For 2 3rd round picks? Probably a good trade
Our last two 3rd rounders have been Caleb Daniel and Marcus Adams.
There is no way in hell I'd give up one of those for Smith, let alone two. A 3rd round pick is still a really valuable selection. Especially in the hands of our gun recruiters.

*Aplogies for the late reply of the post, just noticed it then.

Adams was a 2nd rd pick. And Daniel wasn't our last. Bailey Williams was....

OMG not a discussion on ruck-men again! that S**T needs it's own thread! can someone create a new thread called "Their ruck stocks are better than our ruck stocks and it's not fair:cry:"

Did I read somewhere that we were interested in Zac Clarke over the off season? Or did I just have a nightmare?

Ruck is our list's most glaring weakness. Totally appropriate discussion here IMO.

As a spectator I'm interested how Rough and BTC go this year.

However I'm certain our list manager is canvassing all options in case our rucks remain ordinary.

I'm finding the discussion interesting.

My mistake. But the year before we took Bailey Williams we did take Caleb Daniel with that third pick. And it's guns like him who are still available that you risk losing if you trade for someone like Smith.

Smith was terrific on Monday - Geelong getting him was a bonus, not a compromise. It was a great trade. Most third rounders don't end up long term players. Trading for a player with that pick who can be a regular best 22 player in a strong side is fantastic list management.

And we weren't scouting Daniel heavily, he was the best of what was left. That he has performed so well is a massive bonus, but the club would be lying if they said they expected it.

If we are gonna trade in a ruck I'd want Gawn or better. None of these Lobbe or Kreuzer spuds. Aside from that I'll back us in to develop a younger guy or one of Roughead/Campbell. Think either of those guys could do an Easton Wood.
Stupid comment. If you want a top ruckman, prepare to part with your first and a player you don't want to lose. Are you prepared to do that?

The whole argument about Smith is based on the fact he cost 2 3rd rounders - it was a steal.

I'd be annoying the shite out of Brodie grundy's agent right now.

Thought the whole reason he went to Collingwood was he only wanted to play for a "big" club? I only know what has been rumoured re Grundy but it was said at the time he basically arsed every interview except Collingwoods to try to slide through to them. Big brew-ha re attempted draft tampering at the time although impossible to prove. Unless something has changed I just can't see us being a fit for what the kid is looking for?

I was keen on smith at the time but there really didn't seem to be many suitors for him at the trade table. I wonder if there was more than just his football ability in question. We really seem to have prioritized hard working competitors at the draft so maybe we thought he wouldn't meet the standards expected.

The slight on him was his competitiveness. But that doesn't seem to be an issue at Geelong.

If Roughy gets an injury free run, I think he can take the next step. His leap and mobility in the centre square will be invaluable. He gets the taps and then becomes an additional midfielder. If we can win the centre clearances and then impose the forward pressure we did on the weekend we will be near on impossible to beat. Roughy can make a big difference in that respect and I can see him becoming one of our most important players. Whilst he was not up against much last week, remember, he did a job on Goldy last year. Lets see how he goes on Hickey this week who clearly had a break out game in round 1. I have confidence that Roughy can do the job

Several mentions above of our recent successes at recruiting good 3rd round players. Keep in mind that we have already traded away our 3rd pick to Carlton for this year's draft so we will need to be active at the trade table to regain the pick (or better) to repeat that success.

It was after quarter time, Mr Invisible when heat came on, he is also as soft a player as you will come across and can't mark the ball

Every trade period we're linked with every out of contract player in the competition over 5 foot 7.
Stef Martin & Lobbe were the only two we seriously sounded out (rumours of Kreuzer failing a medical at WO are still up in the air).

2 knee recos and 10 ops in total over the past couple years.
Gun ruckman, but far too much of a risk to trade a first rounder + player or a couple of second rounders. Melbourne have put a lot of work into him and would want the earth.

I'm not sure there are many rucks available - Zac Clarke might be but he's a WA boy at Freo and can't play with niggles.

Zac Clarke played with the Chargers. He's an eastern suburbs boy.

Sorry I didn't mean that we should/could get specifically Max Gawn. But I think if we are going to trade in a ruckman I'd want a really good one.

I stand corrected, thank you.

The problem with trading in a really good one is they cost a lot and in few cases do they hold their form.
the best ruck trades are guys who seemingly underperform then thrive in a new environment (ie Stef Martin, Mummy, Sauce Jacobs). Identifying these guys is an issue, which is why I noted Zac Clarke because a couple of years ago (2012 or 2013) Sandi spent an extended time out injured and Clarke played quite well. If we get someone who can play for 3-4 years we have the option of seeing how Campbell develops, track Goetz's progress or then identify another trade for a mature bodied ruckman.
Or, if we're on the ball, find a state leaguer like Ben Hudson to come in.

We've got two fourth rounders though (Sydney's and ours) so it should be relatively easy to move up if we think that's the best move.

Making a trade to improve our ruck stocks would involve, you know, trading in a player to improve our ruck stocks.

I don't think Zac Clarke is a better player than Jordan Roughead.

Make of it what you will be Fox Footy believe that opposition recruiters are sniffing around the fringes of our list.

Also hypothetically speaking (not that I want him to leave at all) but what do you think Caleb Daniel's worth is?? I think the SA (in particular Adelaide) might come knocking hard.
