What's funny to me is how the experts assessing trade week always say team X had a great one because they brought in established players. Well, yes but did they plug holes in your list and what did you give up?

Essendon won the Stringer trade - that's clear and I don't think there's any arguing about that. But overall let's wait until after draft day before going nuts.

Personally, I think Essendon will look amazing going forward at points next season and Saad, Smith and Stringer make them way more potent than they already are. But they'll also spend large parts of some games with their hands on their hips waiting for Heppell to win the hard ball against about three or four other inside mids - because where is his help coming from

Overall the dogs have lost a mercurial talent but also strengthened draft position and plugged two key holes at structurally important positions while potentially removing a substantial risk to team harmony and culture. I for one can't be too pissed off about that, even if Jake does light it up for years to come.

Bottom line, losing him might be painful but the circumstances make it palatable.

I am actually glad that we got rid of Stringer. He might be a mercurial talent but talent means absolutely nothing when you are not willing to put in the hard yards. On top of that he has many character flaws. I would have sacked him if he was working for me. 17 yo girl friend when you have a partner with two kids, gambling... He was only sorry that he got caught and was put on the trade table. I did not hear a single "i am sorry" from him but his dad was happy to blame our club. Good luck to him.

“People” may have said that, but not me. You need to stop putting words in people’s mouths.

Ok then.

"Now it feels like we haven taken quite a few steps back and we are back with the pack.

We are now relying on two high drafted forwards who are yet to live up to expectations.

Not quite sure how that happened but I hope I’m wrong"

Gambling and sleeping around, both of which are rampant in the football community, are not reasons to sack a player.

It's either much more than that or he was made an example of for a poor 2017 by the club

At no stage did I say after trading Stringer that we will be fine and back up there next season though, which was the first part of your post

Just as an alternative idea, maybe we could agree with Cloke to delist him, pay him out and then pick him up in the rookie draft. That would allow us to keep crameri, while still allowing Cloke to continue his career. With lynch and nmm not really afl ready yet, Cloke would be an obvious LTI replacement for Jong while he recovers from his ACL.

Surely crameri is a much better option than whoever we'd pick up in the second round of the rookie draft if we keep Cloke on the main list.

Great idea. Surely no one else will be keen to nab Cloke. Not so sure about Cram.

Not surprising that only a club with Essendope's culture would take him on snd their supporters still troll us.. that Bomber Dan flog on the main board Schache thread is probably one of their biggest flogs .. he hopes that Dahl and Libba leave him alone unlike Boyd and that Libba was the ringleader snd Stringer was scapegoated for it.

You can't make this stuff up

Some of the backflips on here from yesterday and earlier in the week would make a Russian gymnast proud.

No backflip for me DR, I said we would fold and we have.
The club spouted BS about keeping Stringer and we still hear Grant telling us " we would be comfortable in keeping him" if a suitable trade couldn't be found.
Utter tripe !
The club had to wheel out a brand new toy so they didn't look rediculous.
Schache has some great tools we badly need , but I suspect he is a fair way off having any great impact.

But it's not a " life's disaster " and now look forward to watching our new boy develop.

I'm not too upset at the loss of the 2018 2nd round pick getting traded, end of the day we were in a position that we couldn't back out of and just needed to get other assets to get the schache deal done.

Looking forward there has been some talk about Libba and Dahlhaus possibly being shipped off, if things are as bad as have been mentioned then trading them this year would have been wrong, we would've got unders.

What we have done (if things are bad) is put the acid right on them and the whole playing list.

Libba and Dahlhaus either come back fit and firing and rip 2018 to shreds, or they continue down the same path and give us no choice.

The fact they are RFA gives us the flexibility to want to keep them, why wouldn't we if everything is ok and they are buying in, or we allow them to sign with another club.

If we are happy to let them leave that would mean maybe an extra 2 2nd round picks as compo, maybe 2 end of first round if we are lucky.

The media predictably going into a swoon over Essendon's recruiting prowess. They are ignoring the obvious issues with their recruits, the knee that has to be managed & was not selected for prelim (GWS guy), attitude and off field issues (WB guy) and that Saad is not a star player. The media is also conveniently ignoring that Essendon goes to the draft with only 48, 67 and 85 as a consequence of these trades.

Bombers: 9/10??? More like 5/10.

It's not like we were the only ones who took that stance .. Melbourne and Brisbane did the same thing.. none of those players could go back.

Schache will perform a role from day dot.. he'll average at least a goal a game. Think personally if the harmony and injuries improve we will be up there again

Of course we were never going to keep him, but the club had the continue to lay those seeds of doubt.

Did we fold? No. We got 16 for 25 and 30. We got Schache and that's not 'saving face'.

I'm very optimistic. We've rid ourselves of a cancer and we have depth in the pillars and a bunch of exciting mids.

Doth it not sayeth in the good book, worry not what Essendon doeth, for their trade week celebrations will turn to dust and ashes in finals. Care not for the which direction the media winds blow, for surely this is fleeting and shall soon pass.

Verily I say unto you, focus first on the Western Bulldogs - and all other things will be added unto thee.

I think you make a good point about Essendon's trading: the media are fawning all over Dodoro and Essendon and ignoring that Smith isn't best 22 at GWS; Saad is a nice pickup but will never be close to an A grader; and Stringer, according to the media for the past month, is damaged goods, a huge gamble and only worth pick a pick between 20 and 30 at best. Well Essendon paid twice that value for him and now are geniuses? FMD!

Very hope your right DR.
I pray you can come back to me as the season unfolds to remind me I was unreasonable and had nothing to worry about. ;)

C'mon King you're an adult. Only a child should've swallowed the 'tripe' that he would be welcomed back at the club. It was quite obvious (to me anyways...) that the club was merely doing its best to protect its already vulnerable trade position once the decision to excise Stringer had been made.
