If we do go for Wingard at the rumored amount, throw in Boyd's current contract and Bontempelli's pending future contact, surely that will rule us out of making a play for Kelly next year? Given three players will be taking a large chunk of the salary cap, surely we do not have room for a fourth?

If Tigers can fit Rance,Lynch,Dusty,Reiwoldt,Cotchin and others then we should be ok.

No, it’s an issue. Giants will have to let go of Shiel and probably Lobb just to get under the cap next year.

Richmond are experiencing incredible success right now. Guys like Grigg, Houli, Riewoldt, Rance and Cotchin are signing for less to help the club bring in Lynch. They’ll probably lose some handy depth this year with Miles, Menadue, Stengle, and Lloyd potentially on their way out. Maybe others as well.

We aren’t having success like Richmond. What happened when we won a flag? JJ held out his hand for a massive pay rise.

Don’t believe all that signing for less crap, that’s only less than what they would get somewhere else and in Dusty’s case he would be one of the if not highest paid in the AFL.

Thats right, Tigers and Cats guns are taking pay cuts to fit other players in, who will be taking pay cuts in our team to help? Easy thing to say from the couch but it will need to happen in some degree.

If we are borderline on the cap after signing Wingard then the list management team and anyone signing off on the previous team need a hard look at themselves. I hope our mid-low tier players are getting payed relative to the league and not based within our team

Bont will be and others would have already, most players will earn more leaving.

Why does everybody think this?

He has scored 43,43,53 and 38 goals in his last 6 years and then when moved to the midfield went to kick a goal a game plus average 22 touches a game. 2x All Australian. Wingard is a freak and is EXACTLY want we need.
Hang on..Chad, that you? (username and new hehe)

Agree too btw

Im pretty sure Bulldogs have 1.5mil in cap space
Seems a lot of room now, but pretty much shows we can land one big fish on big money not two. Bontempelli will net a bit more than what he is on now, Wingard rumored to cost around $800k or more, and a few players off contract next year. Unless Boyd's contract is renegotiated, the last of our veterans leave, future salary cap increases or Wingard/Kelly accept less that what is being put out there in rumors. Then we will have little wiggle room for further big named signings. That's why I said if we get Wingard, it will almost rule us out of Kelly next year unless we backload his contract to grow after Boyd's contract expires or some of the above things happen. Bontempelli increase on current deal and Wingard deal alone will push a million dollars.

Though I can see us being ruthless and cutting or letting go other players that will piss many people off here. Most of our better paid players are close to retiring, or underperforming to elite standards expected

Haven’t caps increased 20%? Pretty sure we’ll be okay to lock in the Bont long term and bring in some A grade talent.

It's also why some of the opinions on $/year aren't great points to argue anymore. (That's not aimed at anyone in particular.)

Like it or not, $900k is the new $750.

Good post, totally agree. Getting Wingard doesn't limit us in locking away our younger guys eg richards, naughton, bont - but almost certainly limits our ability to chase a really big fish in the short to medium term. Now that it appears that we can at least be in the conversation to attract a grade talent, and assuming that all players are about equally gettable for the right price, who do we prefer from a list fit perspective - Wingard for (ballpark figures here) pick 7 and 900k or Kelly for pick 7, next year's first and 1.2mil?

Toyds contract was massively front ended

Can’t see Smith lasting to 7 unless Rozee jumps. And even then it’ll probably be a King that slides.

I can see a trend of the big KPP starting to slide, unless outstanding Athletes - much like ruckmen have been in recent years - just due to the long time before they start to deliver...
