In our players defence, bit of a difference in the quality of the opposition our players faced compared to the game tonight.

Still though, would be nice to look at a development tall instead of taking another depth mid who is about 12 injuries away from starting (and thats if we don't spin the magnets either).

Agree. On a side note, St. Kilda reminded me of us tonight with a failure to bring it to ground inside 50 or just bombing it.

In fairness all 18 clubs passed on Jack Hayes for years. I’m still dirty we never picked up Pods when he was playing for our Werribee affiliate.

Also I sound like a broken record but people saying we let Lipinski leave but gave list spots to McComb, Rourke, McNeil etc... are completely off the mark. Lipinski wanted good coin ($450k-$500k) and a permanent starting midfield spot. He was never going to get that for us, the money or his preferred position. Simply put he didn’t show the ability to play any of the other roles we tried for him and was pretty bad in them. When the heat was well and truly on he didn’t fire. I hope he has a good career at Collingwood but have some perspective.

Not all 18 clubs required ruckman and most who did, picked up one with AFL experience. Dogs have the worse ruck depth in the AFL. To not look at Hayes is negligent and incompetent at the highest order.

Not sure the coin was quite that high, the bigger issue was he was always the first dropped, while others were given a considerable run of consecutive games and are still VFL players at best. Even when Treloar and Dunks was out he was not given a decent go. Bevo loves his VFL guys and will stick by them and give them plenty of extended run of games. This is the reason our bottom 4 is so much weaker than Dees.

100% agree Melbourne’s 16-22 perform better than ours, but it isn’t a talent thing it is the system. Melbourne can plug and play anybody from the VFL, ask them to do a role and they mostly won’t miss a beat. Lipinski didn’t show the willingness or ability to do that long term. He wanted full time midfield minutes and that is that. Fair play to him.

I’ve always said I would have loved for him to develop into a medium sized half forward flanker, with his finishing and skills he would have killed for us. I hate him the bloke but why couldn’t he have been our Bailey Fritsch? Same height, weight, speed etc...

Lippa never played as aggressively as Fritsch.

Pods could have been the difference in the ‘09 prelim. We were screaming for a tall target and just kept bombing.

Does anybody have an idea on the Footscray vs Casey practice match? Really keen to hear how Marra, West and Wallis went along with McNeil and Jones. The club is shocking with this information.

Someone posted a score in the vfl thread but no other details
Apparently we won comfortably.
And someone posted that West and JUH were the two best on ground.

That's great to hear if true. I know we won easily but I can never get the stats of the players. It's a pain in the arse. I know Marra had covid and when I got it, it took a couple of weeks till I felt like I was moving alright again. I was feeling puffed mowing the lawn so wasn't sure if it knocked him around. West needs a run this year in the HFF position.

But a lot quicker

Unlike other positions - we do have depth here. West and García are both potential stars - also have McLean coming back. McComb was brought in as cover and who knows.

Dunkley and Libba are both All Australians so not the same yet but some pretty good replacements. Both of these are important- Dunkley allows us to move Bont forward and Libba is the best first tough player in the league when in form.

What would also happen is Trelor and Smith would play a different role and not hav RTO be parked at HFF.

Our top four be Bont, Macca, Trelor and Smith - a Fab Four.

It is but I was expecting him to extend. He’ll be playing inside mid all year if he’s fit. I guess the only reason he’d leave is for better money…which is obviously a possibility.
I'd expect he will stay, I think people (me included) just wonder what if, if he were to leave.

I can't see any of our uncontacted players bar Dunkley leaving.

Can we fit them all and bring someone in?

We can't keep relying on a 30 year old Keath.

Hayes rocks up to Moorabbin in December. Meanwhile our second ruck is zaine Cordy and Sweet nowhere to be seen.

Flat.

I’ve watched a few matches this weekend and yes thought the same

Saints have attracted heaps of players.. sadly just not the right ones for them lol and probably too many! Higgins, Howard, Hill, Crouch is probably nothing to scoff at.

We did well with Keath and Bruce but we really needed to add another tall this year.

Howard is probably the only one we should have looked at in hindsight

Higgins was very average last night

Howard was one I was keen on us chasing, filled an obvious need at the right age profile....
