8. Clarke - Amazing year, AA in my mind.
9. Ryder - Anzac medal, carried Essendons ruck division all year practically solo.
10. Brogan - Good ruckman, has a large head.

Why does the Anzac Medal seem to be morphing into some sort of Norm Smith Medal type accolade - and why is it mentioned when evaluating these ruckman.

I'm sure some of these players also got voted best on ground against Collingwood in a Home and Away match ???

I'm going to rank them in order based simply on what their output in the ruck (as in I don't care if they can rest fwd and kick goals) in 2010 alone would be IMO if they played first ruck...

Cox
Sandilands
-
McIntosh
Clark (don't think he will play much ruck, deserves the spot if he was to)
Ottens
Hille
Jolly
-
Ryder
Kruezer
Tippett (same as Clark)
Your ****ing kidding yourself if you think Tippett offers more in the ruck than Brogan.

How many other ruckmen got 5 goal bags last season?

Goldstein's tapwork is amazing.

On a mixture of results so far and pure potential, he'd be in the top 10.

By the end of this season, he'll be comfortably there.
Naitanui, Clark, Ryder and Kreuzer are all easily ahead of Goldstein as young ruckmen. I can't see Goldstein pulling ahead of any of them.

Cox, Jolly, McIntosh, Hille, Ottens, Sandilands aren't going out of the top 10 next year, injury pending. Gardiner, Brogan and others are still ahead of Goldstein.

You're kidding yourself if you think he'll comfortably be in there. He's an outside chance to scrape in at 9th or 10th.

I really could not agree with you more on that, that was perfect... Its very sad to see players with such amazing talent to be unable to acheive that great successful feeling but at the same time their loyalty to their club is a credit to them. Sandilands,Pav,Richo just to name a few should be rewarded for the efforts at the club and be traded and this is where "free agency" comes in to it.

Not worth the argument mate. Everyone knows Goldstein is not a top 10 ruckman in the league. He is just trying to build up his own players and clearly does not know much about everyone one else.

Anyway my top 10 are as follows. They are chosen firstly on rucking ability, however usefulness around the ground I have also considered (Ryder style)
1) Cox
2) Sandilands
3) Jolly
4) Hille (People forget how good he was before he was injured)
5) McIntosh
6) Brogan
7) Ottens
8) Hudson
9) Clarke
10) Gardiner (Flew below the radar imo this past season. Had a lot to do with the Saint success)

From 3 - 6 is really hard to pick an order for.

Who says they want to be traded?

None of those 3 players ever asked to be traded so what makes you think they would just walk out on their clubs if we had free agency?

Games:
Cox 22

Sandilands 646

Supercoach Average:
Cox 111.8
Sandilands 93.3
Hille 87.8
Jolly 80.3
Petrie 95.7

From what i can gather, Sandilands has the most impact around the clearances. He wins the most contested ball, he leads the 1%, has the most clearances and DOMINATES the hitouts.

Cox has the best alround best game. Coming close to Sandilands impact at the clearances but leading the other 2 in outside work by a fair margin. He rebounds from defensive 50 and puts the ball inside 50 more than any other ruckman. He DOMINATES the disposal tally.

Hille has the strongest presence up forward, he has taken the most marks inside 50, is a close 2nd to Sandilands in 1% and contested marks and equal 1st with Cox in tackles. Hille DOMINATES the goal tally adding more than Cox and Sandilands combined.

Someone will ask why i haven't included Jolly or Petire. If you look up Jolly in the stats he just doesn't come close overall and looks a clear 4th. Therefore i haven't bothered to include him in the comparison. Petrie has had a great season. He's taken 150 marks and had 355 disposals. My problem is he's only a seldom ruckman. Its only since McIntosh went down that Petrie has been thrown the task more often. At the moment he's had 196 hitouts which in my opinion should exclude you from being named AA as a ruckman. If this was AA utility on the other hand. He'd be up there.

Shortly i'll post some 2009 stats

Pretty impressive year. Feel free to include your favourites statistics for comparison. It's quite interesting to compare each players best season. Like Sandilands 2009 versus Cox 2008. If anyone can be bothered post their players 'best year' for comparison.

Personally i think Cox 2008 shades Sandilands 2009. They are both a step above any other ruckman's year.

1. Cox - Been number one for years
2. Sandilands - Best tap work
3. McIntosh - Underrated, like having an extra rover
4. Hille - Dominated till injury struck
5. Jolly - Not as good now since joined collingwood
6. M. Clarke - Killed it this year
7. Brogan - yep
8. Ryder - Great year, going places
9. Gardiner - Been valuable to saints
10. Z.Clarke - freakshow

How can Jolly ruck work be not that good since he joined Collingwood. The guy hasnt played a game for Collingwood. At Sydney he was a class ruckman.

Haha, WTF? I can only assume he meant something along the lines of Collingwood not nearly being as dependent on Jolly as Sydney were this year. He probably won't have the same workload as this year, still a class ruckman though.
