I read some of the article in the HS and Chappy has really left him out to dry. Goddard would be a difficult person to be a teammate of because he is so driven, so demonstrative and focused only on winning. Guys like that are hard to play with, but ultimately make the group better. They are often not liked very much, thoug. It's hard to be a "lad" and a driven winner focused only on winning.

Being driven and competitive is a great attribute , but the thing that would piss off his team mates is his own performance contest by contest . Hugely overrated footballer.
But as pointing , elite !
If he pointed at me I would have to belt him.

2 metre Peter or Nakia Cockatoo.

Without meaning to go over old ground and arguments, it is interesting to ponder if we had Picks 6 and 7 last year, would we be better placed with Lever and Wright than with Boyd ? And that's not to dismiss Boyd in anyway, just a stray thought that wandered through....

I dont think Wright is ready for AFL just yet, but neither is Boyd. Lever and Wright fill our pressing needs now, whereas Boyd filled a need we thought we had last year, and may still have come deep in September.

Obviously without knowing what Beveridge's influence would be, it was difficult to foretell our needs 12 months ahead.

I would still prefer Boyd. I can't shake the feeling he will become a great.

Fair comment, I like what I've seen too. Particularly late in the year at VFL level.

And my earlier post ignores whether we would have actually received pick 7 (or whatever it was) or not from GWS.... Because there is some debate about this..

I prefer Boyd. Players like him are invaluable. And it would have been Wright and Cockatoo from the sounds of it.

Agree with the assessment of Boyd. There is a bit of revisionist history in my earlier post, as I'm selecting players for what needs we have now, not what we thought we had. But given it's the offseason, it's an interesting discussion.

I prefer Darcy Moore and Joe Daniher to Tom Boyd, both are 200 cm and
a lot more mobile than Boyd saying that however neither of them is even
remotely worth seven years at a lazy mill a year. I like Tom Boyd, but
that contract is poison.

Lever will be good but if Boyd becomes as good as Josh Kennedy or Tom Hawkins, then he would be another game winner on top of Bontempelli, Liberatore & Stringer

We need a gun kpd for sure, but Boyd could kick a winming margin himself
If he gets to the level that our guys expect

Anyone keen on Matty Watson? Thought he might be a good fit and there has been some press on him today...very athletic family, similar type to Talia but is a bit more mobile and has at least twice (possibly 3x :p) the mental capacity and footy IQ. Im sure he could be a very good player as a KPP with a bit of continuity in his footy/

Without a crystal ball, Im going with Boyd simply because he is the 'hens teeth' option. The giant, pack marking option with an accurate leg cannon.

It is poison for 2016 only.

Boyd is a very different type to those two. I had initial concerns about Boyds agility but I think I was focusing on his weaknesses rather than his strengths too much. He is a massive man that can own the goal square in time.

he's been the player that we've lacked in the past, the big dominant KPF that draws multiple players to him. If we can continue our development and continue this rapid, attacking game style - opponents will struggle to cope with our spread of goalkickers and match up accordingly.

Rookie and cut him after a year if he doesnt train his arse off as advertised?

It depends how you view it. I've often wondered if we could have got Boyd for, say, 750K per year - instead of the rumoured 1M per annum.

But so far it's cost us essentially no-one (other than a few draft picks) and all seems well at the Kennel.

If the difference between 750K and 1M gives us the dominant guy we need to finally break the premiership drought, not one person will consider the deal a bad one....

I was surprised when Carlton got rid of Watson. Although I was also surprised they signed Jones to 3 years.
Not sure if he played much in the backline over the last year or so though, but wouldn't be the worst pick up. Good size and a decent kick. Hitting the age where attitude adjustments with maturity do happen. Like stef said though. Short term incentive based.

I think looking back on it it definitely should have been 750 instead of 1mil and even that should have been big for the kid tbh. But agree with your last paragraph wholeheartedly.

Yeah perfect can't really see any reason not to. Even if Roberts and Morris stay injury free he would be a good backup for Hamling against bigger teams.

There are going to be some very sheepish posters in 2-3 years time when looking back on their views on Boyd.
You are wrong Pann, it's not about Tom Boyd for me purely the contract.
2016 Patrick Dangerfield 800k , Tom Boyd 1.6 mill. How many Dogs kicked
more goals last year and how many will kick more next year, he was not
even in front of Redpath in the best 22 for the last part of the year.
