Maybe instead of joining the throng of clubs vying for key forwards, we need to target a full back and shift roughead forward, ala Carlisle.

Interesting option isn't it...

Try to prise out Jaksch from GWS...
Use pick 5 or 6 on a fast skilful mid.

Roberts, Talia and Jaksch to rotate through the key defensive posts, with able assistance from Morris (actually playing on guys remotely his size now).

Redpath at FF, Roughie in the pocket. Jones at CHF, with Crameri, Stringer and Bont as a tall HFF. Hunter and Dahl fill the two small forward roles...

The interesting (and good) thing I'm noticing is that it's taking longer for our new players to make a mark and get into the team, which is a) as it should be and b) shows we have increasing, not decreasing depth.

If we took Cordy, he'd be looking a HBF/BP type position early, but would be behind Murphy, Picken, Wood, JJ, Higgins (if he stays) - so probably not debuting until later in the season, unless we get injuries. Go back a few years and we had a couple of debutants starting round 1, as we had no other better options.

This works in very well with the VFL system we are encouraging/developing and will ony benefit us in the long run.

If Stevens plays out the rest of the year, he will play his 50th game against Giants.
Hoping the plays out the rest of the year, he's a great on-baller and will become a great mature body forward in the future.

He will play the same role for us that Jude Bolton played for the Swans. High half forward with big stints in the middle. He is very very effective in that role.

not if he goes to a Sydney team

spending over 400k on Tom Mitchell is insane for a third year player, that didn't play in his first year
we're probably paying around 400k..just wait and see I guess :drunk:
amazing what you can pay when you get an extra million in the cap.....

Agreed, allows both of them to develop at their primary position and allows them to slot into the afl side when they have ticked all the boxes.

Given that we gave GWS their captain and best player, you'd think a sweetheart deal would be on the cards if Higgins heads off to ply his trade in the land of the empty stadium.

Why are people so insistent on trying to turn Roughie, who hasn't shown much when played forward but has excelled down back, into a KPF?

Possibly simply because players like Roberts and Talia are available in the 2's, Jaksch may be available from GWS, Delaney and Bruce were picked up the Saints last year. KPD's are easier to come by (although the truly good ones are hard to find), while there will be a dozen or so clubs chasing any GWS/GCS young forwards that mentions that they want out...

I still don't like it. It screams to me of a club so desperate for a key forward that we'll do anything to get one. We'd be robbing Peter to pay Paul.

If Roughie could play forward as well as Carlisle's last 2 games then for sure he should play forward (and let Roberts play back). Until recently it didn't look like Carlisle could play very well forward either and everyone thought they were crazy for not sending him back to defence. A lot of the coaching staff seem to think Roughie will end up a gun forward. I suppose the only way to find out is to give him an extended spell forward like they have with Carlisle and be prepared for it to take a while to click. Maybe that is already our plan for next year

No. He has demonstrated ad nauseam that he's a terrible forward. He's going to be a very good FB, just let him play there and don't worry about that position for a long time.

Guys I love all this but we need to keep a bit of perspective. Higgins, as unlikely (IMO) it is that he goes, he won't be offered more than $400k a season and we'd be lucky to get a Band 2 compo pick if he did.

I'm the president of the Patton bandwagon (a bandwagon that many more have jumped on recently - the more the merrier) however we can't do a player/pick trade to GWS for Patton that involved Higgins, they just wouldn't look at it. We need to be more creative than that.

Having said all of that, our forward line has functioned better with a much more confident Stringer in it and Crameri being more of the hit up high HF, the role he should be doing all the time. Midfield dominance has helped our forward line recently but we come up against some pretty handy midfields in the next few weeks so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Yeah if Higgins goes I'm expecting Band 3, or 2 at best. But if he did land a big contract and we somehow got a B1 compo it would be awesome - another 2 early first round picks would set us up very well.

You're right, it would be. But it won't. Hard to expect a big contract for a player playing VFL in a bottom 8 side.

Not disagreeing with you, just explaining the logic.

I actually like the idea of chasing Jaksch, puts pressure on Roughie, Talia and Roberts to perform and step up. I think Jaksch, a speedy skilful midfielder for Pick 5 and then look forward to pushing the top 8 next year... For example Lewis Taylor for Brisbane would be an ideal addition to our midfield....

Talia is an excellent spoiler but his size will limit him to the third forward, Roberts is looking good too but will need to develop further if he is to handle the dominant ones like Carlisle, Cloke etc

Talia is 4cm taller and 3kg more than Moz his size really aint much of an issue. Particularly with more size left to be put on him.

In the game vs Box Hill Hawks he was a head smaller than his opponents and whilst he did well, it may be an issue if he comes up against one of the marking talls, say at GC or GWS.

Even Roberts is on the short side to match up on a tall power forward. He's 196. He'll be coming up against 200cm forwards.

Inclined to agree with GB - Morris has given away 4 or 5cm to many a tall forward and completely blanketed them. Talia and Roberts will be fine. Roughie's future lies in defense, though, as far as I'm concerned.

Who gives the slightest shit about height?

Scarlett always gave away height to his opponents and he consistently won. Height is one of the least important attributes to a defender.
Tell that to Morris on the weekend.

Or better still tell that to Picken on the weekend who tried to defend against Carlisle at one point!
