Everything Gordon said about Griffen was just a way of strengthening our bargaining position with other clubs:
- his captain of our club
- much beloved player of the Western Bulldogs
- he is contracted, contracted, contracted.

There is no way they plan on keeping him after what he has done. It's all about maximizing our bargaining power. GWS now know that if they want Griffin they have to pay up big time.

I'd like to hope but I wont believe it until trade period is over.

this better be the case... This had better be the case thats all i can say

Certainly going to find out a lot about Jason McCartney over the next week.

....reckon he had a heart attack when grif dropped his bomb, but i reckon Dalrymple might have just firmed up a touch

the list management / recruiting departments are the only areas of the club i really have faith in at the moment. a swift move with griffen is the best outcome now. gotta get it done.

Seriously don't get the amount of hysteria ATM unless it's to distract everyone from the a-league opener tonight.

1. We have lost a coach that pretty much opinion is divided on him 50/50. A bad loss and the media question his worth quick. It takes him weeks to get them back. So big deal. Coaches move on all the time. A club is always bigger than a few people.

2. Ryan Griffen has been our captain for 19 games. 5 of which were very below standard due to injury. He is 28. He had a worrying back injury. Those with bad backs will know once you hurt your back it's never the same. And at 28 the only way is down.

3. The other players leaving are nothing too. Higgins is a spud which we got decent compo for. Jones is a player once every 6 weeks. Cooney is on the decline.

4. We still have Libba, Macrae, Bontempelli, Hunter, Stringer, Hrovat, Wallis, Roughead, Crameri to build around. We will have some very good picks. Ridiculous amounts of salary cap room, A dead set pearler of a captain in Bob Murphy. A new coach, enthusiastic group.

Bring on 2015.

Your post is the first time in two days I've even felt remotely happy. Thank you. It's a good, level-headed assessment. Perspective is a wonderful thing.

Should offer GWS picks 4+7 this afternoon, if we don't sign the paperwork now we will spend the weekend getting him to stay, and seeing if we can shake one of their stars loose. See if that shakes the right offer out of them. I have no desire to keep Griff but would certainly get GWS rushing to make us the right deal.

Have a recruiting team. The coach doesn't need to get involved - he is simply part of the broader footy department.

Am I right in saying that Chris Grant signs off on all the trades at the end of the day?

Things must be quiet on the trade front if AFL are posting Nathan Jones holiday snaps.

Talk is Cooney could go for a fourth round pick, ffs. We can do better than that.

Atleast we will get something decent for Griffen and hopefully Minson.

Whaaaaaaat? 4th Round is rubbish.

Cooney still has currency and although I don't reckon he's worth a first round pick, he is along way from 4.

Trades:

  • Griffen and Jones out - receive picks 4 and 7. Or Boyd + pick 19.
  • Cooney out to Bombers - swap of their pick 20 for our pick 27.
  • Minson + pick 42 out to Geelong - receive pick 14 and pick 53.
  • Tutt to Carlton for 4th rounder.
Get these done and go to the draft.
